CONTENTS ======== WINDOWS 95 ISDN FUNCTIONALITY INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING WINDOWS 95 ISDN CONNECTING WITH YOUR ISDN ADAPTER CHANGING SETTINGS FOR YOUR ISDN ADAPTER KNOWN PROBLEMS WINDOWS 95 ISDN FUNCTIONALITY ============================= This second beta release includes the necessary support in Microsoft(R) Windows(R) for remote access over ISDN. Although ISDN on a PC is possible today, special ISDN programs are required to take advantage of it. The addition of support in the operating system for ISDN dramatically broadens the range of programs available. Instead of requiring specialized programs that work only with ISDN, users will be able to run any networked Windows-based program over ISDN. This release provides all the support for an application to initiate remote connections exactly as would be done using a modem. This release works with drivers for some specific ISDN adapters; however, many other drivers are in progress and will be available soon. Contact your ISDN hardware vendor for information on when additional drivers will be available. This release of ISDN in Windows can only be used for data transmission. Microsoft does not currently support voice or other types of ISDN access. Both Voice support and Multilink capability are planned for an upcoming release. CONNECTING WITH YOUR ISDN ADAPTER ================================= After completing the adapter installation and restarting your computer without any error messages, you are ready to create a Dial-Up Networking connection. Make sure you have installed the cables provided with your adapter, that the line indicators are good on the NT-1 (if required), and that the line is active. Dial-up Networking should be already installed on your machine. To create a connection: * Start Dial-Up Networking by selecting Start|Programs|Accessories|Dial-Up Networking from the Windows 95 start menu. * If the Make New Connection wizard does not automatically start, double-click the Make New Connection icon. * On the first screen, fill in the name of your new Connection. In the Select a modem list, choose your ISDN adapter. Click Next. * Fill in the area code, phone number, and country code for the computer you want to call. Click next. * Click Finish. * You can now make a connection over ISDN by simply double-clicking the new icon you just created, entering your account name and password, and clicking Connect. CHANGING SETTINGS FOR YOUR ISDN ADAPTER ======================================= To change configuration settings for your ISDN adapter after you have initially configured the adapter according to these instructions, click with the right mouse button on the Dial-Up Networking icon you created above, click Properties, then click Configure, then click Advanced. You can then change your configuration settings in the Line and Connection tabs. To configure networking protocols or unusual TCP/IP settings, right-click on the Dial-Up Networking Connectoid, click Properties, then Server Type, then TCP/IP Settings. KNOWN PROBLEMS ============== Shadowing in Gateway machines with an AMI BIOS must be turned off ----------------------------------------------------------------- If an AMI BIOS in Gateway machines has shadowing turned on for the ranges of memory that the Digi PCIMAC board uses for its shared memory, the PCIMAC board will fail when it attempts to access the shadowed memory. Turning off shadowing fixes the problem. Cannot Use DOS Net Commands With Eicon Adapters ----------------------------------------------- If you have made a connection with an Eicon Adapter and attempt to access the server you are connected to with either the "net view" or "net use" DOS commands (net view \\server or net use * \\server\share), you will get an error. Suspend mode on some laptops may cause error -------------------------------------------- If you are using a PCMCIA adapter and close the lid of your laptop or press suspend, you may get an error. If this happens, restart the machine. TCP, IPX or NetBEUI protocols are needed ---------------------------------------- Although NDISWAN shows up as a protocol, you still need to have TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, or NetNEUI installed. Exchange Over ISDN in Connected Mode May Hang On Disconnect ---------------------------------------------------------- If you are running Exchange over ISDN in connected mode rather than using the remote mail feature, your computer may hang when you disconnect, even if you close Exchange before disconnecting. This is because MAPI stays in memory for 30 seconds after Exchange is closed. To avoid this problem, do not disconnect until 30 seconds after exiting Exchange. USR Driver Can Not Be Disabled ------------------------------ Disabling the USR driver by using Device Manager results in system failure. Configuration of Bonding (128K) in Digi driver is not automatic --------------------------------------------------------------- To configure bonding with the Digi adapter, you must configure only your data SPID(s) during the configuration process. Should not use USR Turbo PPP with some servers ---------------------------------------------- If Turbo PPP is enabled in the USR driver, your Windows 95 client might not work well with certain kinds of PPP servers. If you have difficulty interoperating with a PPP server, disable Turbo PPP, and then try again. Trap 14 During Installation of USR adapter ------------------------------------------ An error may occur on some machines during installation of the USR adapter when you are in the process of restarting your machine. Resetting your computer allows installation to continue normally. Reconnection May Fail After First Connection With Digi PCIMAC ------------------------------------------------------------- If a connection to MSN or the Internet is established, broken, than a reconnection attempted, the reconnection attempt may fail with an error "cannot establish a compatible protocol.", or you may have to redial multiple times to re-establish the connection. This happens only when both SPIDs were entered during configuration. Removing the second SPID should solve the problem (see the section CHANGING SETTINGS FOR YOUR ISDN ADAPTER in this file for information on how to do this). Restarting the computer also allows a connection to be made again.
