Introduction ------------------- Welcome to TALK v1.0 5/24/93 for Novell NetWare. TALK was designed to be similar to the UNIX(tm) TALK function. As of version 1.0, TALK will not operate across servers. Revisions are forthcoming. If you like TALK and use it on your network you are encouraged to send a registration fee of $10 per user to: Richard Levenberg 2945 Santos Lane #1721 Walnut Creek, CA 94596-7596 If you include your name and address you will be entitled to the next revision of TALK which will include several enhancements in addition to cross server access. I would like to hear of any problems, comments, questions or bug reports at my internet address: richardl@holonet.net From CompuServe you can mail to >INTERNET:richardl@holonet.net Installation ------------------- Copy TALK.EXE to the SYS:PUBLIC directory. You will probably need supervisor rights to accomplish this. SYS:PUBLIC is recommended since most installations of Netware have drive and search mappings correctly set for the use of TALK. Any directory on the users' search path is satisfactory, including local drives. Usage ------------------- Usage: TALK Where is the login name of the user with whom you wish to initiate a communication session. If the is logged in, he/she will receive a request to initiate a session with the user who requested the communication. The request will be via the Novell broadcast which appears on the 25th line of the display. The user must hit CTRL-ENTER to clear the request, then type in TALK . In this case is the user who requested the communication. Once the connection is established hitting ESC will cancel the connection and exit the program. While waiting for a connection to be established, the initiator of the request can hit ESC to cancel the request. The receiver of the request will not be notified that the request has been cancelled. If the recipient's screen is not in 80x25 mode they may not receive the request until their screen is restored to 80x25 mode. In MS Windows the user will receive the request if they have NWPOPUP.EXE loaded. Epilogue ------------------- In order to provide a measure of security, printing is completely disabled as soon as a connection is established. Printing is enabled once again after the connection is broken. Enhancements MIGHT include cross server access, supervisor options, quick clear of the screen, user id verification, and data encryption. Your comments, suggestions and ideas would be greatly appreciated.
