FM: PROMISE TECHNICAL SUPPORT RE: OS/2 WARP 3.0 Installation Models: DC4030VL/VL-1/VL-2; DC420; DC200 Promise Caching controllers will not run with the default OS/2 v3.0 Warp driver - IBM1s506.ADD driver. Some additional driver switches can be added to the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS or our PROMISE OS/2 driver can be substituted. The switch "SMS" or Set Multiple Support, or ATA Multiple Mode, is not compatible with the Promise Caching controllers. The new OS/2 v3.0 (unlike OS/2 v2.x) has enabled this switch as default. To disable SMS, these drivers switches can be added to the CONFIG.SYS. Example - Disable SMS on two IDE HDs installed on the Primary controller; In the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS, change the line with the IBM1S506.ADD driver BASEDEV=IBM1s506.ADD /A:0 /U:0 /!SMS /U:1 /!SMS Below is a partial list of the available switches for this driver. You may also choose type "HELP IBM1s506.ADD" from OS/2 for complete information. /V Verbose Mode - displays controller status when driver loads /A:0 Adapter number - "0" for Primary controller; "1" for Secondary /I Ignore adapter /U:0 Unit on adapter (adapter defined with /A); 0-Master 1-Slave /!SMS Disable SMS support /SMS Enable SMS support The Promise OS/2 driver "PTI1s506.ADD" driver can be installed which supports a Promise proprietary SMS Multiple mode which loads automatically. Be sure to download the latest OS/2 driver v1.41 from our BBS - "OS2_141.ZIP". To install Warp 3.0 with PTI1s506.ADD: Make a working diskcopy of the second installation disk to be used for this installation. On the copy of the second disk, delete IBM1s506.ADD from the floppy. With a system editor, edit the CONFIG.SYS on the second floppy changing the line "BASEDEV=IBM1s506.ADD" to BASEDEV=PTI1s506.ADD Begin the standard OS/2 Warp install with original first disk and the working copy of the second disk. To change an existing Warp 3.0 install: Boot to an OS/2 floppy. Copy the PTI1s506.ADD driver into the OS2 directory. In the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS find and change the line BASEDEV=IBM1s506.ADD to: BASEDEV=PTI1S506.ADD Either the addition of switches to the IBM1s506.ADD driver or the Promise PTI1s506.ADD OS/2 driver will work. The Promise driver will give the additional benefits of Multiple Mode support and 4 IDE HD support.
