Troubleshooting Tips v1.02 Troubleshooting tips for the Intel EtherExpress(TM) 10 ISA LAN Adapter ====================================================================== Overview: - If the adapter can't connect to the network - More troubleshooting tips - Incompatibilities - Testing the adapter IF THE ADAPTER CAN'T CONNECT TO THE NETWORK ------------------------------------------- Make sure the cable is installed properly The network cable must be securely attached at all connections. If the cable is attached but the problem persists, try a different cable. See the Cabling specifications readme files for a list of recommended cables and information on how to install the cabling properly. If you're directly connecting two workstations with TPE cabling (without using a hub), you will need to use a crossover cable. For more information, see the "Specifications and requirements" section of the TPE cabling specifications readme file. Check the LEDs on the adapter The EtherExpress 10 ISA adapter has two diagnostic LEDs on the bracket. These LEDs help indicate if there's a problem with the connector, cable, or hub. The LNK light is on when an adapter using the TPE connector receives a Link pulse from the hub. If the light is off, there might be a bad connector, bad cable, or problem with the hub. For more information, see the "Specifications and requirements" section in the TPE cabling specifications readme file. The ACT light blinks whenever the adapter sees a signal on the cable. If the light stops blinking, either there is no traffic on the network, or there may be a problem with the network. Make sure the adapter is configured correctly (non-Plug and Play only) The adapter must use configuration settings that aren't used by any other device in the computer. Make sure the I/O address and IRQ are not in use. EX10Set can reliably detect most IRQs used in a computer. However, some devices use IRQs in a way these programs can't detect. If you have problems with the computer after installing the adapter, make sure no other device uses the same IRQ as the adapter. Test the adapter Follow the procedures for testing the adapter later in this readme file. Make sure you installed the 10 ISA card last If you are installing more than one card into a computer, make sure you install the Intel EtherExpress 10 ISA adapter card last. See the readme files for your operating system If the information in this file doesn't help you solve your problem, check the readme file for your operating system. MORE TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS ------------------------- This section lists common problems and possible solutions for adapters. General problems ---------------- EX10Set can't find the adapter. - Make sure there's an EtherExpress 10 ISA adapter in this computer. - Turn the computer off, then restart it and run EX10Set again. - Make sure the adapter is seated firmly in the slot. - Try a different slot. - Try a different EtherExpress 10 ISA adapter. - Try the adapter in another model of computer. Diagnostics pass, but the connection fails intermittently. - See the Cabling specifications readme files to make sure the cable you're using meets IEEE specifications. - Make sure the network cable is securely attached. - Try a different cable. The adapter stopped working without apparent cause. - Try a different slot. - The network driver may be corrupt or deleted. Reinstall the driver. - Try a different EtherExpress 10 ISA adapter. - Test the adapter. See the appropriate operating system section of your manual for more information. - Insert the EtherExpress 10 ISA Configuration and Drivers disk into a drive, switch to that drive, type EX10SET /RESTOREEPROM, and press Enter. You'll be prompted for more information to help EX10Set identify your adapter. In Windows* 95 or Windows NT*, you must reboot to DOS before running EX10Set. Network driver fails to connect to the server. - Check the readme files or your NOS manual to make sure you installed the driver correctly. - Make sure the network cable is securely attached and you're using the correct connector type setting. - Check Intel's online services for an updated driver. - Make sure you're using the correct frame type or network protocol. You want to restore the adapter's factory default settings. - Insert the Configuration and Drivers disk into a drive, switch to that drive, type EX10SET /RESTOREEPROM, and press Enter. You'll be prompted for more information to help EX10Set identify your adapter. In Windows 95 or Windows NT, you must reboot to DOS before running EX10Set. No highlight bar shows on a monochrome or plasma screen. - Restart EX10Set by typing either: EX10SET /MONO (and press Enter) or EX10SET /PLASMA (and press Enter) Another board stopped working after you installed the adapter. - Make sure all boards are seated firmly in their slots. - Check for conflicts. Windows 95 and Windows NT problems ---------------------------------- Windows 95 doesn't automatically detect your Intel 10 ISA adapter. - Run EX10Set in MS-DOS* mode and make sure Plug and Play is enabled. If Plug and Play isn't enabled, enable it and restart Windows 95. - If Plug and Play is enabled, but Windows 95 doesn't detect your adapter, try another EtherExpress 10 ISA adapter. Windows NT can't find your Intel 10 ISA adapter. - Reboot to DOS and run EX10Set. Disable Plug and Play on the adapter, set the IRQ and I/O address and then restart Windows NT. INCOMPATIBILITIES ----------------- Computers with multiple cards If you are installing multiple cards into one computer, you must install the Intel EtherExpress 10 ISA last. XT Computer users EtherExpress 10 ISA adapters don't support XT computers (8086s and 8088s). Contact your computer vendor or reseller for a network adapter that supports XT computers. NE2000 adapters You can't run EX10Set when NE2000 drivers are loaded. If you're installing the adapter in a computer with an NE2000 adapter, restart the computer without loading the drivers before running EX10Set. Intel PRO/10 or PRO/10+ ISA adapters in the same computer. If you have an Intel EtherExpress 10 ISA card and an Intel EtherExpress PRO/10 or PRO/10+ adapter installed in the same computer, you can't run EX10Set but you can load drivers. Also, the 10 ISA card must be the last card you install. Windows 95 and Pentium(TM) Pro processors The Intel EtherExpress 10 ISA EX10.VXD driver doesn't work with machines using Pentium Pro processors. TESTING THE ADAPTER =================== DOS and Windows 3.1 ------------------- Intel's diagnostic software lets you test the adapter to see if there are any problems with the adapter hardware or network connection. If you want to test the adapter with a responder on the network, see the next section before continuing. If you're currently running EX10Set, skip to step 3. 1. If this computer already has EtherExpress 10 ISA adapter drivers installed, restart the computer without loading them. For example, if the drivers are loaded from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, edit the file by typing REM in front of each line that loads a driver. 2. Put the Intel Configuration and Drivers disk into a drive, switch to that drive, and at the DOS prompt, type EX10Set and press Enter. 3. From the Main menu, select Test adapter. To test the adapter with a responder on the network EX10Set can test the adapter's network connection more thoroughly if you have a responder on the network while running the tests. 1. Go to a computer that's using an Intel EtherExpress adapter to connect to the network. 2. Run the appropriate configuration or diagnostics program (EX10Set, E100DIAG, or SETUP) for the adapter and set up the adapter as a responder. 3. Return to the computer you want to test. Run EX10Set and select Test adapter from the Main menu. Windows 95, NT 3.5, NT 4.0 Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and follow the steps above. * Third-party trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
