CONNECTION AND TERMINATORS. Check connection and terminator settings of the drive and the host adapter. You can connect up to four CD-ROM drives in a chain. The following pages give you some typical examples of the terminator settings regarding the number of connected drive(s). One naked drive installed inside of the computer. ==> page 7. One stand alone drive outside of the computer. ==> page 8. SWITCH SETTINGS OF THE DRIVE(S). 1-3-1. SELECT SWITCHES. Check if the select switch settings of each drive is correct. Most of case, the switch "0" is set to on and others are set to off because only one CD-ROM drive is connected to the host adapter. In this case the drive letter which is specified in AUTOEXEC.BAT file is applied to the drive. If you have connected multiple drives in a chain, you have to set the switches to different number for each drive. Refer to Operating Instructions of each CD-ROM drive. Refer to CUSTOMIZATION of README.DOC file for the drive letter in AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 1-3-2. DRQ/WAIT SWITCH. You must set this switch to DRQ MODE. Otherwise data error may happen. page 11 CHAPTER 2. SOFTWARE CHECK. 2-1. BASE ADDRESS. If you have installed Sony MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions using INSTALL.BAT, the base address is set to 340h in CONFIG.SYS file. Check the switch settings of the host adapter and of CONFIG.SYS file are same. If not, you must set them to correct value and boot again. To avoid conflict between MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions and other peripherals, be aware of the port addresses which are used by all peripherals installed on your computer. When host adapter(s) other than CDB-200, 220, 230 nor 231 is (are) installed on the I/O Channel slot of your computer, you must check the port addresses which are used by them. And if the address, which is set by the /B:xxx in CONFIG.SYS file and by the switch settings of the host adapter for CD-ROM drive, is used by another peripheral, you must change it to different address. Notice again that the base address of CONFIG.SYS file and switch settings of the host adapter must be same. Refer to CUSTOMIZATION of README.DOC file for changing CONFIG.SYS file. page 12 2-2. IRQ CHANNEL. To avoid the conflict between Sony MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions and other peripherals, this driver does not use any IRQ channe, even if you specify an IRQ channel. page 13 The following table is just for reference of the IRQ channel. IRQ # IBM PC/AT IBM PC/XT -------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 TIMER TIMER 1 KEY BOARD KEY BOARD 2 CONTROLLER #2 * RESERVED 3 * SERIAL PORT #2 * SERIAL PORT #2 4 SERIAL PORT #1 SERIAL PORT #1 5 * PARALLEL PORT #2 HARD DISK DRIVE 6 X FLOPPY DISK DRIVE X FLOPPY DISK DRIVE 7 PARALLEL PORT #1 PARALLEL PORT #1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- "*" may be used, "X" can not be used. page 14 2-3. DMA CHANNEL. To avoid the conflict between Sony MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions and other peripherals, it is better not to use any DMA channels. When you have installed Sony MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions using INSTALL.BAT, the default setting of DMA channel is "not used." If you intend to use DMA, you must check which channel(s) is (are) available. To set the DMA channel, you have to specify the DMA channel number by /T:drq in CONFIG.SYS file. And you must also set DMA transfer mode by /M:D in CONFIG.SYS file. Notice that you must set the DIP switches on the host adapter to the number you set in CONFIG.SYS file. Refer to CUSTOMIZATION of README.DOC file. The following table is just for reference. DMA # IBM PC/AT IBM PC/XT -------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 RESERVED D-RAM REFRESH 1 * SDLC * SDLC 2 X FLOPPY DISK DRIVE X FLOPPY DISK DRIVE 3 * RESERVED HARD DISK DRIVE -------------------------------------------------------------------- "*" may be used, "X" can not be used. SDLC stands for Synchronous Data Link Control. page 15 2-4. EXECUTABLE PATH AND SUB-DIRECTORY OF THE DEVICE DRIVER. If you have installed Sony MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions on a sub-directory with- out using ADINST.BAT, you must append the followings to AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Otherwise the error messages appears when boot. 1. The executable path name for MSCDEX.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT file. ****** An example of AUTOEXEC.BAT file ******** PATH = C:\;C:\Sub_Dir MSCDEX /D:MSCD220 2. The sub-directory, on which the device driver exists, in CONFIG.SYS file. ****** An example of CONFIG.SYS file ******** DEVICE=C:\Sub_Dir\SONY_CDU.SYS /D:MSCD220 2-6. DEVICE NAME. The device name both in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files must be same. The device name is specified by "/D:device_name" in the two files. page 16 CHAPTER 3. ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE AND DISK SPACE. When the MS-DOC CD-ROM Extensions does not run well, even if everything is correct, check the environment variable. If the environment variable is insufficient, the following troubles may occur. 1. The message of "Out of environment space" is displayed on the screen. 2. Although an executablle path name is appended in AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and MSCDEX.EXE is copied in the sub-directory you created, the MSCDEX never runs. In this case, a message of "Bad command or file name" is displayed on the screen. To fix the problems, you must chahge the environment variable in CONFIG.SYS file. *** An example of setting the environment variable in CONFIG.SYS file. **** shell = c:\command.com c:\ /p /E:1024 Refer to the manual of your operating system for detail. If available room on the target disk is less than 62 K bytes, the message of "Insufficient disk space" appears on the screen during installation. In this case you can not install Sony MS-DOC CD-ROM Extensions. Make a sufficient room on the target disk. ************************ END OF CHCKLIST.DOC FILE ******************************
