*********************** GATEUNST.TXT ********************** NOTE: The enclosed GATEUNST.BAT batch file is intended for use in either a LANtastic for DOS/Windows 3.1x or a LANtastic for Windows 95 environment. On a Windows 95 machine it is intended to be run either from a DOS window on a system which has either of the Server or Client components of the LANtastic Internet Gateway installed, or by launching the batch file from the 'Start/Run' tabs on the Windows 95 desktop. On a Windows 3.1x machine, it is intended to be run from DOS (not a DOS window.) This batch file will remove the LANtastic Internet Gateway components from the machine on which it is run. It will also attempt to restore a Winsock that had been previously installed prior to installing the Gateway. Be aware that as the Gateway does not support Win32S in a Windows 3.1x environment, the GATEUNST.BAT program will not attempt to restore any WSOCK32 files in the Windows System directory. It will be necessary to reinstall Win32S to reenable 32-bit Winsock support after running this program. *********************************************************** Overview: This program works by removing the LANtastic programs and changing the key pointers in Windows 95 to reflect the changes. Upon rebooting the computer, the gateway code will no longer be present on the machine and references to the programs will be removed from the Control Panel and Startup folder. The LANtastic menu program will still show an option to Assign Internet Connections, but the button will no longer function. If Gateway functionality is later desired it will be necessary to rerun the LANtastic 7.0 Setup program either from CD-ROM, diskettes, or Install resource. In a Windows 3.1x environment, this program works by deleting the Gateway files from the Windows directory. It will attempt to reenable a previously installed 16-bit Winsock by renaming WINSOCK.001 to WINSOCK.DLL. Issues: This procedure is very straightforward on a Gateway server. This machine is already using the WINSOCK.DLL and WSOCK32.DLL files that are provided by Windows 95 so there is no need to replace them. It is only necessary for the batch file to update the pointers and remove the gateway programs. Other issues need to be considered on a Windows 95 client machine. This batch file expects the original WINSOCK.DLL to be present in the Windows directory with the name WINSOCK.000. The original WINSOCK.DLL program is saved with this name during the Winsock Gateway installation. The Windows\System file, WSOCK32.DLL, is likewise renamed to WSOCK32.000. If these files are not present with the .000 extensions when the GATEUNST batch file is run, users will be warned that the original files need to be present before Winsock operations can be performed. A Windows 3.1x machine may not have a previous version of WINSOCK.DLL available as one is not provided with Windows 3.1x by default. The original Gateway installation program searched for WINSOCK.DLL in the Windows directory and if one was found, renamed it to WINSOCK.001. GATEUNST.BAT will try to rename WINSOCK.001 back to WINSOCK.DLL. If this fails, the user is presented with the warning that one must be provided for Winsock applications to work. The original Windows 95 distribution versions of these programs are: WINSOCK.DLL 42080 bytes dated 7/11/95 at 9:50am WSOCK32.DLL 66560 bytes dated 7/11/95 at 9:50am Depending upon the user's individual configuration, a different WINSOCK and WSOCK32 may be necessary. Due to the huge number of possible permutations, this program does not check for this possibility and only reactivates the original Windows 95 Winsock files that were disabled when the gateway was installed. If a non-default Windows 95 Winsock is desired; it will be necessary to either install the non-default Winsock from the application or put the files in place manually. Artisoft assumes no responsibility for installing and configuring third-party Winsock applications. To Use: *** IMPORTANT NOTE *** It is imperative when running from a DOS window that the window's Properties be configured for 'Suggest DOS mode as necessary.' If this is not performed, the update will not take place and the gateway will not be properly deactivated. To check this potentiality, right-click on the MS-DOS prompt icon. Select 'Properties.' Click on the 'Program' Tab. Click on the 'Advanced' button. Ensure that there is a check-mark in the 'Suggest DOS as necessary' field. There should be no other check-marks in the other fields. Disregard this note if running the program from the Start/Run option on the Desktop. 1. Copy the GATEUNST.BAT file to the Windows directory of a machine running either the Gateway Server or Client programs. 2. Either open a DOS window from Windows 95, type GATEUNST and follow any prompts. Or, from the Desktop, Select 'Start,' 'Run,' enter GATEUNST, and follow any prompts. 3. After the system has made its changes and rebooted itself, the GATEUNST.BAT program may be removed. If you have any difficulties, please contact Artisoft Technical Support at (520) 670-7000.
