(first time posting on the digest...gives me the chills :-) A quickie question which is not in the FAQ (I think). How do you get the 669 composer up on EPAS to work..the file is composd13.zip from Renaissance. I got past the initial hurdle of having a clean system ie Dos is low, no memory managers no TSR's, then it gave me the error that I MUST have an SB or SBPro. So fine, I installed SBOS...various versions, 2.04 didn't work but 1.20 did in that the screen disappeared and my system crashed. Has anyone out there got this thing working???????? Any help is greatly appreciated... Dups (who still hasn't received his disks but hopes fervently they won't arrive till AFTER he has done his History paper :-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1993 11:52:34 -1000 (GMT-10:00) From: Paul Murgatroyd Subject: Re: FW: Ultrasound Daily Digest V4 #43 Message-ID: On 19 Jul 1993, zz Paul Murgatroyd wrote: > Date: Wed, 14 Jul 93 11:32:18 -0400 > From: "Momentary language, sexual situations" > Subject: Virtual Leftovers... > Message-ID: <9307141532.AA17970@magick.tay2.dec.com> > > Has anyone tried this demo/intro? If so, does anyone get any sound out of > it??? Yep, and I'll I got was virtual silence, just like you! GUSMOD does work on my system though, as does everything else. My GUS set up is 240,7,7,11,5 If you want to hear the mod, just rename virtual.000 as virtual.mod (so your mod player can see it), and play it to your hearts content. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 1993 21:28:44 -0400 From: KWAN RICHARD SIK YIU Subject: GUS and Midisoft Recording Session Message-ID: <93Jul18.212852edt.4945@skule.ecf.toronto.edu> Has anyone experiencedproblems with the Midisoft which came with the GUS 2.06 diskettes? First, I could not select to output to midi port like winjammer could. Second, I've changed the patches of a midi and saved it, still I could not play the midi in the right patches. Any idea what's wrong with the prog. or is the Midisoft that came with the GUS 2.06 diskettes is a limited demo version?? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 93 14:05:22 -0400 From: blevins@Athena.MIT.EDU Subject: GUS DRAM Message-ID: <9307181805.AA26501@cacciatore> I finally decided to upgrade my GUS memory from 256k to 1Meg. I remember reading that some people had problems with some brands of DRAM. Can those people email me and let me know which Brand/Speed/etc of DRAM to stay away from. Can those people who have had success with memory upgrades let me know what kind of DRAM they got. Any and all replies by Email or on the GUS Digest appreciated. --Matt ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 93 3:16:05 PDT From: Jody Franzen Subject: Power Chord and Recording Session... Message-ID: I haven't received my upgrades via snail mail so I ftp'ed 'em. But these files don't seem to come with Power Chord or Recording Session. Do I have to wait for the disks to come in tha mail. And if so, how can I check t see that I am indeed on the mailing lists for upgrades? Thanks. J. J. Can this compression be used playing compressed patches in realtime? Imagine how much samples you could stuff into the GUS... Bye, Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 1993 14:15:57 -0500 (CDT) From: Siu-fung Lee Subject: Stacks? Message-ID: In the previous digest, Jim Blakely mentioned setting stacks to 9,128 (or something like that). With the newer versions of dos like 5.0, and most newer programs, you do will not need stacks, so 0,0 setting shouldn't cause any problems (hasn't for me, nor any of my friends). The Dos Powertools manual suggests setting it to 0,0 to save a bit of conventional memory (if need be). Why am I even talking about stacks here? I'd personally be afraid to set buffers to a high setting.... I've seen some wierd crashes whenever I set buffers > 40. Of course, I was playing U7 at the time, so I guess it would be okay if one runs dos "friendly" programs. Instead of adding buffers (since it's ineffective anyways), use a cache, and keep buffers low (5 or so). But I guess programs like U7, Windows, etc. would make most users think twice about eating up memory with a cache. Oh and my GUS problem... I wrote to ibm.pc.soundcard about GUS hiss! I'm now pretty sure now that it is a hardware problem, and not an EM problem. In short, my card adds hissing to my sample recording off mic-in and line- in, and the hiss matches the volume changes of the sound that I record! I think it may be something to do with the DAC (too much voltage?), but I dunno anything about circuits, so I dunno. I tried a friend's GUS, and all you get is some hiss from EM, which is negligible when recording loudly. But mine... nooooo! The hiss gets louder when I record louder! Used the same equipment for both soundcards, played with all the software settings.... ___________________________________________________________________________ umlee182@ccu.umanitoba.ca |\ Siu-Fung Lee ____________/|____________/ |_______________ ============------<<<<___________ ___________ __ _ _______ ____ >>>> |__/ \__) | \____/ University of Manitoba, Winnipeg | | Manitoba, CANADA /__| Thesis: Mobile Suit theology - "In Search of Subtitling for Zeta Gundam" ___________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ End of Ultrasound Daily Digest V4 #47 ************************************* To post to tomorrow's digest: To (un)subscribe or get help: To contact a human (last resort): FTP sites: archive.epas.utoronto.ca pub/pc/ultrasound wuarchive.wustl.edu systems/msdos/ultrasound archive.orst.edu pub/packages/gravis FTP mail server: mail-server@nike.rz.uni-konstanz.de Hints: - Get the FAQ from the FTP sites or the request server. - Mail to for info about other GUS related mailing lists (UNIX, OS/2, GUS-MIDI, etc.)
