Although the initial preparation of the master drive is more time consuming than using Disk Size, using a Track Range file will more accurately determine the exact number of tracks to copy. See section 4.0 in the Octet Station Users Manual for more information on Track Range files. Disk Size - When Disk Size is chosen, the user specifies how many megabytes of the master drive will be copied. To determine this amount, put the master drive in a separate PC system, boot to a DOS floppy, and fully defragment the master drive. Run CHKDSK and add up how many bytes are being used by hidden files, directories, and user files. This total will be the Disk Size. It is recommended to increase the Disk Size amount by 5-10% to ensure that all of the data is copied. (Ex. - If the total of the disk space used on the master drive is 50 MB, add 5 MB for a Disk Size of 55 MB). IMPORTANT - You must defragment the master drive before running CHKDSK or it is possible that some data may not be copied to the target drives. Even after running a defragmentation program, some system or hidden files may not be moved, so it may be necessary to either reformat and reinstall the software on the master drive, or increase the number of megabytes specified for the Disk Size. Choosing Disk Copy ModeAdvantageDisadvantageWhole Disk -Copies entire drive. - Takes longer since the whole disk is copied.Track Range- Faster. Copies only the tracks that contain data. - Master drive must be initially prepared using DISKPREP and SCANTRAK to create the Track Range file.Disk Size- No preparation of master drive needed. The amount of tracks to copy is calculated based on the Disk Size entry.- Recommended only for DOS, Windows 3.1x, and Windows 95 installations. - Unmoveable files may not copy properly. Track Range copying drives with multiple partitions The Scantrak utility (version 1.21) can now create a Track Range File with multiple ranges. Previously, if a drive had more than one partition on it, all tracks up to the last partition had to be copied, even those containing no data. Instead of stopping at the last-used track on the hard drive, SCANTRAK will now scan the entire drive and create a Track Range File that will copy only those tracks containing data. When you start the SCANTRAK utility two options will appear - Scan the last used track - This will function as referenced in the Octet Station Users Manual, scanning from the last track of the drive until it finds a data track and creating a single range Track Range File. Use this option if you only have one partition on the Master drive. Scan the used track ranges - Use this option if you have multiple partitions on the Master drive. Refer to your Octet Station Users Manual for more information on using the SCANTRAK utility. Using LBA Mode LBA Mode option only applies when doing a File Mode copy. (NOTE: When doing a Track Mode copy there is no option to specify whether LBA is enabled or disabled since the partition information of the master drive will automatically be copied to the target drives. This means that if the master drive was partitioned using LBA, the target drives will have LBA partitions as well.). When the target drive(s) support LBA translation but the system BIOS does not, LBA formatting of the target drives can be disabled so the system can read the copied drive (Ex. - you have a 540 MB drive that has been formatted to 528 MB in order to work with a system BIOS that does not support LBA translation). The LBA Mode option will only affect the target drives. Disabling LBA translation for the target drives will not disable LBA translation on the master drive. Save Setup Configuration Upon exiting the Octet utility an OCTET.INI file will be created. This file will restore the last-used settings when the OCTET utility is restarted. Hard Drive and Power Cables The IDE and power cables provided are different than those described in the Octet Station Users Manual. The new cables have been designed to be longer lasting and make replacement easier by using standard, readily available parts. You should have the following cables - Master drive power cable extension (4) - Target drive power Y-cable extensions - 2.5 long IDE cable couplers (D-type 50-pin connector to 40-pin male connector) (9) - 7 long IDE cable extensions NOTE: The (9) 9 Hard Drive cables described on page 3-1 of the Octet Station. User Manual are no longer included with the OCTET STATION. They are replaced by the (9) 2.5 IDE cable couplers and (9) 7 long IDE cable extensions. Installation - Connect the D-Type 50-pin male side of the 2.5 long IDE cable coupler to the CABLE-MASTER and the 8 CABLE-TARGET D-Type 50-pin female connectors located on the front panel of the Octet Station. Connect one end of the 7 IDE cable extensions to the 40-pin male connector of the 2.5 IDE cable coupler. The other end of each 7 IDE cable extension connects to each hard drive to be used with the Octet Station. IMPORTANT: Make sure that Pin 1 (the colored or marked edge) of the IDE cable coupler is aligned with Pin 1 of the IDE cable extension as well as Pin 1 on the IDE drives. Failure to follow this procedure could result in damage to the Octet Station or hard drives. When changing hard drives, handle only the 7 IDE cable extension instead of the 2.5 IDE cable coupler. This will result in less wear and tear of the 2.5 IDE cable coupler. Should one of the 7 IDE cables require replacement, do not use a cable longer than 7 in length. The Master drive power cable extension should be attached to the Master DC Power cable, and only the extension should be handled when adding or removing the Master drive to minimize wear and tear of the Master DC Power cable. The Target drive power Y-cable extension should be attached to one branch of the Target DC Power Y-cable (there will then be one branch of the Target DC Power Y-cable with nothing attached to it), and only the extension should be handled when adding or removing a Target drive to minimize wear and tear of the Target DC Power Y-cable. The Target drive power Y-cable extension can be replaced with any standard power Y-cable. How to install 2 Octet Stations In the same PC, you may install 2 Octet Conductors and connect 2 Octet Stations so that the duplication capacity may be expanded to 16 targets at once. This attachment provides more information. Installing Second Octet Station: Refer to your Users Guide to install the 1st Octet Station. Throughout this document this Octet Station will be referred to as Station-1 and the corresponding Octet Conductor as Conductor-1. NOTE: It is suggested to mark these as Conductor-1 and Station-1 for easier identification later. Adjust the jumpers JP2 and JP3 on the second Octet Conductor (which will be referred to as Conductor-2 later) according to the following diagram: Refer to Chap. 2.4 of your Users Manual to install the Conductor adapter cables from Conductor-2 and Station-2. NOTE: It is suggested to mark Conductor-2 and Station-2 on this station for easier identification later. Install the cables (CABLE-TARGET1~8) to the disk connectors in the front panel of the Station-2. NOTE: THERE IS NO MASTER DISK ON STATION-2 SO THERE WILL BE NO NEED TO CONNECT CABLE-MASTER. 5. Connect the DC power cables (power conn.) to the DC Connector in the front panel of Station-2. Fig. 2 How to connect cables when 2 Octet Stations are used Running the Octet Utility: The START / STOP button on Station-1 is the only button that will function. The START / STOP button on Station-2 will be disabled. 2. The Octet utility program will display the information of all 16 target disks as in the following diagram: Octet Station Utility V1.21 (C)Copyright 1995 PROMISE Technology, Inc.
