Windows Remote Access Service (RAS) Installation Procedure ========================================================== Remote Access Service (RAS) can be installed during Custom Setup or after the initial Windows NT Setup is finished. During Express Setup, if there is no network card in the computer, the user is given the option of installing RAS. This section assumes that Windows NT has already been successfully installed on your computer. RAS installation varies slightly depending on the network protocols you have installed. To use TCP/IP or IPX protocols with RAS you must select the protocol before you install RAS, although selecting a protocol that is not installed will cause that protocol to be installed at the conclusion of the RAS Setup. For information about installing either protocol, see the Windows NT Installation Guide. Note: You must be logged on as an Administrator to install and configure RAS. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE I. Installing RAS for Windows NT 4.0 [tm] ----------------------------------------- 1. Double click the "My Computer" Icon 2. Double click the "Control Panel" Icon 3. Double click the "Network" Icon 4. Select the "Service" menu 5. Click the "Add" Button 6. Select "Remote Access Service" 7. Enter the source path, for example: "D:\i386" 8. The rest of steps are similar to the installation procedures for NT 3.51. II. Installing RAS for Windows NT 3.51 [tm] ------------------------------------------- 1. In the "Control Panel" group, choose the Network option. 2. In the "Network Settings" dialog box, click the "Add Software" button. 3. From the "Network Software" drop-down list, select "Remote Access Service" and then click the Continue button. 4. Enter the full path of the Windows NT distribution files. For example: D:\i386. 5. In the Remote Access Setup screen, click the "Add..." button to add a port. 6. An Add Port dialog box will appear showing a drop-down list of all the ports available to Windows NT for RAS. If you have an successfully installed a multiport adapter, ISDN card, X.25 card, or other device, you should see it in this list. Select the port you wish to use for remote access and click the "OK" button. 7. Remote Access Setup will offer to automatically detect the modem connected to the selected port. Click "Cancel" to manually select a modem or click the "OK" button to automatically detect the modem. A dialog box will appear announcing the modem has been detected. Click the "OK" button. Occasionally, when attempting to detect a modem, Remote Access Setup may present a dialog box requiring you to select your modem from a short list of possible modems. This occurs only when Remote Access Setup cannot distinguish between two or more modems. 8. In the Configure Port dialog box, the modem detected will be highlighted. If RAS did not detect your modem, or if you chose to manually select the modem, select the device attached to the port from the list. Only supported modems are listed. If you are adding a port after the initial RAS installation, you can use the Detect button to automatically detect the modem connected to the new port. 9. In the Port Usage box, choose how the port is to be used. Dial Out Only means the computer will be a RAS client only. Receive Calls Only means the computer will be a RAS server only. Dial Out And Receive Calls means the computer can be a client or server, however, one port cannot do both at the same time. 10. To configure information specific to the type of device attached to the port, select the device and click the "Settings" button. The default settings will usually be ideal. Click the "OK" button. 11. In the Remote Access Setup dialog box, configure RAS network-wide settings by clicking the "Network" button. You can also configure or reconfigure the ports as desired by highlighting the desired port and using the buttons along the bottom of the port box. Click the "Continue" button when you have finished setting up the port and network configurations. 12. RAS Server Configuration dialog boxes will appear for the protocols installed on your computer. See the appropriate topics in on-line help regarding configuring LAN protocols for RAS use. Remote Access Setup configures RAS, creates a Remote Access Service program group, and then confirms that installation was successful. 13. Click the "OK" button in the Confirmation dialog box, and click the "OK" button in the Network Settings dialog box. You may be prompted to confirm the network protocol or other settings. 14.
