I plan > on recording external audio input, and therefore a 48KHz sampling > rate is very desirable. But what are you going to play it back on? I mean, unless you've got 48khz recording AND playback I'm not sure I see the point. Actually, to tell you the truth I've never understood the 48kHz rate anyway. 44.1kHz should be enough to capture all audible frequencies, shouldn't it? (Though the neighbourhood cats and dogs might be really impressed!). My feeling is that most microphones and speakers are going to start rolling off pretty fast above the 20kHz mark anyway. The only thing I could think of was that perhaps if you're recording ofF a DAT there's some reason that it's better to be using it's sampling frequency. Though you still need 48kHz playback, otherwise you're still going to have to do the sample rate conversion when you play back the recording. Besides which, you should really transfer the data digitally. Message-ID: <9305280103.AA10981@itchy> I don't have time to track people down if there is a mail bounce (which happens more and more frequently as the number of users and the number of lists and digests goes up). The new policy is that if I receive a bounce from your site, your name comes off the list immediately. Sorry I have to do this. I'd really like to devote more time to support of this digest, the programmer's digest, and all the mailing lists, but I do have to pay rent and buy groceries, and no one here has volunteered to help me out with those yet. :-) (BTW: This includes "vacation" program replies. If you are going on vacation, remove yourself from the list for the time, and then get back on when you come home. Otherwise I'll do it for you, with much less kindness. Grrrr.) If you don't get a digest someday, check the ftp sites to see if there was a digest made that day. (If no one sends messages to the digest, it's not supposed to mail anything out. Of course, it might, if there's a bug. We'll see tonight... no mail has come in to the programmer's digest today.) If there was, then your site might be having mail problems, in which case you've been removed from the list. When the problem is fixed, go ahead and resubscribe. -- Dave ddebry@ debry@ \ DeBry dsd. peruvian. | "We are the Abnormal Mystic Police!" es. cs.utah. | com edu / ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 May 93 23:45:21 -0400 From: "Momentary language, sexual situations" Subject: Re: GUS + Adaptec 1542B + new installation disks Message-ID: <9305280345.AA18499@magick.tay2.dec.com> > Also, another Adaptec+GUS note: GUSMOD as it is shipped on the > the 2.06 disks seems to still suffer from the problem described > in volume 3, issue 18 of the GUS digest, wherein Wayne Hodgen writes: Yup. I Also have an Adaptec 1540B as well as an SB 1.5 and a GUS and I've written to CyberStrike about this a couple times, with no response. If I keep all the MOD files and such off the SCSI disk, it works ok, however, it still hoses the Adaptec so that it cannot complete the scan of the SCSI bus if I reboot. The only thing that will fix it is a Reset. Since the code for GMOD 2.11 has been posted, I'll see if I can find out why, but not knowning 80x86 ASM will most likely make this difficult...:-) DDA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 May 1993 14:54:18 -0400 (EDT) From: ccastge@prism.gatech.edu Subject: Midi card + Ultrasound? Message-ID: <9305271854.AA02008@prism> I've had my Ultrasound now for about 6 months, and do not want to wait any longer for the midi cable box to come out. I've tried a friend's SBPro Midi connector, with my keyboard (a Yamaha PSS-790, I think), and no dice. It kind of worked when the GUS was sending it midi data, but neither Cakewalk, nor the kbmidi player, would respond to keypresses on my keyboard, on any channel. What I'd like to know is, has anybody used a 'generic' midi board, or if such a thing exists, along with the GUS? I've heard that there are cards you can plug into a slot, that allow you to plug in midi cables, and work with whatever soundcard you've got. How much is something like this going to be (U.S.), and where can I get it? Thanks for any info you might have! ccastge@prism.gatech.edu | Why are we here? --Neil Peart a.k.a., Guy Elden Jr. | Because we're here... ------------ Currently being 'frizzle-fried' | Why does it happen? in the CS realm... | Because it happens... I just obtained a SoundBlaster Pro, and I can't seem to get Strike Commander to recognize it. I managed to get Strike Commander working with my ordinary soundblaster, but the same method does not seem to work with the SB Pro. Any help is appeociated greatly. It seems to be only Strike Commander that has problems "finding" the sound board. Everything else I have works flawlessly, making me wonder if perhapd the sound card initialise routine in Strike Commader is a bit buggy. Here is my current sound board config: SB PRO: Base=220H, IRQ=7, DMA=1 GUS : Base=240H, IRQ=11, DMA=7, SB/MIDI IRQ=5 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 May 1993 10:46:35 MST From: "Dave Bakken" Subject: The Treehouse & SBOS Message-ID: <199305271746.AA15939@centennial.cs.arizona.edu> I don't know about Treehouse, but hopefully my experiences with Playroom, its little brother, will help. Playroom works fine with my GUS when run from DOS, although for some reason half of the sounds come from the PC speaker and not the soundcard. (I'm sure this is not a problem with the GUS.) However, the sounds that come over the GUS don't work when I try to fire up Playroom from Windows. It doesn't hang, but the sounds don't come out. When I first got Playroom and my GUS in January it would sometimes hang when fired up from Windows, but that has worked for a long time (I think a new GUS software release fixed it). I saw that they're coming out with a new Playroom version; hopefully this will work better with GUS and Windows. And hopefully they will improve Treehouse for you or you can find a way to make it work. Dave Bakken ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 May 1993 19:14:43 -0400 (EDT) From: "Timothy C. Looking in the FAQ yesterday, I saw that one of the recommended places to get the GUS was Telemart. Now, seeing as how I live in South Africa, (yes, we do have computers down here :-) it is a bit difficult to get hold of a GUS ( at a reasonable price ) locally. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how Telemart's international ordering works. I know they do take international orders, 'cos I saw their ad in the PC Magazine. Unfortunately, a phone call to the States costs a lot from here, otherwise I'd phone them myself. I think that they usually take credit card numbers, but due to local foreign exchange laws, I don't think that I will be able to do it that way. Is there an alternative? And how much will this little lot end up costing me? I see that they are advertising the GUS for about $127-00 and then say that I must add 6% for an international order. Does that include postage? If not, any idea of how much postage is? Thanks a lot.
