REQUIREMENTS: 1. Server running NetWare v2.x. 2. NetWare Installation manuals. CREATING A "LAN_DRV_052" DISKETTE Before you can use the instructions under "Supplement for Attaching a 3Com 3Station to a NetWare Network" below, you must prepare a NetWare LAN driver diskette. Complete the following steps. 1) Use the DOS FORMAT command to format a diskette. 2) Use the DOS LABEL command to label the diskette "LAN_DRV_052". 3) Copy all of the files that you have unarchived from the NetWire file (except the 3STAT.DOC and 3C1100.COM files) to the "LAN_DRV_052" diskette. SUPPLEMENT FOR ATTACHING A 3COM 3STATION TO A NETWARE NETWORK These instructions are for use with the NetWare "LAN_DRV_052" diskette, which contains NetWare LAN drivers and special files for the 3Com 3Station (an IBM-compatible diskless workstation). The "Install/Maintaining the Network" (Netware 2.2) or "Installation/Bridges" (Netware 2.15c) manuals that came with NETWARE contain specific instructions regarding software generation. The Novell installation supplements contain instructions for setting and installing network interface boards. If you require assistance with any of the steps given in this supplement, refer to the other manuals mentioned. IMPORTANT: When using Netware 2.X and 3Station workstations a 3Com EtherLink Plus 3C505 (assembly 2012) network interface board is required in the server or router. Do not attempt to substitute any other board or assembly number. You must choose the LAN drivers mentioned in these instructions as "LAN A" when generating the network operating system or router software. The following is a summary of the steps involved in attaching a 3Station to a NetWare network. An explanation of each step follows the summary. 1) Generate the operating system or router software using the new LAN driver. Select the 3Station LAN driver as LAN A. If you have previously configured another board as LAN A, you must reassign it. 2) Install the 3C505 board in the server or router, connect cables, and boot the server or router. 3) Copy the BOOTSTAT.COM file from the "LAN_DRV_052" diskette to SYS:SYSTEM on the server or router. Flag the file Shareable/Read-Write. 4) Create workstation boot diskettes as required. 5) Run the NetWare DOSGEN utility to create Remote Reset boot image files on the file server's hard disk. 6) Run the 3Station SETUP program at each workstation to specify the cable type and set the Remote Reset filename. 7) Attach the 3Station to the network. 8) Remote boot the 3Station. SETTING UP THE SERVER OR ROUTER Whenever you install a LAN driver in a server or router, you must regenerate the operating system or router software with the new driver included in the configuration. You must also install the new network interface board in the server or router. If you are using floppy disks to generate the new operating system or router software, you will have an opportunity to upload the necessary files from the "LAN_DRV_052" diskette while the program is running. Skip to the next section, "Regenerating the Server and Router Software." If you are using the Network Drive or Hard Disk method, you must complete the following steps: 1) Make sure you are in the NETWARE work directory. 2) Insert the "LAN_DRV_052" diskette into drive A. 3) Use the DOS MD command to create a subdirectory that corresponds to the name of the diskette (LAN_DRV_.052). 4) Use the DOS COPY or the NetWare NCOPY command to copy the files from the diskette to the subdirectory. REGENERATING THE SERVER AND ROUTER SOFTWARE Complete the following steps to select the new 3Station LAN driver and regenerate the server operating system or router software. 1) Locate the "NetWare File Server LAN Worksheet" (or similarly titled worksheet) that was filled out during initial installation of your server or router. Update the information on this worksheet, showing the 3Station LAN driver as LAN A and adjusting the assignments of any other drivers as appropriate. 2) Follow the instructions in your NetWare manual to enter the Network Generation program or Router Generation program. Use the appropriate command (INSTALL,NETGEN, ELSGEN, BRGEN, ROUTEGEN, or similar command). 3) When you reach the "Available Options" menu, choose "Select LAN Drivers." The "LAN Driver Options" menu will appear along with a list of any currently selected LAN drivers. If the "Selected LAN Drivers" window is empty, skip to Step 5. 4) Deselect any other drivers currently selected until no drivers are listed for LAN A by choosing "Deselect an Item" in the "LAN Driver Options" menu. The LAN A driver will be highlighted. Press . Repeat this step until no drivers appear for LAN A. 5) Choose "Select Loaded Item." A list of available LAN drivers will appear. The driver for the 3Station is named "3Com 3C505 EtherLink Plus (3Station 2012)." If this driver appears, skip to Step 7. 6) If the 3Station LAN driver does not appear, press and choose "Load and Select Item" in the "LAN Driver Options" menu. If you are using the Network Drive or Hard Disk method and have not copied the 3Station files from the "LAN_DRV_052" diskette, you must exit the program and complete the four steps under "Setting Up the Server or Router" on page 2. If you are using the Standard Floppy Disk method, a prompt similar to the following will appear: Insert disk matching "LAN_DRV_???" in any drive Press ESCAPE to continue. Insert the "LAN_DRV_052" diskette into drive A and press . The program will load the LAN driver. 7) Choose "3Com 3C505 EtherLink Plus (3Station 2012)" as the driver for LAN A. 8) Refer to your "NetWare File Server LAN Worksheet." Choose any drivers that are still valid and were deselected to accommodate the new 3Station LAN driver. 9) Check the Operating System options, resource sets and disk drivers to be sure that the network configuration is still accurate. 10) Follow the instructions in the appropriate manual to generate the operating system or router software and install it on the server or router. INSTALLING THE 3C505 BOARD IN THE SERVER OR ROUTER The "NetWare Installation Supplement for 3Com EtherLink and EtherLink Plus" contains instructions for installing the 3C505 board in the server or router. Refer to the section on making settings on EtherLink Plus 2012 boards. SETTING UP THE 3STATION WORKSTATIONS Because 3Station workstations are diskless, they must use the NetWare Remote Reset feature to boot to a NetWare network. Setting up the Remote Reset feature for 3Station workstations requires steps common to all Remote Reset workstations, as well as steps that are unique to the 3Station. Follow the steps in this section to set up a 3Station workstation. COPY BOOTSTAT.COM TO THE SERVER OR ROUTER You must copy the BOOTSTAT.COM file from the "LAN_DRV_052" diskette to the SYS:SYSTEM directory and flag it Shareable/Read-Write. Complete the following steps. 1) Boot the file server and log in as SUPERVISOR at a workstation with a floppy disk drive. 2) Insert the "LAN_DRV_052" diskette into drive A. 3) Type NCOPY A:BOOTSTAT.COM SYS:SYSTEM The BOOTSTAT.COM file will be copied to the SYS:SYSTEM directory. 4) Next, type FLAG SYS:SYSTEM\BOOTSTAT.COM SRW The BOOTSTAT.COM file will be flagged Shareable/Read-Write. When the 3Station workstation is turned on, it sends a signal to the network interface board (3C505 board). The board then sends a copy of BOOTSTAT.COM to the 3Station so that the 3Station can request the boot files it needs from the network. CREATING WORKSTATION BOOT DISKETTES 1. Format a bootable diskette. 2. Copy the following files onto the newly formated diskette: 3C1100.COM LSL.COM IPXODI.COM NETX.COM AUTOEXEC.BAT** CONFIG.SYS** ** These files are optional (see the EXAMPLES section for examples) It is possible that all 3Station workstations will use the same boot files. If that is the case, prepare only one boot diskette. PLACING REMOTE RESET BOOT FILES ON THE FILE SERVER After you have created the boot diskettes, you must copy a boot image file to the network using DOSGEN. The boot image file contains exactly the same file information as the boot diskette created in the previous section. You must decide on a name for the boot image file before you run DOSGEN. The default filename used by DOSGEN cannot be recognized by the 3Station. The 3Station filename, such as "3STATION," can contain up to eight alpha-numeric characters. Extensions such as "SYS" cannot be used. Follow the instructions below to run DOSGEN. More detailed instructions are contained in the "NetWare Getting Started: Supervisor's Guide" (Netware 2.15c or " 1) Boot the file server and log in as SUPERVISOR at a workstation that has a floppy disk drive. 2) Insert the boot diskette into drive A. 3) Map drive F to SYS:SYSTEM and drive G to SYS:LOGIN. 4) Change to the SYS:LOGIN directory by typing G: 5) Create and name the boot image file by typing F:DOSGEN A: "boot_image_filename" 6) Flag the boot image file Shareable/Read-Write by typing FLAG "boot_image_filename" SRW Repeat the steps for each boot diskette required. NOTE: The BOOTCONF.SYS file, normally required with customized Remote Reset files, is not required with the 3Station. If you want to use the BOOTCONF.SYS file, refer to the instructions contained in Chapter 9 of "NetWare Getting Started: Supervisor's Guide." RUN THE 3STATION SETUP PROGRAM Before you connect the 3Station to the network, you must bring it up as a standalone station. This will cause the "3Station Setup & Diagnostic Program" menu to appear. Follow the steps below to select the cable type and set the "Start Volume Name." 1) Choose Item 1, "Set Up System Configuration." The "Setup Menu" will appear. 2) Check Item 3 to ensure that the proper type of cabling is specified. The cabling type can be changed by choosing Item 3 and following the prompts on the screen. 3) Choose Item 4, "Set Start Volume Name." The Start Volume Name is the name of the boot image file created with DOSGEN in the SYS:LOGIN directory. Type in the name exactly as you did when running DOSGEN. Be sure to match the filename selected in DOSGEN with the 3Station you are working on. 4) Choose Item 7, "Return to Main Menu." CONNECT THE WORKSTATION AND REBOOT Connect the 3Station workstations and the 3C505 board according to the instructions given in the "NetWare Installation Supplement for 3Com EtherLink and EtherLink Plus" and the installation instructions that came with the 3Station. You can choose Item 3, "Exit and Reboot system," or you can turn the 3Station workstations off, then on again to reboot. They should boot up as workstations on your NetWare network.
