USE OF SOFTMODE TO SET UP VGA CARD AND NEW WINDOWS DRIVERS ---------------------------------------------------------- This disk contains two versions of softmode. Depending on your particular board, one of the files will work. If your board uses the IC2494 clock generator (a 20 pin chip near NCR's VGA chip on your board), you will use the files in the SMIVESA directory. If the clock generator is a Avesem 9194, then you will use the files in the SMPVESA directory. If you're not sure which you have, try the files in the SMIVESA directory first. Copy all the files in the SMIVESA directory to your NCRVGA directory (or whatever is your directory for VGA files). Remove the line containing softmode from your CONFIG.SYS file if there is such a line. This can be done at the C: prompt by entering edit config.sys Now go to the NCRVGA directory and enter "softset." The main menu should appear. You will want to view and select all modes that are acceptable on your monitor so choose that option and follow the instructions that follow. After you have selected which modes are acceptable, return to the main menu of softmode. From the main menu choose the enable vesa functions option and answer the questions to enable the vesa functions. This allows programs (usually games, CAD packages, etc.) to use the vesa drivers. At the main menu, choose the option to update your CONFIG.SYS line. The line it is adding to the CONFIG.SYS file should be similar to this: device=c:\vga\sftmd\softmode.sys /m:13,12,8,10,14,11,20,67,19,100,110,101,111,103 /V The Windows 3.1 drivers are also located on this disk for the 77C22E+.
