OPTI-CDcache uses a small amount of system memory, can be loaded 'high' with a memory manager, is fully compatible with Microsoft Windows, and can be used transparently with virtually all CD-ROM applications. Before you install OPTI-CDcache, configure your PC to successfully access your CD-ROM drives and CD-ROM applications. The install program will examine various aspects of your configuration and use this information to configure OPTI-CDcache. If you are using the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions, load MSCDEX.EXE prior to the installation. This installation program prepares your computer to run OPTI-CDcache. With this program, you can: o install OPTI-CDcache on this machine, configuring your system to cache CD-ROM data o revise a previous configuration installed with this program You can run the installation program from the distribution diskette or copy it to a public network directory and run it from there. Remember that OPTI-CDcache is licensed for single workstation use. A separate license must be purchased for each workstation that uses the OPTI-CDcache software. You will be asked several questions as the installation progresses. o Whenever an answer is given, accept that answer by pressing the Enter key, or change it by typing in your desired answer. o If a list of options is given, use the Cursor or Tab keys to highlight your selection and then press the Enter key. o You may optionally use the mouse for most operations. o The last step in the installation copies the OPTI-CDcache files to your system and updates your configuration files. A backup of all files will be made before modification. Until this last step, you may cancel at any time by pressing Escape with no alteration of your system. %TITLE% " Specifying Destination Path " The destination path is the drive and directory that will contain the OPTI-CDcache files. If you have a hard disk, the default path that the OPTI-CDcache files will be copied to is C:\CDCACHE. If this machine uses diskettes only, the default path is A:\CDCACHE. Press the Enter key to use the default or type your path selection. Path: %TITLE% " Specifying the Boot Drive " The boot drive contains your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. If you continue this installation, these files may be modified. Backup files will be created before modification, and will have a .BK? extension where ? is a single digit from 1 to 9. If you have a hard disk, the default boot drive where your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files reside is drive C. If this machine uses only diskettes, the default drive is A. Press the Enter key to use the default or type your drive selection. Drive: %TITLE% " Choosing Automatic Startup " A batch file, CACHE.BAT, will be created in the destination directory specified at the beginning of the installation. It contains the commands to load the OPTI-CDcache executable and the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions (if applicable). This batch file may be executed automatically at power-up or later from the MS-DOS command line. Executing CACHE.BAT at power-up requires less user intervention and is recommended for most installations. Deferred execution from the command line is helpful when additional startup control is required. Would you like to start OPTI-CDcache automatically at power-up? %TITLE% " Specifying Extended Memory (XMS) Usage " OPTI-CDcache has detected that your machine is equipped with Extended Memory (XMS) and an Extended Memory Manager (e.g. HIMEM.SYS). You may use all or part of the available XMS memory for CD-ROM data caching. OPTI-CDcache can choose the amount of XMS memory to use for data caching based on the amount of XMS memory that is available, or, you can choose the amount yourself. OPTI-CDcache will choose approximately half of the available XMS memory for caching, up to a maximum of 2 megabytes. Do you wish to specify the amount of XMS for local CD data caching? %TITLE% " Specifying XMS Cache Size " You have chosen to specify the amount of XMS memory to be used by OPTI-CDcache for local CD data caching. The amount of usable XMS in kilobytes (1024 bytes) has been entered as the default value. Experience has shown that applications may benefit from as small as 256 kilobytes of data cache. Using larger amounts of cache memory may improve application performance. Use the cache statistics feature to determine the effectiveness of your choice of cache size. More than 2 MB of XMS is recommended for multi-media applications. Either type a smaller value and press Enter, or accept the default. XMS Cache Size: %TITLE% " Entering Device Name(s) " Please enter the device name(s) used either when you type the MSCDEX line to load the extensions or by your non-MSCDEX device driver (look at the /D: parameter in your CONFIG.SYS). For example, type "/D:MSCD0001" to allow caching for the device represented by this name. The CONFIG.SYS file will be examined to verify that this device name is supported by a device driver. OPTI-CDcache may be configured for use in conjunction with one or more of these drivers to access attached CD-ROM drives. You can add device name(s), one at a time by typing the name. When you have finished, leave the field blank and press the key. Device Name : %TITLE% " Quick Startup (press Enter to proceed) " You may need to reboot your PC before using OPTI-CDcache. If so, you will be asked whether you wish to automatically reboot or if you prefer to defer rebooting until later. Please read the READ.ME file in your destination directory for helpful hints on further improving the performance of CD-ROM access. If you chose to automatically startup OPTI-CDcache, you should be ready to cache CD data after your system boots. Type "CDCACHE /s" at the DOS command prompt at any time to obtain a summary of the activities of the OPTI-CDcache software. If you did not choose to automatically startup OPTI-CDcache, execute CACHE.BAT from the destination directory of the installation. This batch file contains the commands to load the OPTI-CDcache CD-ROM caching software. Alternately, append "CACHE.BAT" to your AUTOEXEC.BAT to automatically start the OPTI-CDcache software after the system is booted. Type "CDCACHE /u" to unload the the OPTI-CDcache software. Type "CDCACHE /?" for a complete summary of the command line options. Press to exit the installation program. %TITLE% " Choosing to Reboot " OPTI-CDcache has been succesfully installed on your system. Your boot files have been modified to support your configuration selections. Backup files of the CONFIG.sys and AUTOEXEC.bat now reside in the destination directory resulting with a .BK1 through .BK9 extension respective of the number of times the install program was run successfully. You may choose to reboot your system now. Alternately, you may wish to examine your boot files prior to rebooting to verify the changes to your configuration.
