NOVELL TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: DCB Disk Driver for NetWare 386 DOCUMENT ID: TID000019 DOCUMENT REVISION: A DATE: 01JUL93 ALERT STATUS: Yellow INFORMATION TYPE: Symptom Solution README FOR: 386DCB.EXE NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: NetWare Pre 3.11 and 2.2 ABSTRACT: This file contains the DCB.DSK file. This file has a DOC file that gives information concerning the use of the new DCB.DSK disk driver with drives set up as Generic SCSI. This is a completely rewritten driver, not a patched version of the earlier driver. _________________________________________________________________ DISCLAIMER THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. NOVELL MAKES EVERY EFFORT WITHIN ITS MEANS TO VERIFY THIS INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS DOCUMENT IS FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. This is not a patched version of the old driver, this is a completely re-written driver. ***PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION BEFORE USING THIS NEW DCB.DSK DISK DRIVER!*** When a NetWare 386 partition is created with a drive type defined as Generic SCSI under the older DCB.DSK disk driver (date 08/03/89 - file size 16034) and you upgrade to the new DCB.DSK disk driver (date 02/06/90 - file size 17331) you will not be able to mount the volume(s) on that partition. When attempting to mount the volume(s) you will receive the error: "There are no accessible disk drives with NetWare partitions...". When you load the install NLM, and go into "Disk Options", "Partition Tables", you will receive the following error: "NetWare 386 partition relative sector 32 and size XXXXX do not match the ending cylinder XXX, head XX, sector XX". You will need to select "Create NetWare Partition" and create a new partition using the new DCB.DSK driver mentioned above. ***PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A CURRENT BACKUP OF ALL DATA CONTAINED ON THE DRIVE(S) BEFORE CREATING THE NEW PARTITION, AS CREATING A NEW PARTITION WILL DESTROY ALL EXISTING DATA, BINDERIES AND TRUSTEE ASSINGMENTS INCLUDED!*** After creating the new partition and volume(s), you can log in to the server and restore all backed up data. These changes made to the heads, sectors and cylinders (partion table information) were made to adhere as closely as possible to the industry standard partition table information that applies to devices that cannot report heads, sectors and cylinders. We re-emphasize, this applies to GENERIC SCSI ONLY. May we also re-emphasize that Novell has never claimed that the Generic SCSI option would successfully interface with all SCSI type hard drives, nor do we support it that way. The best option for interfacing larger drives is to purchase a drive from a drive manufacture that has a NetWare Ready stamp (indicating the heads, sectors and cylinders) on the drive when shipped from the manufacture and selecting the NetWare ready option in Disk Set. This option applies to NetWare 386 only! ÿ
