This installation guide describes: o How to update the Windows 95 NETSMC.INF file with the NETSMC.INF file provided on the SuperDisk. o How to use EZStart to copy the driver files for Microsoft Windows 95 from the SuperDisk. o How to install the driver files under Windows 95. Note: This driver supports all 8216 (Ultra), 80xx (Elite), 80xx (PLUS) Series, and 8416 (EtherEZ) ISA and Micro Channel Ethernet adapters. Note: When using SMC's EtherEZ ISA Plug and Play adapter in a system loaded with Windows 95, there is no need to install a driver. It is included with Windows 95 and loads automatically. INSTALLING THE ADAPTER To ensure the correct loading of the SMC 8416 adapter and driver within Windows 95, the following steps should be taken. The driver's network NETSMC.INF file on the SuperDisk must be substituted for the network NETSMC.INF file that is included on your Windows 95 CD. Do these steps before installing your adapter. 1) Start up Windows 95 WITHOUT the SMC adapter installed. 2) a. Click Start. b. Move the mouse pointer to Programs. c. When the Programs subtitles appear, move the mouse pointer to MS-DOS Prompt and click. 3) A DOS box will appear with the cursor in the windows directory. Type CD INF to enter the INF directory. 4) Rename the NETSMC.INF file with the command REN NETSMC.INF NETSMC.SAV. 5) Type exit to leave the DOS box. Click on Start. Click on shutdown. A box with the highlighted message "Shut down the computer?" should appear. Click on yes. Turn off the machine when the message to do so appears. 6) Install the SMC 8416 adapter, attach network cable, and power up the machine. Windows 95 starts to boot up. When the message "Starting Windows 95" appears, hit the F8 key. A startup menu will appear. Choose option 6. COPYING THE DRIVER FILES USING EZSTART 1. Boot the computer to the DOS prompt. 2. Insert the SuperDisk into a floppy disk drive. 3. Change to the floppy drive where the SuperDisk is installed. For example, if the disk is in drive A, type "A:" and press Enter. 4. From the DOS prompt, type "EZStart" (or "EZStart /t" for text mode) and press Enter. 5. Select "Custom" from the EZStart main screen. 6. Select "Drivers/Documents" from the Custom Installation screen. 7. At the Network Drivers and Documentation Selection screen, select the appropriate driver you want to install (make sure the selection you want is highlighted). Then press the Enter key or select "OK". 8. At the Network Drivers and Documentation screen, the default destination directory and a list of files to be copied to the default directory are displayed. To accept the default destination directory select "Copy Files". Otherwise, enter a destination directory at the prompt and select "Copy Files". 9. Follow the prompts to continue the installation. 10. Remove the Superdisk from the floppy disk drive. 11. Select "Exit" to exit EZStart. INSTALLING THE DRIVER FILES The following procedure describes how to install the SMC driver and assumes that Windows 95 is already installed. For information on customizing your installation and Windows desktop, refer to your Windows 95 manual. 1. Double-click on the My Computer icon in the Main window. 2. Double-click on the Contol Panel icon. 3. Select New Device. 4. Click the Next button. 5. Select the "Install a Specific Device" radio button and select Network Adapters from the list. 6. Click the Next button. 7. Click the Have Disk button. 8. Select the SMC adapter you want to install followed by "OK". 9. Follow the rest of the Windows 95 screens instructions.
