About the file : This readme file contains Flash ROM installation procedures when you are need to update the BIOS. You should be able to receive an updating diskette from your dealer or retail store where you purchased the PP6-NB motherboard when you file a defective BIOS complain. ################################################################### # WARNING! # # Flash EPROM provides better upgradeability and a convenient way # # to update sytem BIOS. If your installation # # procedures is not completed or encounter unexpected error(s). # # The system will not boot anymore. # ################################################################### Flash ROM : It is a sure item when you purchased a PP6-NB motherboard from any retail store or dealer(s). The purpose to have a flash ROM installed in the motherboard is to allow user updates any defective BIOS without useing EPROM WRITER MACHINE. How to update the BIOS : 1. Check if you can update the BIOS - turn on your computer and you will see the following message shown on the screen. Award Modular BIOS V4.51PG, An Energy Star Ally Copyright (c) 1984-95, Award Software, Inc. 09/23/1996 For i440FX PCIset Compare the date shown in the above message with the date of the new BIOS file NBxxxxxx.BIN in the diskette. The new BIOS file should be located in the same diskette as this readme file. If the BIOS file( NBxxxxxx.BIN ) date is newer than the date shown in the screen, you can continue the updating procedure. Please do not update your BIOS with any other files or you may encounter unexpected error(s) in your computer system. ** NBxxxxxx.BIN NB -------- a brief mainboard name xx -------- month xx -------- date xx -------- year 2. Turn on your computer and enter the DOS prompt. Please note that you can not use any protect mode application or driver (such as EMM386, QEMM386) when updating BIOS. Comment out those command in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file and reboot your system again. If you are useing MS-DOS 6.0 or later, you can do this by press [F8] function key while the "Staring MS-DOS..." line is on the screen. The MS-DOS will prompt you to confirm each line of the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. The AWDFLASH.EXE file can not work under protected mode. 3. Insert NBxxxxxx.BIN diskette into drive A or B and type : A:\AWDFLASH or B:\AWDFLASH A:\AWDFLASH NBxxxxxx.bin or B:\AWDFLASH NBxxxxxx.bin the Falsh Memory Write Utility will ask for the filename of the new BIOS. Enter "NBxxxxxx.BIN" and press [Enter] key. The utility will automatically save the ROM BIOS code as "BIOS.OLD" in the diskette when the utility give a message "Do You Want To Save BIOS (Y/N)" and press [Y]. The "BIOS.OLD" file is a backup of your original BIOS from the motherboard. The next message will ask "Are you sure to program(Y/N)". If you press the [Y] key. The utility will load the new code into Falsh ROM. ################################################################# # NOTE : # # DO NOT power off computer when updating flash ROM. This step # # may takes about 10 seconds to complete. Repeat step 3 if any # # abnormal symptom is observed. # ################################################################# 4. When completed loading the new BIOS, you must power off or reboot the system, and enter the CMOS Setup Utility before going any further by pressing [DEL] key. In the Setup Utility, choose "LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS" option and respond "Y(es)" to load the hardware default value for proper initialization. If you have not LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS. The mothboard's CMOS value was still the old BIOS. 5. Call your dealer if you have any problem when updating. *********************** END OF README.DOC **************************
