I've been using vaired versions from 2.04 to the vurrent 2.08 (?) and I've had no problems. In fact, it's one of the best sounding SBOS games I've heard (digitized voices are crystal clear and VERY good). It _may_ be because I'm running music off my Roland (mt-32), but I have run it with SBOS music to see, and had no problems, either. I'm running on 486/50 (not dx2), Diamond Speedstar 24x. Texel 3024. No command line options for SBOS. What kind of Graphics card do you have? How does your system "rate" in the beginning? (I get 85% for the graphics, and 100% for the CD-ROM) Now, as for 3D MIDI file and fp3D, unless you write a custom MIDI layer for the GUS which will load up 3D sounds that you make, you just can't have 3D sounds in a MIDI file. Maybe Gravis will do something like his, but it won't be _too_ great for music. Remember, each 3D sound takes up 6 voices (4 if it's only front and back (no up and down)), which would limit the number of voices you can have. Also, unless someone figures out some special commands (like SYSEX) which would position a 3D sound (x,y,z coordinates, possibly?), then there really isn't a way to do this. Perhaps with a MOD-type format, since those use straight samples (instead of the patch format, which would be harder to implement 3D in)... Not a hope on the DX-7. Afraid to tell you this, but the DX-7 uses FM synthesis. The only keyboard patches you'll be able to ftp that will have anything useful for the GUS are the sampler patches, and even then you'll probably only be able to strip out the raw sample. The most probable thing would be an EPS -> .wav convertor. This is the Ensoniq patch format. Don't ask me what the exact format is though. I only had about half a dozen responses so this is not all encompassing. In particular I don't have any info on the pricing in Perth. I'm sure the prices will drop a little more as the card actually starts to sell, but you have to bite the bullet sometime! I'm buying mine in the next month or so. Hopefully there will be an update to the install program from 2.06L that works even better! Normal Sale New South Wales --------------- Egghead $349.95 $299 Sydney (02) 415 3355 The guy was going to sell me a card he had installed in his machine for their sale price of $299! I'd appreciate any feedback you can give me. I've seen that a sb,gus, and adaptec can work together, but will I be able to throw a net card in there (it was hard enough to get it to work w/out the sound blaster/adaptec.) Yes, I had the very same problem - but was all my own fault. I was messing the BIOS settings on my machine (AMI BIOS) and changed the bus speed from CLOCK/3 to CLOCK/2. I was trying to get a wee bit more speed from my video card. PLAYMIDI then showed the symptoms you described - all or nothing volume bars. I changed the bus speed down again, slapped my wrists, and everything worked fine. Product name is Gravis ULTRASOUND Computer Specs. OPTI chipset AMI BIOS 486dx/33 m/b 8mb RAM SVGA ADAPTER Tseng Labs 400 (15bit colour) Gravis S/w version 1.21 I just got my GUS, which is brought in from the USA by a fren of mine studying there. He got it from Babages at 149.99 US$. The Serial number is K28695 and the Board revision is 2.4. the Following is a run down of the problems encountered. Please help me ! ------------------ as follows... I got my GUS this afternoon, opened it up to find, 1.21 disks, 256kb RAM, HUGE GUS card (compared to the Sbpro2) Opened up documentation, quite dissapointed by it's extreme sparseness... read it and got to work changing the address from 220 to 240. Disabled my Sbpro Joystick port, and plugged in the GUS. turn on the machine, HORRORS !!!! No memory check click, no screen image, one white screen, no boot up, harddisk spins and then stops forever, no seek to drive A. NO NOTHING ! Must be a clash somewhere.... took out my sbpro2 (obvious culprit). happily turned on the switch. HORRORS ! same sceanario ! *heat tumping 'ULTRA' fast* What is wrong ? got the gravis out and turned on machine... works ! minus sbpro2 and GUS, it works.... decide to put in sbpro2 to test... it works ! Change adress of gus to 210, try... cannot work... same sceanario.... change to 230, cannot.. change to 250, cannot... change to 260 ... CANNOT ! (all these without my SBpro inside) Whenever i took out the GUS, my machine boots up !!!! I was expecting the 16bit DMA problem on my OPTI chipset M/b, but this is really ridiculus ! Tried to play around with my AMI BIOS settings, slowed down the bus speed to 1/6, then 1/4, from it's original 1/2.5... no chance ! Changed the memory wait state from 0 to 1 to 2 respectively for all the combinations ! NO CHANCE !! *heart bursting from chest* Scan GUS documentation for such a problem... ZIP !!!! ZERO nothing ! THE CARD CANNOT WORK ! So i ran over to another fren's place... he got no sbpro, no sound card... i put in the GUS...... oops ! Same problem ! Then went to another fren's place... this time it works ! SHOCKED !! All my fren's systems are similar to mine.... OPTI chipset 486DX/33 8MB on board. ISA slots... no VESA. PLEASE SEND ME HELP VIA EMAIL OR FAX (065-4485831) ASAP ! Btw, i haven't mailed my registration card, cos i just got the GUS ! (AND IT CANNOT WORK! )and one more thing... I live in Singapore, somewhere in south east asia ! regards Jerry Koh 28/5/93 ------------------------------ End of Ultrasound Daily Digest V3 #60 ************************************* To post to tomorrow's digest: To (un)subscribe or get help: To contact a human (last resort): FTP sites: archive.epas.utoronto.ca pub/pc/ultrasound wuarchive.wustl.edu systems/msdos/ultrasound Hints: - Get the FAQ from the FTP sites or the request server. - Mail to for info about other GUS related mailing lists (UNIX, OS/2, GUS-MIDI, etc.)
