INSTALLATION PROCEDURE ---------------------- The purpose of this document is to briefly explain the installation of the NetWare 386 LAN drivers that are used with the Standard Microsystems TokenCard PLUS Family LAN adapters. The files in the release diskette are: INSTALL.DOC This file. RELEASE.DOC Version number and specific release information. SMC8100.LAN NetWare 386 3.11 Server driver. 1. Refer to the NetWare 386 Installation manual and follow the instructions to partition the hard disk and to copy the necessary system files to drive C:. 2. Copy TRINIT.EXE from the root directory of this SuperDisk to the driver subdirectory on your hard drive. 3. Copy SMC8100.LAN from the SuperDisk diskette to the NETW_386\311 subdirectory. 4. Follow the "Run SERVER" and the "Load loadable modules" sections of Novell's Installation Manual to Step (3) - Load LAN driver module. load c:\netw_386\311\smc8100 5. Answer the prompts for the hardware attributes of each adapter. Depending on the type of adapter you have, there are up to four adapter specific configuration parameters the driver may ask you to supply: 1) I/O Base Address. 2) Interrupt Request (IRQ) Level. 3) RAM Buffer Base Address. 4) Size of RAM Buffer - Enter 400 5) MCA Bus Slot number (Micro Channel Only). For the TokenCard Elite adapter, only the I/O base address is required. For the TokenCard Elite/A adapter, only the bus slot number is required. If you do not want the prompts to appear, you can include the required configuration parameters in the command line. Refer to the SMC TokenCard User Manual under "NetWare 386 Server Driver Installation." STATUS MESSAGES --------------- 1. "Initializing SMC TokenCard Adapter ......" The message indicates that the SMC TokenCard is in the process of initialization. This may take from one to three seconds. 2. "Inserting SMC TokenCard Adapter into the ring..." The message indicates that the SMC TokenCard is in the process of inserting into the ring. This may take from one to five seconds. 3. "SMC TokenCard Adapter has inserted into the ring." The message indicates that the SMC TokenCard has successfully inserted into the ring. At this time, the yellow LED that is close to the network connection should be lid. 4. "SMC TokenCard Adapter has been removed from the ring." The message indicates that the adapter has received the "Auto Remove" from the Lan Manager and has removed itself from the ring. In order to get back into the ring, the driver SMC8100.LAN needs to be unloaded and reloaded again. ERROR MESSAGES -------------- 1. "Could not find an adapter at I/O base address xx." The driver was unable to find a TokenCard Elite adapter at the specified base I/O address. Run TRSETUP to configure the board. 2. "Could not find an adapter at slot xx." The driver was unable to find a TokenCard Elite/A adapter at the specified slot ID in a Micro Channel system. Run IBM setup program to configure the adapter. 3. Adapter hardware failure detected (self-test)." During self-test the driver detected a problem with the adapter hardware. Run the TRDIAG program to test the adapter. 4. "Adapter hardware failure detected (initialization)." During initialization the driver detected a problem with the adapter hardware. Run the TRDIAG program to test the adapter. 5. "Cannot access adapter RAM properly." This is an internal OS error that occurs when the driver is unable to allocate memory needed for its local data. 6. "Other system RAM already occupies adapter RAM." The driver cannot load because another device is occupying its assigned RAM space. Use the TRSETUP to configure the SMC TokenCard. 7. "Other system ROM already occupies adapter RAM." The driver cannot load because a ROM device (perhaps BIOS) is occupying its assigned RAM space. 8. "Adapter IRQ higher than 7 not valid in 8-bit slot." The adapter IRQ is set above 7. Reset to lower IRQ level. 9. "Adapter unable to insert into network." Adapter cannot enter the Token-Ring network. Test the adapter's network connections using TRDIAG. 10. "Adapter unable to process a multicast address." A node address was given on the command line or the board is configured for a node address that is reserved for multicast address. This can be fixed by zeroing the Least Significant Bit of the Most Significant Byte of the node address. 11. "Microcode not downloaded." Adapter onboard instructions unable to download to computer. Power down the server and run TRINIT.EXE before bringing the server back up again. 12. "Possible cable disconnect detected on LAN adapter." Adapter cannot detect cable connection to the network. Check the integrity of the cable connection to the adapter. 13. "Configuration corrupted; run software setup." One or more of the configuration values for this adapter are incorrect. Rerun TRSETUP to reassign values. WARNING MESSAGES ---------------- 1. Unneeded Memory Address ignored The user specified a memory address parameter when loading the driver that was un-needed. A software specified memory address will be used instead. 2. Unneeded Memory Length ignored The user specified a memory length parameter when loading the driver that was un-needed. A software specified memory length will be used instead. 3. Unneeded Interrupt number ignored The user specified a interrupt number parameter when loading the driver that was un-needed. A software specified interrupt number will be used instead. TokenCard and SuperDisk are trademarks, and SMC and Standard Microsystems are registered trademarks of Standard Microsystems Corporation.
