Windows NT 3.5 WINDOWS* NT 3.5 INSTALLATION NOTES: FOR THE INTEL EtherExpress(tm) 16 FAMILY OF NETWORK ADAPTERS ------------------------------------------------------------ This document applies to the EtherExpress(tm) 16, 16TP, 16C, FLASH, FLASH TP, FLASHC, MCA, and MCA/TP adapters. It contains notes for installing the driver, but does not explain how to configure an EtherExpress adapter. DRIVER LOCATION --------------- Drivers are located in the following directory on the EtherExpress 16 LAN Adapter Driver and Option disk that came with your EtherExpress 16 adapter. \NT35\EE16MINI.SYS \WNT35\OEMSETUP.INF BEFORE YOU START ---------------- You should configure and test the EtherExpress 16 adapter with SOFTSET.EXE before adding the adapter to Network Setup in Windows NT. You must boot the workstation with DOS, and then insert the EtherExpress 16 LAN Adapter Configuration and Driver disk into drive A. At the DOS prompt type: A:SOFTSET 1. Select "Automatic Setup" to let SOFTSET configure the EtherExpress 16 adapter to work in your computer, or select "Manual Setup" if you want to designate which interrupt and I/O address you want the EtherExpress 16 to use. 2. Select "Run Diagnostics" from the main menu to test the configuration you have selected. If the EtherExpress 16 fails diagnostics it may not function correctly under Windows for Workgroups. NOTE: SoftSet is a DOS program and will not run in Windows NT. You must run SoftSet from DOS. You can boot to DOS by inserting a DOS boot disk into your floppy disk drive A when rebooting, then run SoftSet. GENERAL INSTALLATION -------------------- 1. The EtherExpress 16 adapter should be configured and tested prior to setting it up in Windows NT. You can either configure the adapter by using FlashSet if you have a Flash adapter, or by using SoftSet. SoftSet cannot be run under NT, you must boot to DOS. 2. In NT, open Control Panel and click the Network icon. 3. From the Network Settings window, click "Add Adapter". 4. A list of available adapters will be displayed. Choose " Requires disk from manufacturer". and click "Continue". NOTE: An EtherExpress 16 driver is included with Windows NT 3.50. Intel recommends using the newer driver supplied on the EtherExpress 16 driver disk. 5. Insert the EtherExpress 16 LAN Adapter Disk in the drive A: 6. From the Insert Disk window, change the path to "A:\NT35" and click "OK". 7. From the Select OEM Option window, select "Intel EtherExpress 16 Family LAN Adapter" and click "OK". 8. A dialog box will come up with four settings: Interrupt Number: I/O Port Address: I/O Channel Ready: Transceiver Type: Make sure the values that come up match the actual board settings as configured with FlashSet or SoftSet. Click "OK" to accept the adapter settings. NOTE: DO NOT change the I/O Channel Ready. The proper setting is determined by Windows NT. Changing this parameter could cause the adapter to become inoperable. 9. From the Network Settings window, click "OK". NT will then perform the binding process. If any additional network software options were installed, you may be prompted for specific information for these packages. 10. Restart NT when prompted, in order for the changes to take affect. Troubleshooting Tips: ====================== AT LEAST ONE DEVICE OR DRIVER FAILED DURING SYSTEM STARTUP ---------------------------------------------------------- If Windows NT fails to detect or initialize the EtherExpress 16, you will get this error message in the Event Viewer: "The Intel EtherExpress 16 Family LAN Adapter Driver service failed to start due to the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning. " Try these steps: 1. Verify that the I/O address and interrupt that you specified for the EtherExpress 16 is correct by running SOFTSET.EXE and selecting "View Configuration" from the menu. If the I/O address or interrupt is different than the value you specified when installing Windows NT, select "MANUAL SETUP" from the SoftSet main menu and change the I/O address and interrupt to match the settings in Windows NT 2. Verify that the I/O address and/or interrupt being used by the EtherExpress 16 are not being used by any other device in your workstation like a sound card, faxmodem, scanner, tape backup, serial ports, parallel ports, etc. Look at the documentation or setup programs for the other installed adapters in your computer to verify what I/O address and interrupts they are using. Some sound cards use multiple interrupts and I/O addresses. For example, a typical sound card will use an I/O address of 220 and IRQ 5 for the sound port and an I/O address of 330 and IRQ 11 for the MIDI/Joystick port. 3. Verify that the EtherExpress 16 passes all diagnostic tests by running SOFTSET.EXE from DOS and selecting "RUN DIAGNOSTICS". If the EtherExpress 16 fails diagnostics it will not function correctly under Windows NT. If On-Board diagnostics fail, try setting the EtherExpress 16 to use a different I/O address, a different interrupt, or change Force 8 bit to "YES". If On-Network diagnostics fail, there is likely a cable, connector, or hub problem. Verify that the cabling you are using is connected properly and that the cable is not defective. For more information on cable specifications, view the 10BaseT or COAX ethernet cabling readme files on the EtherExpress 16 LAN adapter and Options disk. Note: "Responder not found" is NOT an error. This message will be displayed IF YOU ARE NOT RUNNING THE SOFTSET RESPONDER ON ANOTHER MACHINE with an EtherExpress card or if the card cannot actually communicate with the responder card. If you do not have a responder running or if the two cards cannot communicate, the diags will try to send packets back to itself. ADAPTER PASSES DIAGNOSTICS BUT STILL DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS NT ------------------------------------------------------------------ If the adapter passes diagnostics but still does not work with Windows NT, there could be a problem with your NT network configuration. If you've made several attempts to configure Windows NT or had another adapter installed before the EtherExpress 16 LAN adapter, it may be necessary to change the Windows NT Network setup to the default settings and reinstall the EtherExpress 16 LAN driver. Here's how: 1. Choose the Network icon in Control Panel. 2. Highlight the Intel EtherExpress Adapter and click "Remove". 3. From the Network Settings window, click "OK". 4. Windows NT will have to reset for the changes to take effect. When prompted, select "Restart Now". 5. Reinstall the EtherExpress 16 LAN adapter following the installation steps above. * Third-party trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
