Edition 1, Rev. 5T [10/19/95] ====================================== Installing the LANtastic 32-bit Client Congratulations on your decision to add the LANtastic(R) 32-bit Client for Windows(R) 95 to your LANtastic network. This program will give you all the functionality of a LANtastic workstation, while taking advantage of the true multi-tasking capabilities of the Windows 95 32-bit operating system. Before installing the program, please take a few minutes to read the next few sections and perform any necessary preparatory tasks. Doing so will help make sure the LANtastic 32-bit Client will install and operate properly on your computer. After you've prepared your computer, go on to the section called "Getting started with the software installation." ================================ Configuring your network adapter Below are guidelines for installing and configuring your network adapter to operate with the LANtastic 32-bit Client and Windows 95. - Do not install the LANtastic 32-bit Client on a computer that's using multiple adapters. - If there's an Artisoft NodeRunner adapter installed in this computer, and it isn't already configured to run in "NE1000-compatible" mode, it must be reconfigured to run in that mode to ensure compatibility with Windows 95. See the section called "Configuring Your NodeRunner adapter to operate in NE1000-compatible mode," which also includes instructions on changing the IRQ to the required setting of between 2 and 7. This section is located near the end of this file. - If there's an Artisoft NodeRunner adapter installed in this computer, you know it's configured to run in "NE1000-compatible" mode, and you know its IRQ and I/O address settings, go on to the section called "If you're already running LANtastic." Note that adapters using NE1000-mode must use an IRQ between 2 and 7. - If there's an Artisoft AE-x adapter installed in this computer, you know it's configured to run in "Novell" mode, and you know its IRQ and I/O address settings, go on to the section called "If you're already running LANtastic." - If there's an Eagle NE2000 Plus or a Novell NE2000 adapter installed in this computer, you know it's configured to run in "NE2000-Compatible" mode, and you know its IRQ and I/O address settings, go on to the section called "If you're already running LANtastic." - If there's a NodeRunner or AE-x adapter installed in this computer, but you don't know the adapter's configuration, or you know its settings must be reconfigured, see the section called "Configuring your NodeRunner adapter to operate in NE1000-compatible mode" or "Configuring your AE-x adapter to operate in Novell mode." These sections are located near the end of this file. - If the adapter installed in this computer is a brand other than NodeRunner, AE-x, Eagle NE2000 Plus or Novell NE2000, refer to your adapter documentation for instructions on configuring it. - If there's no network adapter installed in this computer, install one now according to the adapter's documentation. - If you're installing a NodeRunner adapter, configure it for "NE1000-compatible" mode. Or if you're installing an Artisoft AE-x adapter, configure it for "Novell" mode. Be sure to note the adapter's IRQ and I/O address settings. NodeRunner and AE-x configuration instructions are located near the end of this file. - If you're installing an Eagle NE2000 Plus or Novell NE2000 adapter, configure it for NE2000-compatible operation. Refer to the adapter's documentation for configuration instructions. Be sure to note the adapter's IRQ and I/O address settings. - If you're installing any other non-Artisoft adapter, refer to its documentation for configuration instructions. Be sure to note its IRQ and I/O address settings. =================================== If you're already running LANtastic If LANtastic V5.x or higher is installed on this computer, you must use a text editor such as WordPad to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (and perhaps your CONFIG.SYS file) to keep LANtastic from running. To do so, close the LANtastic Program Group and the WNET program (if it's running), then: NOTE: Make sure you don't change the fonts or formatting of your AUTOEXEC or CONFIG.SYS files. 1. Open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 2. Find the line that runs the LANtastic software. Typically this line will be: CALL STARTNET. 3. Type REM in front of the line. For example: REM CALL STARTNET. 4. Save your changes. 5. Open your CONFIG.SYS file. 6. Find any lines that load NDIS drivers. For example: Device=C:\LANTASTI\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\LANTASTI Device=C:\LANTASTI\AEXNDIS.DOS If you don't find any NDIS commands, go on to step 9. 7. Type REM in front of the NDIS command line(s). For example: REM Device=C:\LANTASTI\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\LANTASTI REM Device=C:\LANTASTI\AEXNDIS.DOS 8. Save your changes. 9. Open your WIN.INI file and delete the line: Load=...\WNET.EXE. 10. Save your changes and exit the text editor. 12. On the Windows 95 desktop, click "Start." Then click "Settings," "Control Panel." 13. Double-click "Network" to open the network property sheets. A window appears showing the installed network components. 14. Select the line that says "Artisoft LANtastic (version 5.x and above)," and click "Remove." 15. Click "OK," then click "Yes" to restart your computer. ============================================== Getting started with the software installation Now that you've completed any necessary preparatory tasks, and downloaded and executed the file called LC95.EXE, perform the following steps: 1. Copy the file called UNPACK.EXE to a temporary location on your hard drive. For example, make a directory or folder called LCLIENT. NOTE: Don't use a long filename for the directory or folder you create to hold the LANtastic 32-bit Client files. Instead, use a DOS-format filename (maximum of eight characters with a three-character extension). 2. In Windows 95, go to the folder you created and double-click on UNPACK.EXE. Or from the DOS prompt, change to the directory you created and type: UNPACK . All of the files needed for the LANtastic 32-bit Client will be placed in the folder or directory you created. Once you've unpacked the files, you can run SETUP.EXE to install the LANtastic 32-bit Client automatically. Or you can manually install the LANtastic 32-bit Client's network components one at a time by using the Windows 95 property sheets. Artisoft recommends that you run the SETUP program. Instructions appear below in the section called "Automatic installation." If instead, you choose to use the property sheets, go to the section called "Manual installation." ====================== Automatic installation NOTE: Before you begin the steps below, make sure that you've unpacked the LANtastic 32-bit Client files according to the instructions in the previous section. 1. Click "Start," then click "Run." Type the path to the SETUP program in the directory or folder where you ran UNPACK in the previous section. Click "OK," and the LANtastic Client for Windows 95 screen appears. 2. Click "Add" to install the LANtastic 32-bit Client. You'll see a status window showing the progress of the installation. 3. If you're prompted to select an adapter driver, make your selections according to the guidelines in the section called "Configuring your network adapter" near the beginning of this file. 4. If you're prompted to insert the Windows 95 CD, put the CD in your CD-ROM drive. Type in the path to the CD-ROM drive (for example, D:\WIN95), then click "OK." Wait as the LANtastic 32-bit Client files are copied to your hard disk. IMPORTANT! Do not click "Cancel" during installation unless you want to abandon the process. 5. Read the screen that appears. It contains important program information. To disable this screen until February 1, 1996, click "Yes." To have the screen appear each time you start your computer, click "No." 6. When the Installation Complete screen appears, click "OK." Then click "Yes" when asked if you want to restart your computer. The LANtastic 32-bit Client will be running after you restart. 7. A window may appear asking for your Microsoft Networking password. If this happens, type in your password and click "OK." 8. Click "Start." Then click "Settings," "Control Panel." 9. Double-click "Network" to open the network property sheets. 10. From the Network window, click the "Identification" tab. Check to make sure that your computer has a unique name on the network. It's a good idea for your computer to have a name that's meaningful. When you've finished checking the computer name, click "OK." 11. A status bar appears as Windows 95 builds a driver information database. At the completion of the process, close the Control Panel window. 12. Go to your Windows 95 desktop and double-click the "LANtasti" shortcut icon that was added during installation. This will activate the LANtastic 32-bit Client. 13. Type your registration information in the window that appears, then click "Continue." NOTE: If you like, click "Browse Network" to see the other computers on your network. If you have any problems, refer to the section called "Troubleshooting" near the end of this file. See also the on-line help within the program. +++ End of automatic installation +++ =========================== Manual installation NOTE: Before you begin the steps below, make sure that you've unpacked the LANtastic 32-bit Client files according to the instructions in the section called "Getting started with the software installation" earlier in this file. Follow the instructions in this section to set up the software for an adapter, a protocol and a client. All three of these pieces are required for the LANtastic 32-bit Client to work on your computer. IMPORTANT! You must follow the instructions in this section in the order they're presented. o Adapter - Configuring Windows 95 to recognize your network adapter NOTE: If a network adapter has already been installed and configured under Windows 95 on this computer, skip the steps in this section and go to the Protocol section that follows. You shouldn't install a second network adapter. 1. Click "Start." Then click "Settings," "Control Panel." 2. Double-click "Network" to open the network property sheets. A window appears showing the installed network components. This field will be empty if you don't have any network components installed at this time. 3. From the Network window, click "Add." A list of component types appears. 4. Select "Adapter" and "Add." A list of manufacturers and network adapters appears. 5. Scroll down the list of manufacturers until you find the one for your network adapter. Select the manufacturer, then select the adapter and click "OK." If you have a NodeRunner adapter, select "Novell/Anthem" then select "NE1000-compatible" and click "OK." If you have an AE-x adapter, select "Artisoft Corporation." Then select "Artisoft AE-2 or AE-3" and click "OK." You'll be returned to the Network window. There you'll see that your adapter has been added to the list of network adapters. (You may see other components added as well -- ignore them now, as they'll be removed in a later step.) 6. Double-click your adapter. A new window appears. 7. Select the "Resources" tab and use the up and down arrows to set the IRQ and I/O address to match the settings for your adapter, then click "OK." Make sure the settings you choose aren't already in use. NOTE: NodeRunner adapters must use IRQ settings 2 through 7. AE-x adapters and all NE2000-compatible adapters can use IRQs 2 through 15. IMPORTANT! Don't try to type in the I/O address. Set it using the up and down arrows. ++ End of adapter section ++ o Protocol - Selecting LANtastic as your network provider 1. From the network window, click "Add." A list of component types appears. 2. Select "Protocol" and click "Add." A list of manufacturers and network protocols appears. 3. Click the "Have Disk" button. 4. Type in the path to the directory or folder on your hard drive where you ran UNPACK (for example: C:\LCLIENT), then click "OK." 5. Select "Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS" and click "OK." You'll be returned to the Network window. There you'll see that "Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS" has been added to the list of network protocols. ++ End of protocol section ++ o Client - Setting up the LANtastic 32-bit Client 1. From the Network window, click "Add." A list of component types appears. 2. Select "Client" and click "Add." A list of manufacturers and network clients appears. 3. Click the "Have Disk" button. A prompt box appears asking for the disk or the path to the LANtastic client files. 4. Type in the path to the directory or folder on your hard drive where you ran UNPACK (for example: C:\LCLIENT), then click "OK." 5. Select "Client for LANtastic Networks" and click "OK." You'll be returned to the Network window. There you'll see that "Client for LANtastic Networks" has been added to the list of installed network components. 6. If you don't have any Microsoft or Novell servers on your network, follow the bulleted steps below to disable the Microsoft and Novell clients that were installed with Windows 95. By doing so, you'll gain better LANtastic network performance. In addition, you'll avoid receiving error messages related to the Microsoft and Novell components. o Click "Client for Microsoft Networks," then click "Remove." o Click "Client for NetWare Networks," then click "Remove." o Click "NetBEUI," then click "Remove." o Click "IPX/SPX-compatible protocol," then click "Remove." 7. From the Network window, click the "Identification" tab. Check to make sure that your computer has a unique name on the network. It's a good idea for your computer to have a name that's meaningful. When you've finished checking the computer name, click "OK." 8. From the Network window, click "OK." Wait as the LANtastic 32-bit Client files are copied to your hard disk. IMPORTANT! Do not click "Cancel" during installation unless you want to abandon the process. If you're asked to provide files with a .VPE extension, type the path to the directory or folder on your hard drive where you ran UNPACK (for example: C:\LCLIENT) and click "OK." If you're asked for files other than ones with a .VPE extension, put the Windows 95 CD into your CD-ROM drive, type in the path (for example: D:\WIN95) and click "OK." NOTE: If your Windows 95 files are stored in a location other than on the CD, click "OK." Then enter the full path to the Windows 95 files when prompted and click "OK." 9. When all of the files have been copied, you'll be prompted to restart your computer. Click "Yes." 10. Read the screen that appears, as it contains important program information. To disable this screen until February 1, 1996, click "Yes." To have the screen appear each time you start your computer, click "No." The LANtastic 32-bit Client is now installed. When your computer restarts, the LANtastic 32-bit Client will be running. 11. Go to your Windows 95 desktop and double-click on the "LANtasti" shortcut icon that was added during installation. This will activate the LANtastic 32-bit Client. You may need to move or close the Control Panel window in order to find the LANtasti shortcut icon. 13. Type your registration information in the window that appears, then click "Continue." NOTE: If you like, click "Browse Network" to see the other computers on your network. If you have any problems, refer to the section called "Troubleshooting" near the end of this file. Also see the on-line help within the program. +++ End of manual installation section +++ Installation complete! =============== Troubleshooting - You receive the error message: "Could not open file C:\[xxxxxxxxxx]\ACLI for reading." Rename the directory or folder where you copied the LANtastic 32-bit Client files. Use a DOS-format filename (maximum of eight characters with a three- character extension). - The shortcut icon doesn't work. The LANtastic shortcut icon points to your C: drive by default. If you installed the LANtastic 32-bit Client to a drive other than C: (for example D:), you'll need to edit the LANtastic shortcut icon so that it has the correct path to the LANtastic 32-bit Client files. To do so: 1. Put the mouse cursor on the LANtastic icon and click the right mouse button. A small menu appears. 2. Click "Properties" at the bottom of the menu. A window opens, displaying a "General" tab and a "Shortcut" tab. 3. Click on the "Shortcut" tab. 4. In the "Target" and "Start in" fields, replace C: with the drive letter where your LANtastic 32-bit Client files are stored. NOTE: If you accidentally delete the entire line in the "Target" field, here is the correct text to type in: X:\LANTASTI\WIN95\LCNET32.EXE where X: is the drive where the LANtastic 32-bit Client files are stored. 5. Click "OK." - You click the "Network Neighborhood" plus sign, but no treeview appears. If you have a dial-up adapter installed, you must remove the Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS and NetBEUI bindings from that adapter. To do so: 1. Click "Start," "Settings," "Control Panel." 2. Double-click "Network." 3. Look in the list of installed components. You'll see two entries for Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS and two entries for NetBEUI. 4. Click "Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS --> Dial-Up adapter," then click "Remove." 5. Click "NetBEUI --> Dial Up adapter," then click "Remove." 6. Click "OK," then click "Yes" to restart your computer. - You can't view or connect to other LANtastic servers. Follow the steps below: 1. Go to the Network window and select your adapter. 2. Click "Properties." 3. Click the "Resources" tab and verify that the IRQ and I/O address are set correctly. If they aren't, change them as necessary. Click "OK." 4. Click "Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS," "Properties." Then click the "Advanced" tab. 5. Verify that the selected frame type is Ethernet II. If it isn't, change it accordingly and click "OK." 6. Click "OK" to exit the "Properties" and "Network" windows. 7. Click "Yes" to restart your computer. - You receive the error message: "You cannot disconnect from XXX because there are open files on this device." Exit any application that's using the server's resource, (such as Windows Explorer) before attempting to disconnect from device XXX. - You receive the error message: "An attempt was made to remember a device that had previously been remembered." Uncheck "Remember Next Connection Made," then click "OK" to continue. - You receive the error message: "Error enumerating printers!" Remove, then re-add, the Client for Microsoft Networks. NOTE: If you don't have any Microsoft servers on your network, there's no need to re-add the Microsoft Client. - You receive the error message: "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as this computer can accept." You'll receive this message if you have the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks loaded and you use the "View Print Jobs" option. Instead of using View Print Jobs, follow the steps below: 1. Double-click Network Neighborhood. 2. Double-click the computer for which you want to check print jobs. 3. Double-click the printer icon. The print job status window appears. Or if you prefer, create a shortcut to the desired printer: 1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above. 2. Click the printer icon and drag it to your Windows 95 desktop. 3. Double-click the printer icon on your desktop to open the print job status window. - You receive the error message: "The printer this shortcut refers to does not exist on this computer. Delete this shortcut and create a new one from your printer folder." You may see this message if you've dragged and dropped multiple print jobs to a printer shortcut icon on your Windows 95 desktop. Ignore the message. Your jobs will print as requested. - You want to use Windows 95 Advanced Power Management (APM) with the LANtastic 32-bit Client. When APM is invoked on a computer running the LANtastic 32-bit Client, all connections to LANtastic servers are lost, and it becomes impossible to make any new connections. To avoid this problem, disable APM on the LANtastic 32-bit Client computer. - The Windows 95 BOOTLOG contains a "Load Failed" error in reference to a LANtastic 32-bit Client .VPE file. Ignore this error. The file was actually loaded properly. - You want to restore the LANtastic 32-bit Client default settings. To restore the LANtastic 32-bit Client's colors, button text, etc., to the defaults, delete the LCNET32.LCF file from the Windows directory. ================= Technical support This section outlines the Artisoft technical support options available for the LANtastic 32-bit Client. o Telephone support Priority 900 Support (U.S. only) (900) 555-TECH (8324) There's no waiting on this line, and you work with expert Artisoft technicians. To reduce network traffic, you may want to make sure that the LANtastic 32-bit Client is bound only to the Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS protocol and vice versa. To do so: 1. Click "Start." Then click "Settings," "Control Panel." 2. Double-click "Network" to open the property sheets. 3. Highlight each protocol in turn and click "Properties." 4. Make sure that a check mark appears only next to the network client for which the protocol was installed, then click "OK." If this isn't the case, remove any unnecessary check marks by clicking the checkmark, then click "OK." 5. Restart your computer if you made any changes. ======================================================================== Configuring your NodeRunner adapter to operate in NE1000-compatible mode In order to run the LANtastic 32-bit Client on Windows 95, your NodeRunner adapter must be in "NE1000-compatible" mode. You can easily set it to this mode using the NRSETUP program. You'll find NRSETUP.EXE in one of three places: - On the disk with your adapter software - On disk 1 of your LANtastic installation disks - In your \LANTASTI subdirectory if you've previously installed LANtastic 6.1 or below If you don't have a copy of NRSETUP.EXE, you can download it from the Artisoft electronic bulletin board. The BBS number is (520) 884-8648 (U.S. and Canada only). Or, you can get NRSETUP.EXE from Artisoft's FTP server at: FTP.ARTISOFT.COM. Perform the steps below to configure your NodeRunner adapter to NE1000-compatible mode: 1. From the DOS prompt, type: NRSETUP . 2. If any network software is running, you'll see the message, "Adapter may be in use!" Press Enter to proceed or Esc to abort. The Main Options screen appears. 3. Use the cursor keys to select "Manual NodeRunner Configuration," then press Enter. Two windows appear. The top one shows information about your NodeRunner adapter. The bottom one shows a list of configuration options. 4. Use the cursor keys to select "Mode" in the bottom window, then press Enter. A third window opens showing all available modes of operation. 5. Use the cursor keys to select "NE1000," then press Enter. 6. Set the IRQ to a value between 2 and 7. Make sure the IRQ you choose isn't already in use. Your adapter is now configured correctly to operate with Windows 95. 7. Press Esc twice to exit NRSETUP. ======================================================= Configuring your AE-x adapter to operate in Novell mode AE-x adapters aren't software configurable. Therefore, they must be configured by moving the black plastic jumpers located on the adapter. If you don't have much hand-room inside your computer, it'll be easier to remove the card entirely before attempting to set the jumpers. Perform the following steps to put your AE-x adapter in Novell mode: 1. Position the adapter chip-side up. You'll see several rows of brass pins sticking up. Some have black plastic squares on them; these are the jumpers. 2. Find the set of pins closest to the lower left-hand corner of the adapter. Each set of pins has a label. The labels are (from left to right): "N A 8 16 A B C D." 3. If there's a jumper on the "A" pins, slide it up and off of the pins. Then reposition the jumper on the "N" pins. This sets the adapter to Novell mode. 4. While you're looking at the adapter, make a note of the IRQ (interrupt request) and the I/O base address settings. You'll need this information during the software installation. The I/O base address can be determined by looking at the remaining jumpers on same set of pins you looked at in the steps above. The jumpers on the pins correspond to I/O addresses, as shown in the table below: Jumper Combinations I/O Base Address AB 300 AC 320 BD 340 CD 360 5. To determine the IRQ setting, look at the right-most set of pins in the same row, at the bottom of the adapter. This set of pins is labeled "IRQ" on the bottom, and "2 3 4 5 6 7 10 15" on the top. There's only one jumper; the number directly above the jumper is the IRQ setting. 6.
