TITLE: Common Network Questions and Answers PRODUCT: WordPerfect 5.1 and 6.0 for DOS This document answers some of the most common questions about networks and WordPerfect for DOS. What's in this document? How do you set up files such as .SET files and .ENV files? How does the supplemental dictionary work on a network? Where is it stored? What options does NWPSETUP allow you to update? What are some network printing problems that would involve Novell's CAPTURE? How does the printer "Timeout" command work? Why is printing to a print queue better than CAPTURE? If a user wants to edit WordPerfect options such as paper size in the printer file, what rights do they need to have? If one person edits something, how do other users update their files to make the same changes? How do you set up files such as .SET files and .ENV files? First, make sure that the /PS option in the .ENV file points to a directory where all users have the following rights/permissions. An example of this directory would be w:\apps\wp51\setup. Novell NetWare 2.x All but Parental Novell NetWare 3.x All but Supervisor and Access Control Banyan VINES Modify IBM PC LAN Read, Write, Create, Delete IBM OS/2 LAN Read, Write, Create, Delete Microsoft LAN Manager 2.x Read, Write, Create, Delete 3COM 3+ Share Read, Write, Create 10Net Read, Write, Create LANtastic All but Physical Access to Device AT&T Read, Write, Create, Delete DEC Pathworks (PCSA) Read-Write File Service 3COM 3+ Open Read, Write, Create, Delete The first time you run WordPerfect, use startup option /U={WP so that you will create and edit the Master .SET file. Make all of the default settings in Setup (choose Setup from the File menu), select the printer, and exit WordPerfect. Users will then pick up the settings from the WP{WP}.SET (WP 5.1) or W{WP__.SET (WP 6.0) file for their respective .SET files. If a new network printer is added to the list of printers, the supervisor must go in as user {WP, select the new printer, and then run NWPSETUP.EXE and choose to update network printers. For WordPerfect 5.1, the only startup options that can be in the WP{WP}.ENV file are /NT and /PS. For WordPerfect 6.0, other startup options can be included. The options that are most often used are /D= , and /PF=. The /D option will redirect users' temporary files to the specified directory, while the /PF option will redirect users' temporary print files. How does the supplemental dictionary work on a network? Where is it stored? The supplemental dictionary works the same on a network as it does on a stand-alone installation. It is stored in the directory listed in the Location of Files. We recommend that the .SUP file be stored in the user's personal directory. If this directory is located on a network drive, the user needs to have full rights/permissions to that directory location. To check the location of your supplemental dictionary, 1 Within WordPerfect, press Setup (Shift+F1). 2 Choose Location of Files. If you are using WordPerfect 5.1, the supplemental dictionary location is found under Thesaurus/Spell/Hyphenation. With WordPerfect 6.0, it is found under Writing Tools. What options does NWPSETUP allow you to update? In WordPerfect 5.1, NWPSETUP allows you to update three options: Location of Files, Initial Settings, and Printers. WordPerfect 6.0 has expanded the functionality of NWPSETUP, allowing you to create .SET file groups and to update several settings in display, environment, location of files, and other settings, as well as network and local printers. You also have the ability to disable the Go to DOS/Shell and Password Protection features. What are some network printing problems that would involve Novell's CAPTURE, banners, and form feed? Novell's CAPTURE feature allows users to reroute a print job from the workstation's parallel port to a print queue. It has several parameters, the most common being Banners, Form Feed, Tabs, and Timeouts. To save paper, turn off banners and form feed: NB NFF. To avoid font problems, turn off Tabs: NT. Timeouts should be set to no less than 10: TI=10. If you are printing a large document or graphics, increase the timeout. Better yet, avoid CAPTURE altogether, and define the port as the QUEUENAME. To define the port as a queuename in WordPerfect 5.1, 1 Press Print (Shift+F7), then choose Select. 2 Choose Edit, then Port, and Filename. 3 Type the queuename, then type Y for a network printer. If you are attached to more than one server, type in the servername/queuename. 4 Press N for Suppress Top of Form. To define the port in WordPerfect 6.0, follow the same steps as listed above, except after choosing Edit, select Network Port, then choose the proper server and queue name. Do not choose Suppress Top of Form. How does the printer "Timeout" command work? There are two types of timeouts. One is the TI parameter in Novell's CAPTURE command, which should not be less than 10 (TI=10). The other timeout is used by PostScript printers. It is less common than the TI parameter. Why is printing directly to a print queue better than using CAPTURE? When you print to a queue, the print job is not released to the network until the print file is completely created. If you use a CAPTURE statement, some of the variables are: No Banner, No Form Feed, No Tabs, Timeout =. The main problems occur with tabs and timeouts. With tabs, the proportional fonts can be misaligned, or graphics can print out incorrectly. With the timeout set too low, the print job is released prematurely, which can cause problems with large documents. If timeout is set to "0", the print jobs are not released until you either shell out or exit WordPerfect. If a user wants to edit WordPerfect options such as paper size and printer file, what rights do they need to have to the .PRS file? If one person edits something, how do other users update their files to make the same changes? The user will need to have the rights specified in the above table for the directory where the .PRS file is located, and the file must have Read/Write attributes. The font and form selections are located in the .PRS file. If all users are accessing the same .PRS file, then all users will be affected by any change. If users are not sharing .PRS files (or in other words, if the .PRS file is located in a user's private directory), users who want the same paper size/type will need to edit their .PRS files individually.
