MSCMOUSE.DOC SELF-EXTRACTING ARCHIVE MSCMOUSE.DOC contains information about the Mouse System mouse driver, Designer Pop-up Menus, utility programs, and changes since the manual was printed. Most of the mouse files are compressed inside self-extracting archive file MFILES.EXE. We used this type of file to save space and reduce the number of diskettes to handle. MFILES.EXE contains the following files in compressed form: FILE PURPOSE mscmouse.doc This information file mscmouse.sys MSC's Microsoft-compatible mouse device driver cardgame.exe Klondike Solitaire game - requires the mouse cardgame.hlp Klondike Solitaire game - help menu popup.com Designer Pop-up Menu handler program, load after mouse driver m_dbase3.com dBase III with Assist m_lotus.com Lotus 1-2-3 m_plain.com Generic m_wp500.com Word Perfect 5.0 m_ws.com Wordstar 3.3 m_ws5.com Wordstar 5.0 ultrares.doc Info about customizing Ultra-Res Dynamic Accelerator ultrares.exe Program to load custom acceleration table into mouse driver ultrares.tab Example Ultra-Res acceleration table pkzip.exe Program to compress and archive files to save disk space pkunzip.exe Program to extract files from archive created by pkarc.com pkmanual.doc Documentation on pkzip.exe and pkunzip.exe HOW TO EXTRACT FILES FROM THE ARCHIVE To extract some or all of the files from the archive, assuming MFILES.EXE is on the diskette in drive A:, enter the following command: A:MFILES <-arg> where is an argument (? to list the allowed arguments, T to list the archive contents), is a valid drive and directory pathname, and is a list of file names to extract, separated by spaces. For example: A:MFILES -T list files in the archive A:MFILES C:\MOUSE extract all files to directory C:\MOUSE A:MFILES C:\MOUSE *.DOC extract all document files READ THE DOC FILES FOR MORE INFORMATION You should read the files with the extension .DOC for more information on use of the software that comes with your MSC mouse. You can do this without actually extracting them from the self-extracting archive. Enter the following command, and then press Ctrl-S to start and stop the display: MFILES -C *.DOC MAIN MOUSE DRIVERS Mouse Systems mice come with two main mouse software programs called drivers. They allow the computer to communicate with the mouse: MSCMOUSE.COM and MSCMOUSE.SYS. They are functionally identical, but are loaded in different ways. You may use only one of them at a time. You must have your mouse connected to the computer when you run the mouse driver, or else the driver will delete itself from memory. MSCMOUSE.COM is an executable program of the terminate-and-stay-resident variety. When you run it, it loads into memory and stays there, then returns you to the DOS prompt. If you run it again, it can change its internal setup. If you enter the command as a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, the system will load it into memory when you boot the computer. MSCMOUSE.SYS is a driver that you may invoke at boot time by putting a DEVICE=MSCMOUSE.SYS line in your CONFIG.SYS file. You may prefer to use MSCMOUSE.SYS rather than MSCMOUSE.COM because other resident programs are not likely to interfere with the .SYS file. We recommend that you use it only if you have trouble with MSCMOUSE.COM. To invoke the MSCMOUSE.COM driver, enter the command MSCMOUSE , where represents one of the command line options. A complete listing of the command line options can be found in the MSC Mouse Setup and User's Guide in the section called MSCMOUSE COMMAND LINE OPTIONS. Complete information on the mouse driver's function calls is available from Mouse Systems in the Developer's Toolkit. ULTRA-RES DYNAMIC ACCELERATOR The Ultra-Res Dynamic Accelerator is built into MSCMOUSE.COM and MSCMOUSE.SYS. It only works with applications that do not use their own built-in mouse drivers. For complete information, read ULTRARES.DOC. DESIGNER POP-UP MENUS Your Mouse Systems mouse software comes with a Designer Pop-up Menu system that lets you use the mouse to control non-mouse applications. Examples are Lotus 1-2-3 (versions 2.1 and earlier) and Word Perfect (version 5.0). You must have the standard Mouse Systems mouse driver already loaded into memory, as described above, before running a pop-up menu program. Then you must run the POPUP.COM program to load the pop-up menu handler. Next, you must run the pop-up menu for your application program. Finally, run the application program. If you want to run a different application for which a pop-up menu is available, run the menu without executing the POPUP command again. To run POPUP.COM, enter the POPUP command, where is one of the following command line arguments: /? Display status info /H Display help info /S To Deactivate (Stop) /M:n Allocate n kilobytes for Menus (default 23, max 58) /V:c Use Hercules page number c (0,1) To run the Menu program M_xxx.COM, where xxx is the name of the corresponding application program, just enter the menu file name. For example, entering the command M_LOTUS will invoke the Lotus 1-2-3 Pop-up Menu program. If the desired menu program is not on your work disk, you can extract it from MFILES.EXE, or run INSTALL again. The complete source code for ALL Designer Pop-up Menus is provided with your mouse is available in the Mouse Systems Programmers' Toolkit. OTHER PROGRAMS Special programs in the MFILES.EXE that you can use for fun and efficiency are: CARDGAME.EXE - a solitaire card game that can catch cheaters! PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE -- archiving and de-archiving utilities. You can use these programs to save space on floppies and hard diskS. They compress files to half their size or less, then pack them all together efficiently into one file. Read the .DOC files for full information. DEVELOPER'S TOOLKIT You can order Mouse Systems Developer's Toolkit which contains documentation on all the mouse driver calls, examples of their use, and ALL the source code for the Designer Pop-Up Menus. MSCMOUSE.DOC 4/15/91 The following are changes or additions to the Mouse Manual. The INSTALL Program ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The INSTALL program will add the MSCMOUSE command line to the BEGINNING of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Mouse Acceleration ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can change the acceleration of the mouse using the Mouse Control Panel. If you choose not to load the Mouse Control Panel, you can change the acceleration in the following way: 1) Press . Your system will beep once. 2) Press a digit from 0 to 9. This number represents the amount of Mouse Systems' acceleration you wish. 0=no acceleration, 9=max acceleration. 3) Your system should beep twice, indicating the new acceleration values are in effect. Mouse Control Panel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Mouse Control Panel has several command line switches. These switches allow you to customize the Control Panel for different video modes, as well as offerring the option of unloading the Control Panel. These options are explained on page 30 of the manual. To use these options, type: CPANEL /x, where x is the command line option you wish to invoke.
