INSTRUCT.TXT File 3Com Corporation 3Com EtherLink III LAN/Modem PC Card (3C562 PC Card family) Configuration and Diagnostic Instructions Summary This file is contains information on running the configuration and diagnostic utilities provided on the EtherDisk diskette. Topics include: Overview Running DOS INSTALL under Windows 95 Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic utility Configuration Changes Diagnostic Tests Where to Get Additional Information Overview -------- The configuration portion of the program lets you change the configuration parameters for the adapter to accommodate a specific operating environment. The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and Diagnostic Program ensures that the adapter is installed correctly and functioning properly. The basic tests check the physical components, connectors, and circuitry of the adapter and require only that the adapter be installed in the computer. The Echo tests check the adapter's ability to transmit data on the network and require that the adapter be connected to a network. The computer containing the adapter to be configured or tested must be running DOS only. Running DOS INSTALL Under Windows 95 ------------------------------------------ The INSTALL runs in enabler mode only. It cannot access Windows 95 Card and Socket Services. The point enabler should operate normally provided your laptop has an Intel (or Intel-compatible) PC Card controller. If you try to run INSTALL with an incompatible controller, the program will report that it could not detect the LAN+Modem card. Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic utility ------------------------------------------------- There are two ways to start the program: 1. From the INSTALL.EXE program, by selecting Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu. 2. Manually, from the root directory of the EtherDisk diskette, by typing the following command: INSTALL [command keyword] [parameter list] INSTALL represents the 3Com Configuration and Diagnostic Program name. The brackets indicate that the command keyword and parameter list are optional. INSTALL without any arguments invokes the program in full windows mode. Command Line Keywords --------------------- The command keywords and parameters are not case-sensitive, so CONFIGURE, configure, and Configure, for example, will all work. CONFIGURE Configures an adapter using command line configuration parameters Configuration changes --------------------- The adapter can be configured in either full screen windows mode or command line mode. Full Screen Windows Mode ------------------------ To configure the adapter using full-screen windowing, type: INSTALL [Enter]. Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu. Command Line Mode ----------------- Command Line with Explicit Parameters ------------------------------------- Command syntax: INSTALL CONFIGURE [ /AUTO /IOBASE:N /INT:N /TR:N /MODEM:N /OPTIMIZE:N /POWER:N /LINKBEAT:N ] Each parameter must be of the structure "/keyword:value" and contain no blank spaces. For example: /iobase:300 /int:3 Command line configuration parameters are used to configure the adapter using only the option settings you specify. In most cases, any combination of parameters can be used. Therefore, it is possible to modify only a few settings if needed. /AUTO The /AUTO parameter configures the adapter automatically based on the software's best estimate using interpreted system information. /IOBASE I/O Base Address Possible values - 200,210,220,230,240,250,260,270,280,290,2A0 2B0,2C0,2D0,2E0,2F0,300,310,320,330,340,350,360,370,380,390,3A0 /INT Interrupt Level Possible values - 3,5,7,9,10,11,12,15 /TR Transceiver Type Possible values - AUTO, TP, COAX /MODEM Maximum Interrupt Disable Time Possible values - NoModem, 1200, 2400, 9600, 19200, 38400 /OPTIMIZE Network Driver Optimization Possible values - DOS, WINDOWS, SERVER /POWER 3Com's Power Reduction Possible values - ENABLE, DISABLE /LINKBEAT Link beat disable/enable (pre-10BASE-T standard only) Possible values - ENABLE, DISABLE NOTE: Try this setting ONLY if pre-10BASE-T standard hubs are in use. Where to Get Additional Information ----------------------------------- If the adapter fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the TROUBLE.TXT file in the \HELP directory on the EtherDisk diskette for troubleshooting procedures. The SUPPORT.TXT file in the \HELP subdirectory on the EtherDisk diskette provides information about obtaining product support for the adapter. 3Com, EtherDisk, and EtherLink are registered trademarks of 3Com Corporation.
