Release Notes 2.06 Intel EtherExpress(TM) PRO/10+ PCI LAN Adapter ============================================== 82557 Ethernet Controller ------------------------- The PRO/10+ PCI adapter uses the Intel 82557 high-performance Ethernet controller. In some readme files or during driver installation, the PRO/10+ PCI adapter may be referred to as the "Intel 82557-based Ethernet PCI adapter," or similar. Full duplex support ------------------- Full duplex is an optional setting that can improve adapter performance. To run the PRO/10+ PCI adapter at full duplex, you need to be connected to a full duplex switch. If your switch supports full duplex, you need to manually configure the adapter to full duplex. Configuration is specific to your NOS. Refer to the Installation Guide or the "Duplex Support" readme file for complete instructions. The PRO/10+ PCI adapter doesn't support auto-negotiation. EMM386 ------ If you are using Microsoft's EMM386 memory manager with DOS/Windows 3.1, use version 4.49 or later. This version is included with MS-DOS version 6.22, or is available from Microsoft. Busmaster slots --------------- You must install the adapter in a busmaster slot. If the driver fails to load or diagnostics fail, try moving the adapter to a different slot. If you're not sure if your slots are busmaster enabled, see your computer's documentation. PCI BIOS Updates ---------------- Make sure you're using the latest BIOS version for your computer. See the readme file section "Adapter installation and special configurations" for a list of phone numbers of the leading PCI computer manufacturers. You can also check your PC manufacturer's web site. PCI shared interrupts --------------------- The EtherExpress PRO/10+ PCI adapter drivers support shared interrupts in most operating systems (except OS/2). If you think you have another PCI device that doesn't support shared interrupts (for example, a SCSI controller), contact its manufacturer for a shared interrupt driver. Or, try running your computer's CMOS Setup (BIOS configuration) program to assign a unique, non-shared interrupt to one of the PCI devices. Configuring interrupts: PCI computers automatically detect and configure PCI-compliant adapters while booting. The PRO/10+ PCI adapter interrupt and I/O address are automatically set by the BIOS each time you start your computer. If you need to manually change the interrupt, refer to your computer user's guide for instructions. Intel's SETUP and PROSet programs cannot modify the interrupt setting. Configuring your PCI BIOS ------------------------- Some computers allow you to configure various PCI parameters in the BIOS setup. If you have problems installing your adapter, run the BIOS setup program and, if possible, set these parameters: Interrupt type: level-triggered PCI slots: enable The slot where you installed the adapter must be busmaster-enabled. These should already be the default settings. Use the drivers that come with this adapter ------------------------------------------- Use the drivers that come with this adapter. The drivers for the prior version of this adapter (PRO/10 PCI) will not work. For example, if you're using a driver that starts with E10P (such as E10PODI.SYS), it's an older driver. The driver name should begin with E100B. If you download an updated driver from one of our online services in the future, make sure it is for the PRO/10+ PCI LAN adapter. Running diagnostics under Windows NT ------------------------------------ Adapter diagnostics test must see traffic on the network to run properly. If the PRO/10+ PCI adapter is attached to a hub with no other active network connections, you may see the following message when you run adapter diagnostics: Problem: The driver didn't receive any packets at all. This may be caused by a bad or missing cable. Solution: Make sure the cable is securely attached and run this test again. To run adapter diagnostics, connect the computer to a network with traffic, OR power up another computer, connect it to the hub, and log in. SETUP ----- On DOS/Windows 3.1 computers, use the SETUP.EXE utility on the Intel Configuration and Drivers disk to automatically install the DOS ODI driver, run diagnostics, get help with installation problems, and view information and help files. Use the version of SETUP that comes on the disk with this adapter. Previous versions may not work. Run it under MS- DOS only (not in a DOS window opened from Windows*). If you run SETUP with network drivers already loaded, a dialog appears advising you to unload the network drivers. For DOS ODI clients, you can reboot without loading drivers (press F5 when DOS starts), or you can use the unload command from the DOS prompt. For example: C:\vlm /u C:\ipxodi /u C:\e100bodi /u C:\lsl /u Note that unloading drivers must be done in the reverse order of their loading. NetWare 3.11 Servers -------------------- On NetWare 3.11 servers, the driver won't operate correctly unless you modify the server's STARTUP.NCF to include: SET MAXIMUM PHYSICAL RECEIVE PACKET SIZE = 1536 This specifies the size for preallocated server buffers. Use the value shown or larger. See the NetWare 3.11 installation instructions for more details. Note that the 3.2 spec driver for NetWare 3.11 servers is archived in the \NWSERVER\311LAN directory on your Intel Configuration and Drivers Disk. See the NetWare 3.11 readme file for more information. Compaq Prolinea* Deskpro* XL ---------------------------- To work with the EtherExpress PRO/10+ PCI LAN adapter, these two Compaq computers need updated BIOS software. You can download the necessary files from the Compaq website: http://www.compaq.com From the Compaq home page, navigate to the Downloadable Files page. On this page, select the file that corresponds to your Compaq computer model. Follow the instructions provided by Compaq. Using LANDesk(R) Traffic Analyst 2.0 ------------------------------------ If you're using LANDesk Management Suite 2.0 and a Novell DOS ODI client driver on your workstation, load RXMONSTK.COM (supplied by Novell) after loading LSL. Also, be sure you have updated VMON.386 to version 12-14-95 (or later). It supports the latest NetWare ODI client specification (v4.0). You can download the VMON.386 file from our website. Refer to the "Using Intel's Automated Customer Support" readme file for information. NetWare* SFT III ---------------- When using the PRO/10+ PCI LAN adapter in systems running SFT III, add the SFT keyword to the driver load line: LOAD E100B Slot= n SFT=1 The slot number, n corresponds to the PCI slot where the PRO/10+ PCI adapter is installed. If you don't know the slot number for the adapter, the Novell installation software prompts you for a slot number and displays the number for single adapter installations or a list for multiple adapter installations. * Third-party trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
