D-Link Support Publishing \README.TXT January 1996 D-Link DE-220 8/16-Bit ISA Ethernet Adapter Family Contents ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Introduction Requirements Minimum Skill Level Compatibility List Plug N' Play Terminology Getting Started Driver Directory Structure Revision History Other Recommended Accessories Support Options Copyrights, Trademarks, and Disclaimers Introduction ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Thank you for purchasing the D-Link DE-220 Ethernet adapter. This diskette has network driver support for the DE-220 ISA Ethernet adpater family including: DE-220/C/T/CT/CAT/TP DE-220PC/PT/PCT/PCAT DE-220EC/ET/ECT/ECAT There is a format change for this driver disk. All README's have been reformatted, an added easy setup program called AUTOinstall, and added consistency on all documentation provided. Because D-Link is a global corporation, we make products and drivers for many different markets. An example of the wide engineerng development are the Family of cards and a single set of drivers. During 1996, D-Link will change all driver disks to ARJ compression for better driver management and add provisions for even more drivers to the disk. We hope our new readmes and installations will minimize the users effort to make our products work. Should there be further recommendations please contact the support manager at the local D-Link Office listed bellow. Requirements ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ A ISA compatible system A compatible network operating system A DE-220 Family adapter A knowledge of basic DOS commands and editing text files Minimum Skill Level ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ A knowledge of basic DOS commands A knowledge of editing text files A knowledge of DOS's basic file structure (CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT) A knowledge of the network driver configuration being used Please see Support Options if you are not comfortable will this skill level Compatibility List ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ All DE-220 Removal of any present network drivers For a system compatibility list please consult your local D-Link Branch Office Plug N' Play Terminology ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The DE-220P series of the 220 Family adapters are the ISA Plug N' Play compatible adapters . Plug N' Play (PnP) allows the system mother board and the operating system to automatically configure an expansion adapter. To be PnP compliant all three devices need to support PnP. PnP standards were developed in most part by the INTEL corp. Most system boards and our DE-220P series are compliant. At this time Windows 95 is the only fully PnP operating system, but other OS's are implementing the specification very fast. Since PnP is a departure from standard "IBMPC" functional architechture the reference below may help answer questions about PnP. If problems arise from installing PnP please consult the \SETUP\READPNP.TXT for help. Terminology PnP System - Plug and Play System PnP System BIOS - The PnP system BIOS configures all PnP adapters including adapters with system roms or multiple PnP compatible adapters PnP OS - PnP Operating System PnP operating system with PnP system BIOS - All PnP adapters on the system will be configured by PnP operating system with the aid of the system BIOS. PnP operating system without PnP system BIOS - All PnP adapters on the system will be configured by PnP operating system. PnP Compliance via a device driver Non-PnP - Non-Plug and Play System A Non-PnP system is one doesn't have a PnP system BIOS or a PnP compatible Operating system. Non-PnP systems called a legacy system also cannot run addition drivers to force PnP compliance. CM - Plug and Play Configuration Manager A PnP Configuration Manager is a driver program loaded through CONFIG.SYS. A CM driver allows Plug and Play ISA adapters to be configured by the system BIOS. It also allows other device drivers and applications to access the PnP configuration information. ICU - The ISA Configuration Utility The ICU is used to help configure legacy card (Non-PnP compliant cards, such as DE-220 or DE-220E). The ICU records user-selected configuration information into a database file for the systems. This information is used by a PnP system to configure the Plug and Play adapters while avoiding conflict with the legacy card. Respective Trademarks: ICU is provided by Intel. PnP BIOS is provided by BIOS vender. PnP operating system such as Windows 95 : provided by MicroSoft. Configuration Manager (CM) : provided by Intel. Getting Started ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ AUTOinstall is provided to assist ease of setup for users. AUTOinstall will configure drivers, install the appropriate network drivers for popular network operating systems, and run diagnostics on DE-220 adapters. To run AUTOinstall, simply run INSTALL.EXE program in the root of the driver disk. (ie. A:\INSTALL) If the network operating system you are using is not covered by the installation program, refer to the individual documentation provided for each driver directory. Driver Directory Structure ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The network drivers on this disk is organized in the following structure. Each directory contains a README.TXT file which provides you with detailed installation instructions for drivers in that directory: All drivers will automatically detect the hardware information including I/O base address and IRQ. The network media connector type will also be automatically detected during driver initialization.
