Disk Contents ============= Application Files ----------------- When you receive the ScanMan 2.11 software, some of the files on the application disk have been compressed. For more information on decompressing files manually, see the "Decompressing Program Application Files" section below. The following is a list and description of the files on your ScanMan application disk: READMESM.TXT Application Information File (this file) INSTALL.EXE ScanMan 2.11 Installation Program INSTALL.INF Installation List File LGEXPAND.EXE Executable Utility for decompressing application files manually from the release disk SCANMAN2.DS ScanMan Image Source SCANMAN.INI ScanMan Option File SCANMAN.HLP ScanMan Help File TWAIN.DLL TWAIN Source Manager ASTITCH.DLL AutoStitch Library HHSCANW.DLL ScanMan Windows Scanner Driver VHHSCAND.386 ScanMan Windows Scanner Driver for 386 Enhanced Mode @6DAC.ADF PS/2 Scanner Configuration File HHSCAND.SYS ScanMan DOS Scanner Driver HHSCAND.TXT ScanMan DOS Scanner Driver Installation Instructions Location of Files created by the Installation Program ----------------------------------------------------- The installation program creates the following directories: - C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN - C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN\SCANMAN The installation program copies the following files to the Windows directory: C:\WINDOWS TWAIN.DLL VHHSCAND.386 SCANMAN.INI C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN\SCANMAN SCANMAN2.DS SCANMAN.HLP HHSCANW.DLL ASTITCH.DLL READMESM.TXT The following ScanMan DOS driver file is not installed. If you need it for your DOS scanning software, please refer to the HHSCAND.TXT file that is provided on the application disk. HHSCAND.SYS ScanMan DOS Scanner Driver The following PS/2 configuration file is not installed. If you own a PS/2 Micro Channel Architecture computer, please refer to your ScanMan documentation for more information on its configuration with the scanner board. @6DAC.ADF PS/2 Scanner Configuration File Decompressing Program Application Files --------------------------------------- Files on the installation disks that end with "%" have been compressed to maximize disk space. These files must be decompressed so you can use them. To decompress a file manually, use the LGEXPAND.EXE utility provided on the release disk. For example, to decompress the file "SCANMAN.HL%" and copy it to your hard disk, type the following at the DOS prompt: LGEXPAND A:\SCANMAN.HL% C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN\SCANMAN\SCANMAN.HLP Disk Space Requirements ----------------------- When installed, ScanMan 2.11 uses approximately 500 kilobytes of disk space. 2. Technical Notes =============== TWAIN ----- The ScanMan Image Source works with all applications that comply with the TWAIN image source standard. What to do if the "Not Enough Memory" Message Appears ----------------------------------------------------- If the "Not Enough Memory" prompt appears, do either of the following: 1. Scan a strip which uses less memory. This is done by scanning a shorter strip or using a lower resolution setting. 2. Free memory and/or hard disk space. ScanMan uses memory and the hard disk to temporarily store the strips. To approximately determine the size of each strip, refer to Chapter 4 "Tips & Techniques" in the ScanMan User's Guide. Cleanup After An Unexpected Application Termination --------------------------------------------------- If ScanMan unexpectedly terminates, exit Windows. Temporary files created by ScanMan may subsequently remain on your hard disk. Look for and delete files named "~ANSxxxx.TMP", where xxxx is a random sequence of numbers and letters. Because of the unexpected termination, there could be some files left opened. To correct this you should run the CHKDSK DOS command. At the DOS prompt, type the following DOS command: CHKDSK /F and press the Enter key Memory Managers and Windows Standard Mode ----------------------------------------- The ScanMan software will not run in Windows standard mode if an expanded memory manager such as QEMM386.SYS, EMM386.EXE, or 386MAX.SYS is loaded. Either run Windows in 386 enhanced mode, or remove the expanded memory manager line from the CONFIG.SYS file. Norton Desktop 2.0 ------------------ The ScanMan software may hang if you run under Norton Desktop 2.0 in Windows 386 enhanced mode. If you run into this problem, you must modify the NDW.INI file, found in your Windows directory. Search for the line Int21hHook=1 in the [NHookSettings] section. Change this line to read Int21hHook=0 Alternatively, you could run Windows in standard mode. Speed Warning Beep ------------------ Under Windows 3.1, the default beep is used for the speed warning beep even if you have assigned this via the Control Panel. If you have the Wired for Sound software loaded, the speed warning will not sound. This prevents conflicts between the scanner and the sound driver. ScanMan Color Timeout --------------------- The time out value for the ScanMan Color Scanner is 60 seconds. The time out value will remain 30 seconds for all other scanners. This feature turns the scanning light off, if the scanner remains inactive for 60 seconds. The time out prolongs the life of your scanner. PS/2 Model 80 ------------- On most PS/2 machines, running the automatic configuration from the reference disk works properly. On the model 80, the automatic configuration doesn't always give you a valid setting for your computer. You must manually set the DMA level of the hard disk. The DMA level used for the hard disk should be smaller than the DMA level you want to use for your scanner adapter. Temp2Path --------- ScanMan allows you to change the default directory it uses to store the second temporary image swap file. The drive used for the first temporary swap file is obtained from Windows. It is usually the drive specified by the "TEMP=xxx" DOS environment variable, or the root directory on the C drive. The second temporary swap file will be created on a drive different from that used for the first temporary swap file. ScanMan normally looks on drives C, D, and E for the largest free space. ScanMan uses the "Temp2Path" variable in SCANMAN.INI to set the location of the second temporary swap file. To set this, modify your SCANMAN.INI file. Under the heading [Options], remove the semicolon preceding "Temp2Path", and replace "c:\tmp" with the desired drive and directory. Note: It is important to keep a large amount of empty disk space in the "temp" and "Temp2Path" drives. "Not Enough Disk Space" Message during the Installation Program --------------------------------------------------------------- The ScanMan installation program copies several files to your Windows directory. If you have less than 500 kilobytes of free disk space on the drive where Windows is installed, the install program displays an error message asking for more disk space on the drive where Windows is installed. If you are running Windows in 386 enhanced mode and you have approximately 1 megabyte of free disk space, the install program may display an error message asking for more disk space. Windows creates some temporary files when you run under 386 enhanced mode. Because of this, the amount of disk space available is less than what you had before starting Windows. AutoStitch Scanning Tip ----------------------- If you cannot merge images successfully, try putting two cross marks that are at least 1/2 inch tall and wide at the top and bottom of the image. The two cross marks should be placed in the area where the two scan strips will overlap each other. After the strips are merged, use your application to crop the cross marks. If you cannot merge landscape images successfully, try scanning them in portrait mode. Changing the orientation could change the distinct features found in the overlap area. These features help AutoStitch in merging the strips. Please refer to the ScanMan User's Guide for guidelines for scanning an image in multiple strips. Sound Cards ----------- The SoundBlaster and SoundBlaster Pro cards usually use IRQ 7 and DMA 1. Make sure the IRQ and DMA settings for ScanMan are set to selections other than what your sound card uses. The ProAudio Spectrum 16, by default, uses both DMA 1 and DMA 3. If you have the ScanMan Color scanner, make sure the card is plugged in a 16-bit slot. From the ScanMan Hardware Setup dialog box, select a DMA channel other than 1 or 3. If you have the ScanMan 256, ScanMan 32, ScanMan Plus, or ScanMan scanner, you will need to change the settings for the ProAudio card by modifying the CONFIG.SYS file. Usually, the ProAudio entry reads as follows: DEVICE=C:\PROAUDIO\MVSOUND.SYS D:3 Q:7 where D:3 is the DMA channel setting for the CD quality sound section of the card. Change this to D:1. From the ScanMan Hardware Setup dialog box, set the DMA to 3. Refer to your sound card user's manual for further options. * * * * *
