The PCP works only if you are directly connected to the printer through a bidirectional Centronics cable. It does not work over a network or if you are sharing your printer with a switch box. The PCP allows you to establish settings for your printer that you cannot access through your software program. For example, you can turn Energy Star on and off, you can establish A4 to be your default paper size, or you can turn Page Protection on and off. Be aware that any settings you CAN make in your software program will override any settings you make using the PCP. Even if you don't make a change in your software program, its default setting will override the PCP. The settings that are most likely to also exist in your software have been noted. Bidirectional Printing The printer control panel takes advantage of the new bidirectional capabilities of your HP DeskJet 1600C printer and your PC. This means that your printer can send information about itself back to the PC using the bidirectional Centronics cable. Most newer PCs support bidirectionality, but may need to have it turned on in their "setup" program. There is no visible difference between uni-and bi-directional Centronics cables. A bidirectional cable may state that it is bidirectional, it may refer to having ALL pins connected, or it may state that it is IEEE 1284 compliant. If you have bidirectional turned on in your PC and still get a message that the PCP cannot connect to your printer, verify that you have a bidirectional cable. The HP Bi- Tronics cable are part numbers: C2950A and C2951A. SCREEN BUTTONS At the bottom of each screen, you will find a series of buttons labeled: * Exit -- Closes the PCP and returns you to DOS. * Save to Printer -- Saves all the setting changes you have made. * Printer Status -- WORKS ONLY WITH A BIDIRECTIONAL CONNECTION. Will display the printer's current status; for example, Ready, Door Open, Paper Problem. * Self Test -- Prints the printer's self test page. * PCL Font -- Prints the PCL Font Page. * Factory Settings -- Returns the printer to its factory settings. * Help -- Displays the help information for the current screen. PCP OPTIONS Here are some of the items you can set using the PCP. TRAY OPTIONS Paper Source Determines the tray from which paper will be selected FIRST. Unless a tray is locked, paper will automatically be selected from the other tray when the default tray is empty. Tray Lockout Allows you to lock out a tray so that paper will only be selected from it if the tray is specifically selected in the software program. Some software programs allow you to do such things as print page 1 from the paper tray and the rest of the document from the lower tray. Use this option when you want to keep letterhead, transparencies, etc. loaded in one tray and don't want them used when the other tray runs out of paper. Paper Size Select the default paper size you plan to use in the printer. This setting is likely to exist in your software. Paper Type Select the default paper type you plan to use in the printer. This setting is likely to exist in your software. PAGE SETUP OPTIONS Orientation Select whether you want the print orientation to be portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal). This setting is likely to exist in your software. Lines/Page Set the vertical spacing for the default paper size in terms of lines per page. Sixty (60) is the common setting for A-size paper. Copies Set the number of copies you want to print. This setting is likely to exist in your software. PRINT QUALITY OPTIONS Print Mode Select PRESENTATION for the best printing quality for graphics. Presentation does not enhance the printing of text. It will, however, slow the printing speed somewhat. Select NORMAL for most of your printing, especially text-only documents. Select ECONOFAST for the fastest printing speed, which also uses less ink. EconoFast is great for fast printing of spreadsheets. Color Mode Select COLOR for color printing. Select PRINT IN GRAYSCALE to print a document in black & white and shades of gray. This setting enhances black & white graphics. It also will print a color document in shades of gray, thus providing you a high-quality master for noncolor photocopying. FONT OPTIONS These options apply only to PCL. A SYMBOL SET is a collection of letters, numbers, and symbols. If you want to print a symbol such as umlaut o (Î), you must first select the symbol set that contains that character. Roman-8 is the default symbol set. A complete listing of all the symbol sets in your printer can be obtained from HP FIRST. In most cases, however, it is better to use the symbol set charts in your software manual. You should also be aware that the same character on your display may not be the one that prints. For example, 'Î' prints the umlaut o, but may display on your screen as a linedraw character. PITCH applies only to fixed-space typefaces and is mostly used for screen printing. Use 10 if your default paper size is Letter or Legal. Use 12 if your default paper size is A4. LANGUAGE OPTIONS Select the DEFAULT printer LANGUAGE the printer expects to receive. PCL is the native language of the printer. POSTSCRIPT is an available option. If another language becomes available, the instructions for that language SIMM will instruct you to select Optional Language. CONTEXT SWITCHING allows the printer to automatically determine which printer language it is receiving. This allows you to send files in a different language without having to change the default. For example, if your default language is PostScript and you send a PCL file to the printer, it will automatically switch to PCL, print your file, then switch back to the default PostScript language. OTHER SETTINGS OPTIONS FAST Centronics is available on most newer computers. If your computer 'hangs' or gives you a 'port not recognized' message, switch to STANDARD. ENERGY STAR reduces the energy consumption of your printer after 60 minutes of idle time. It will take slightly longer to print the first page of your next document if Energy Star is active (the printer must warm up). Select the PRINTER PORT (Centronics) that your printer is connected to. PAGE PROTECT enhances memory use of the printer. It will slow your printing speed somewhat. Set Page Protect on, if you are printing multiple copies of a document and are getting 'not enough memory' errors. You must have at least 8 Mb of printer RAM for Page Protect to work. The total RAM in your printer is printed on the printer self test. Refer to your User's Guide for information on the self test. PRINTER TIMEOUT is most applicable in network or shared printer situations. It determines the amount of time the printer will wait before looking for data from another source. MESSAGES Cannot connect to your DeskJet 1600C printer. Possible reasons: - Printer turned off or not connected - Printer cable not bidirectional (all pins connected) - Bad cable or connection - Printer is shared or on a network - You have bidirectionality turned OFF in your PC setup.
