Ref: 17320022 Title: Installing EtherLink 16 (3C507) Adapters in NetWare 2.15 Clients Copyright 3Com Corporation, 1992. All rights reserved. Novell uses a program called SHGEN to generate a workstation shell for each workstation on the network. This process includes selecting a LAN driver, configuring the driver to match the settings of the particular adapter, and "linking" the configuration information to the IPX protocol stack. The file created from this "linking" is called IPX.COM. A separate IPX.COM must be created for each type of adapter and each particular configuration setting. If you use an EtherLink 16 (3C507) in multiple workstations, you can use the same copy of IPX.COM in these workstations. Before starting the SHGEN program, you should have installed, configured and tested your EtherLink 16 or 16/TP adapter, using the 3C507.EXE Diagnostics and Configuration Utility program. You will need a copy of 3Com's EtherLink 16 Etherdisk to complete this installation. This document assumes you will be installing from floppy diskettes and have read, or have in your possession, all Installation and Setup manuals from Novell. 1. Format a diskette and label it LAN_DRV_507. (Note: See your DOS guide for instructions on formatting and labeling diskettes.) 2. Copy all files from the \NOVELL\286 subdirectory on the EtherLink 16's EtherDisk to the root directory on the LAN_DRV_507 diskette. 3. Start the NetWare 2.15 Workstation Installation Process according to the procedures in Novell's "Installation Set for SFT/Advanced" manual. 4. At the Shell Configuration Level menu, highlight "Custom Configuration" and press Enter. 5. At the SHGEN Run Options menu, highlight "Standard (floppy disks)" and press Enter. 6. From the Shell Generation Options menu, highlight "Select Shell Configuration" and press Enter. This will bring up an Available Options menu. 7. From this menu you will highlight "Select Resource Sets (optional)", if needed, and then highlight "Select LAN Driver". When you highlight "Select LAN Driver" and press Enter, a LAN Driver Options menu appears. 8. Highlight "Load and Select Item" and press Enter. Follow the prompt to "Insert disk matching LAN_DRV_??? in any drive", then press Esc to continue. 9. Insert the LAN_DRV_507 diskette you created in steps 1 and 2 above and press Esc. The 3Com 3C507 EtherLink 16 driver will now appear in the Available LAN Drivers menu. Highlight it and press Enter. 10. Press Esc at the LAN Drivers Options menu. This will return you to the Available Options menu. Because the EtherLink 16 and 16/TP are self configuring, there is no need to choose "Configure Driver/Resources", unless you selected a Resource Set in step 7 above. 11. Choose "Edit Resource List" and/or "Edit Resource Set" if necessary for your installation. 12. Highlight "Save Selections and Continue" and press Enter. At the Continue Shell Generation Using Selected Configurations, select "Yes" and press Enter. You will be returned to the Shell Generation Options menu. 13. Highlight "Link NetWare Shell" and press Enter. Follow the prompts and enter the appropriate diskettes when needed. When you have been returned to the Shell Generation Options menu, the linking is complete. 14. Choose "Exit SHGEN" and press Enter, and highlight "Yes" at the Exit SHGEN menu to be returned to an A:> prompt. The IPX.COM you just created will be located on the SHGEN-2 diskette. 15. To complete the process, copy the IPX.COM file to your boot device, along with the appropriate NETx.com file. (Note: The x in NETx refers to the Major DOS revision running on your Workstation. For example, if you are using DOS 3.31, you would copy the NET3.COM file.) For more information on SHGEN and NetWare 2.15 Workstations, consult your NetWare documentation.
