Message-ID: <9307191140.AA13737@blesi.os.is> Hi again! Well.. I've managed to get my GUS to live peacefully with my SB.. If I remember to run SETGUS before using the SB. Unfortunately any other GUS software kills my blaster, so I have to do it over again... I was just wondering.. is there any other program that does the same sort of initializing as SETGUS, that won't require that I press ESC to get out of it? Something suitable for .BAT files :-) (Is this the SBOS load/unload trick?) This is rather important for me, since I can't get SBOS to operate reliably.. my NMI seems to be buggy. Also I'd like to be able to program both cards in their native modes (fun!). I got it to work like this: GUS : 240h, DMA 3 and IRQ 7+11. SB : 220h, DMA 1 and IRQ 5. Replies by E-Mail/Digest are fine for me.. whatever you like. ..Thanx.. P.S. If any gurus out there see something wrong with my DMA/IRQ setup pleeze let me know.. I don't know much about these things, but SETGUS and TEST-SBC give no errors with this config.. ______________________________________________ ___________________ / \ / \ ( "Shee, you guys are so unhip its a wonder your O Bjarni R. Americans like myself will have to endure another three or so week wait while the box becomes FCC certified. The price quoted to me was $40 plus $5 shipping which seems pretty good. You can order it directly from Gravis by calling their sales line 1(800)663-8558. When I asked for a description I was told it has an in, out, and thru plus two joystick ports. I can't remember if it has one midi out or two though (the Mediavision card has two outs but is priced $10-20 more and wasn't designed specifically for the GUS). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1993 15:18:53 +0000 From: Clarke Brunt Subject: Re: GUS and Recording Session Message-ID: <0096FBD0.7AAE21C0.15283@lsl.co.uk> writes: > Has anyone experienced problems with the Midisoft which came with the GUS > 2.06 diskettes? Anyone know > what's wrong with the prog. or is the Midisoft that came with the GUS > 2.06 diskettes is a limited demo version?? I agree that it seems strange that Recording Session doesn't allow choice of MIDI device like WinJammer. The way to select is to change your MIDI Mapper setting to use your desired MIDI device, and make sure that Recording Session is set to use MIDI Mapper. If I remember, Recording Session also allows you to choose to bypass MIDI mapper - in this case I don't know how it chooses from the available devices, unless it just chooses the first one, or has been amended to look for 'GUS Midi Synth'. I don't know why you are getting the wrong patches - admittedly, I don't remember actually saving a .MID from Recording Session, but wouldn't have thought there would be a problem. I don't think that this version has been specifically stripped down for the GUS, but we have heard people complaining about the 'track exceeds 64k' error, and inability to set time sigs with denominator other than 4. Do I remember someone discussing upgrades to 'Recording Studio'? Does anyone at Midisoft read the Digest? If so, I'm sure we wouldn't mind hearing from them. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 93 06:25:50 PDT From: deraud@power.amasd.anatcp.rockwell.com (Robert Lee DeRaud) Subject: Number of voices under Windows Message-ID: <9307191325.AA14798@power.amasd.anatcp.rockwell.com> There have been a fair number of comments about missing notes/voices when playing .mid's with Recording Session. Is this REALLY a Recording Session problem or is it a Windows driver (i.e. Gravis) problem? While debugging some hardware (CD-GUS-amp cabling), I was using the plain ol' Media Player to light off MIDI files...chris3.mid (one of my favorites BTW) lost most of the stuff in the bridge (the Japanese drums and the arpeggios) and generally sounded like shit compared to using playmidi. What was interesting was that some of the 'missing' notes were for patches that could be heard in other portions of the song, so it was NOT a patch loading problem. I've got the number of voices jacked up to maximum (30-32, whatever) and I don't THINK this song uses anything like that many: the bad section in the middle ends up with at most 6-8 note polyphony, mainly drums. What's REALLY wierd is that this effect varies by song, software, phase of the moon, and what brand of beer I'm drinking at the time. Any clues? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 93 11:20:00 +0000 From: FINK_MARTIN/HP2000_13@idacom.hp.com Subject: Speech recognition Message-ID: Hi! Does anybody know about any speech recognition software that will work with GUS. Preferable WINDOWS based. I'm looking for one that will control the WINDOWS environment based on voice commands. I'm also looking for something that would allow me to dictate a letter and import it into WPWIN or even input directly into WPWIN. Any suggestions or comments are welcome.... If there is somebody like that, here's some data for you: Waynes world works. Both demo and full version. Compared to SB or SBOS it's pretty good... ( but the game is probably dumb... didn't tried it... a friend reported it worked and i checked with the demo version and it works too). On megaem: does this sucker work on everybody's machine? Not that i really need mpu emulation when i have the real thing, but, still it hangs at random times and reboot the machine, anytime between the first * from emuset to up to 5 minutes in a game... Only could try Robocop3 and lemmings 2 and it seemed to work, the short time before the machine rebooted... There is a blurb in the docs about 16 MHz bus... i have not tried 8 MHz, but why on earth wouldn't it work when ALL my other software (you name it) work flawlessly with the GUS and the bus at 16 MHz... Spacehulk, does it run with sbos 2.0b10? Electronic Arts is not very bright of not supporting the GUS... On patches, well i'm not yet satisfied with them... still tweaking the drums. I am still looking for a few tr-909 kicks to complement. I'm toying with the idea of doing a drum machine for the remote GUS (thru MPU401). Is there an interest for that? would people be willing to pay for this? As for patchgod, IdMEDIA is starting to be well know in the multimedia consultation business so it may push the release date (still in alpha version). If you have any wish lists, you can still send them to me, but dont hold your breath... Patchgod will be released as shareware, btw. A few days ago, i finally managed to upgrade my PC with a new motherboard (486-33) and found out that SBOS won't work anymore : ,The NMI procedure on this PC is disabled'. Has anybody a hint except exchanging the board ? (Yes, it's a new board and i could complain to the supplier and maybe even make him exchange it...) 2.) Tried out the ,miles' drivers with dune. The music is fantastic (!) but there is a problem : Every time digital sound is played, the currently played tone from the music track drops out. The digital voices don't sound good, i'm noticing crackles and such. As nobody else is complaining (everybody seems quite satisfied with the Miles-drivers!) i'm sure i'm doing something wrong. Any hints appreciated. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1993 01:30:53 -1000 (GMT-10:00) From: Paul Murgatroyd Subject: Re: Ultrasound Daily Digest V4 #47 Message-ID: > From: blevins@Athena.MIT.EDU > Subject: GUS DRAM > > I finally decided to upgrade my GUS memory from 256k to 1Meg. I can't recall the brand though. They only had a T on them...Toshiba maybe?? I bought 8pcs, replacing the original 256K that I got with the board (since it was only 100ns, and I am wary of mixing different speed chips together). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 93 11:16:00 +0000 From: FINK_MARTIN/HP2000_13@idacom.hp.com Subject: What is .arj Message-ID: Hi!
