What you should know 1.2.1 Graphic Program User If you want to use a graphic program we recommend to configure HPSCREEN in the following way: BEFORE starting the graphic program from the DOS level call the HPSCREEN menu by the "hot key", configure HPSCREEN, leave the HPSCREEN menu and then start your application program. If you call the HPSCREEN menu DURING a graphic program session, it may occur that your screen will not be restored properly after leaving the HPSCREEN menu. 1.2.2. Windows User (Windows 3.0 must be in real mode!) If you want to use the "hot key" menu during the window session, you have to start HPSCREEN with the following parameter on the commandline: HPSCREEN /WIN ÄÙ Without this parameter you cannot popup HPSCREEN during a window session. If you have installed HPSCREEN with the /WIN parameter you can popup while running a window application but you MAY NOT use the mouse while the "hot key" menu is active! If you do so, first the HPSCREEN menu will be destroyed, then the top of your window screen will also be destroyed. Your mouse pointer will also shown twice. 1.2.3. DOS 4.0 and DOS 5.0 DOS 4.0 and higher stores all keystrokes during a screendump operation. Therefore you can not cancel the screendump by . 1.2.4. 43 Row Mode HPSCREEN does not support the 43 row mode. Do not use the "hot key" menu. 1.2.5 Requirements To use HPSCREEN you need a HP Vectra, IBM PC/XT/AT/PS2 or 100% compatible computers, DOS version 2.0 or later. 1.2.6. Printer Mode Some HP printers understand two types of printer control languages (PCL resp. Alternate Mode). HPSCREEN supports ONLY the PCL mode. OPERATION 3.1 Starting HPSCREEN Start HPSCREEN by typing in at the DOS level: HPSCREEN [configurationfile] [/WIN] ÄÙ The parameters in square brackets [] are optional. Option Explanation configuration- is a file created by the function file "Save Configuration" (refer to 4.19. to 4.21.). The parameters saved in this file are transferred to HPSCREEN. HPSCREEN is now configured as the configuration file. The default filename is HPSCREEN.CFG. HPSCREEN automatically checks the current directory for this file and loads it. /WIN this option is necessary to popup the HPSCREEN menu during a window session. Please refer to 1.2.2. /HOTKEY:35 this option is necessary to use another keystroke combination instead of the default <+>. Please refer to 9. Example 1 HPSCREEN ÄÙ HPSCREEN scans in the current directory for the file HPSCREEN.CFG. If the file exists the saved configuration in HPSCREEN will be tranferred to HPSCREEN. Example 2 HPSCREEN MY-CONF.CFG ÄÙ HPSCREEN loads the configuration of the file MY-CONF.CFG. Screendump To start the screendump press or on IBM PS2 systems. HPSCREEN will become active and makes a short beep to announce that it will start the screendump. HPSCREEN will read the data from the screen, will process it and then send the data to the printer. If you make a full scale screendump of a graphic screen on a LaserJet printer it may take time up to 20 minutes to transfer all the data. Because HPSCREEN has to calculate before printing, it may happen that the data transfer starts after some seconds (1 to 5). Press the key on your computer if you wish to stop your printer before your screen image is completly printed. The Esc key stops the utility from sending screen data to your printer. Printing will stop when the data that has already been sent is finished printing. Submenu Display Mode Most of the display adaptors can identify different display modes, text modes and graphics modes e.g.. If you have a VGA display adaptor, HPSCREEN automatically detects the right display mode for generating the printout. Usually this also works for the other display adaptors. But for technical reasons there are a few cases where HPSCREEN is not able to find the right display mode. In these cases, you can enter the correct mode manually. If your printout is wrong because of the above reason it is necessary to leave your application program, and call the HPSCREEN menu at the DOS level, then change the display mode to the right one, then restart your application program and to start the screendump again. There problems with the popup menu. 5.3. EGA and CGA Most of the display adaptors can identify different display modes, e.g. text modes and graphics modes. If you have a VGA display adaptor HPSCREEN detects automatically the right display mode for generating the printout. Usually this works also for the other display adaptors. For technical reasons there are a few cases where HPSCREEN is not able to identify the correct display mode. In such cases, you can manually enter the correct HPSCREEN mode. 5.4. Hercules The Hercules Graphics Card can handle two display pages (0 and 1). For technical reasons it is not possible to identify which page will be displayed. If you do not get the expected result on your printer, you have to enter which page is active on the HPSCREEN menu. This algorithm is fast and does not slow down the resolution of printer. 7.4. Funny Patterns Some applications mix screen colors to generate more than the true screen colors. HPSCREEN uses the above mentioned algorithm to generate more than the true printer colors which mixes also printer colors to create different color shades. As a result you will get unpredictable patterns (funny patterns). 8. PALETTE The PaintJet is able to print its 330 different colors using the selftest. You start the selftest by starting the printer and at the same time pressing the key (Linefeed). Because the PaintJet XL does not provide this feature, the program PALETTE is provided on the HPSCREEN disk. This utility produces the same output on the PaintJet, PaintJet XL as the selftest mentioned above. !! This utility is written for the PaintJet /XL ONLY! If you use PALETTE with other printers you will get strange output on the printer or your system may hang up. 9.
