Hi everyone,
  I noticed that someone didn't know what arj was.  Basically,
it's another compression package like PKZip. In case anyone wants
the latest version(I think), I uploaded it to epas in the submit
directory as arj230.exe. I checked it for viruses and downloaded
it to see if the epas copy was intact. Just execute arj230 and it
will extract all compressed files inside itself, including
documentation.

This has been a very busy year for both Gravis and Forte.  If you have
been following the UltraSound story over the last few months you will
see what type of impact the UltraSound has had on the sound card market.
I can't remember when any other sound card has created such a stir.
Everything from people who have found the Zen of GUS, to people who
were selling their UltraSound cards out of frustration.  Through it all,
we have listened to you and have worked with you to make the UltraSound
a superior sound card.

What you are about to read is some VERY big developments which have
taken place in the last week.  So sit back, relax, and read on.

UltraSound SDK V2.01 Released (05/21/93)
========================================

 An all new UltraSound SDK has been released and does not require the
 signing of a non-disclosure agreement!  What follows is parts of the
 README file included with the SDK.  At the end of this message you
 will find a list of places where you may find this SDK (GUSDK201.ZIP,
 or GSDK21.ZIP on CompuServe).

 Support
 -------
 Due to the low cost of the UltraSound developers toolkit (free) we do
 not offer much in the way of technical support.  All the documentation,
 source code and libraries are supplied 'as is'.  We do provide a Gravis
 programming message and file area on our BBS and on all the Gravis
 nodes. An Internet programming daily digest is in the works and should
 be setup by the time you read this.  Both Gravis and Forte are over
 worked so it may take us a little while to respond to your mail.
 For the most part mail is replyed to within a few days, at most a week.

 What is Included with this SDK
 ------------------------------
 This SDK includes:

    - Low Level Libraries for Borland C and MicroSoft C in Large, Medium,
      Small and Tiny memory models.  Also Watcom C for 32bit flat mode.
    - Over 130 pages of documentation on disk
    - Register port information
    - 3D Libraries
    - Library source code
    - New version of the Patch Editor
    - Sample programs using both the regular C and 3D libraries
    - Sample 3D sound file (F3D)

  The only program not included but you may require is FP3D.EXE.
  FP3D, Focal Point 3D, sound processor is required to make your own


  3D sound files.  Due to special licensing agreements WE CAN NOT
  FREELY DISTRIBUTE THIS PROGRAM.  Anyone caught doing so may expect
  legal ramifications!

  Everything is included to program and use 3D sound files with the
  Ultrasound except for FP3D.  A sample 3D sound file is even included
  so that you can test your program without ever requiring FP3D.

  You will find an order form called SDKORDER.FRM with the UltraSound SDK.
  Please refer to this for instructions on obtaining FP3D.

UltraSound V2.06L Disk Sets Announcement (05/21/93)

GUS0025.ZIP thru GUS0030.ZIP or GUS25.ZIP thru GUS30.ZIP on CompuServe

Here is what you have all been waiting for.  This is a version of the
final set of disks which are being mailed to all registered users of
version 1.x.  The mail out starts Tuesday May 25th 1993, and is
expected to take a week. (Yes, the disks are finally being duplicated <g>)

                           *** IMPORTANT ****

There are about 8Mb of files.  This roughly translates to 8 hours
of downloading at 2400 baud or 90 minutes at 14400 bps.  Keep this in
mind if you are calling long distance.

You will need to unzip each file to a separate 1.44Mb 3 1/2" disk to
install.  You can NOT simply unzip all the files into a DOS directory
and install them from there.  Each disk was designed to completly fill
a 1.44Mb floppy when uncompressed.  Because ZIP added a few extra bytes
to each file you will NOT be able to copy the .ZIP files to a floppy,
unzip them first.

About the Bonus Software

The mail out will consist of V2.06 which WILL include these disks.  All
future shipments of UltraSound will also include these bonus programs.

What Has Changed From V2.0-V2.5
 ------------------------------

Mostly the install.  If you'll remember, we released V2.02 of the software
to the computer networks in March.  This allowed us to get some valuable
feedback from you on what was wrong or missing.

Quickly, here is what has changed.
  SETGUS - Setgus will not put its LOG file in your UltraSound directory
           instead of your current directory.
  Patchs - A much better Honky Tonk Piano
         - Inst #84 is now Charang
  SBOS   - What can I say
  Windows Install - No longer dies if the user has files set to < 20
                  - Now checks to see if they are running a shell other
                    than progman.exe (eg: Norton Desktop, HP Dashboard etc.)
                  - Makes sure your GUS Windows drivers are in the right
                    place
                  - Fixed major problem if users were upgrading from V1.x
                    of the Windows software.
  DOS Install - Runs setgus BEFORE the install to verify the GUS is
                working correctly
              - Allows you to restore a single or group of files
              - Removes the temporary directory created by Windows
              - Warns the user that STACKER and DOUBLE SPACE may not be
                returning the true drive space remaining.
              - Reads the ULTRADIR and ULTRASND enviro variables
                to determine if this is a new install or an upgrade

UltraSound 3D
=============

There seems to be some confusion out there about UltraSound 3D. UltraSound
3D is NOT a new card.  Every UltraSound shipped from day ONE supports
3D audio.

Why have we not released a public 3D demo yet?  Easy, neither FORTE or
Gravis are games or demos programmers.  We have concentrated on getting the
developer's toolkit out there so that the real game and demo programmers
can write some spectacular software.  As 3D demos become available I will
be posting them on our BBS, Gravis Nodes, CompuServe and Internet.  Please
refer the list provided at the end of this message.

The UltraSound has been getting some VERY good reviews lately.  You may

OS/2 Drivers
============

Many of you have been asking me if Gravis is working on OS/2 drivers.  Here
is a more complete answer.

We have allocated resources for this.  We have attended the one week IBM
OS/2 device driver training course in Boca Raton (sp), know what is
involved, and have all the necessary tools.

We are finishing up some work on our Windows drivers, OS/2 drivers
will follow soon.

The expected length of the project is three months. One thing you may want
to consider is that our new SDK contains all the information that is
required to make your own OS/2 drivers.  You are more than welcome to beat
us to the punch.  I have already heard from some groups who have plans to
write Windows NT, OS/2, and UNIX drivers for the UltraSound.  These groups
aren't associtaed with Gravis but we are more than willing to assist them.
Note, Linux drivers have been written this way.

	Just picked up a MSI local-busmotherboard with a 486DX2-66 onboard
... the problem of course is that the Ultrasound won't play stereo over it.
Mono appears to work OK, but stereo mode cuts out one channel totally, at least
from JMPRO Tracker's perspective, and so does GUS ModPlay. My 386-33 had
no probs with either program - they played just great.
	So, I take it that the problem could be mainly timing.. maybe the
DX2-486, running at 33 onboard, and 66 on-chip could be a prob? Or elseits
just DMA timing, but I've been tweeking those with no luck. Or could it be
that the programs themselves don't adjust for the high speed of the 486-66?
	If anyone has a solution, please send me a BIOS config (its AMI-BIOS)
that would work, or at least come close.

About converting the SB midi kit to work with GUS... I heard the following
must be done:

- Replace 6N136 with 6N138 or 6N139
- Add a 5.6K ohm resistor between pins 5 and 7
- And another between pins 6 and 8

Is this everything that is needed?

If so, a couple of questions..:) 

Where can I find the 6N136? There seems to be no text on the chip..

(And this one's probably a REALLY stupid one..)



Do I connect the pins 5 & 7 (and 6&8) with the resistor or what
does the above mean?

directly onto a music score, then listening to it.  Are there any good
programmes out there which do this and support the Gravis?

  I've received information from John Smith and Chris Yuzik of Gravis
  concerning the 16-bit daughter card.  And, if the information they
  gave me is correct (and I don't have any reason to doubt them), then
  this is *GREAT* news for home studio buffs!

  First of all, the specs:

  * 16-bit stereo
  * Sampling rate up to 48KHz (DAT Quality)!
  * Support for audio data compression
  * List price: $149.95

  Chris claims that the card will be available in June.  From Gravis'
  past record, I'm not holding my breath for a June release, but one can
  always hope :-) :-).  The reason he gave for the schedule slip is that
  Gravis went back and put in data compression support.

  Now for the really juicey part:

  According to John Smith, you can record and playback at the same time
  using two different 16-bit DMA Channels!!  The only catch is that you
  have to get a software package which supports simultaneous playback
  and record.  He suggests trying GoldWave, which is available from the
  Gravis BBS.  I haven't tried GoldWave yet, so I can't comment on its
  functionality, but since the hardware is there all I have to do is
  wait for the software to catch up :-O :-).

Just a bit of news from the Gravis BBS.  It looks like the MIDI adapter  
should be available soon.  Gravis is just waiting for the packaging.   
Apparently it is supposed to be very good.  Daredevil of Renaissance is  
beta testing it and says it's the best he's used.  I think it is a midi  
box with joystick y-connector all in one.

Midpak and Digpak drivers should be available soon.

SBOS 2.08 will be out this weekend which is supposed to fix some digital  
audio problems people are having.

Also quite soon, the new disks will be mailed out including the Midisoft  
and other Windows software.

The SDK info is also going to be available for download as well as  
programming info on the joystick port.

To those who want to know what is a miles driver, just look in your favorite
game directory and look for files like SBDIG.ADV ADLIB.ADV. If you use an hex
editor to look at these files, you will see "Copyright (C) 1991 John MILES".

      So GRAVIS did finally release Miles drivers to support the GUS in native
mode. That means that every game that already uses the .ADV files can now
support the GUS just by dropping the GUSMIDI.ADV and GUSDAC.ADV in the proper
directory and tell the program to use them.

      The big question is: Will the drivers be released on EPAS and when?

                            Finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel..

  This version of gusplay fixes to the problem with some VGA cards and
has also a DOS shell. Any comments to Robert will be forwarded to him but
please include a 'To RA:' in the header. The player has grown to 7Kb....



*ModulePlayer 1.5 for Advanced Gravis UltraSound
Written by Robert Adolfsson (CASCADA) in 1993.

*This little program plays standard amiga modules on the GUS.
It is also enable to play 6 and 8 channels FastTracker modules and
Octacomposer modules.

*The commandline format for GUSPLAY is:

     GUSPLAY <[Path]Filename.Ext> [/nnn]

     Where /nnn is a three digit hexadecimal number which specifies the

Ok, for all you people across the pond who won't get to read PC Format for
a while, here is their review of the GUS:

"The Advanced Gravis Ultrasound is unique because it uses Wave Synthesis
as opposed to FM Synthesis.  Again, it's easy to install; the set-up
software talks to you telling yo what to do.
The majority of the demo MIDI tracks are incredible; connect the card up
to a hi-fi, crank up the volume, and listen to a faithfully reproduced
church organ pump out a few bars from Toccata or Fugue in D minor.  It's
Sound Blaster and AdLib compatible using the included drivers.  Because it
uses Wave Synthesis, Gravis claims the sounds produced by Sound Blaster
and AdLib cards will also be improved.  However, some music tends to lose
atmosphere because of the difference between FM synthesis and the patches
the GUS uses to replace the FM sounds.
As supplied the card is capable of 8-bit samples with a variable rate from
2kHz to 44.1kHz, which are very clear.  If you want 16-bit samples you
need to purchase the optional 16-bit Stereo Recording kit (#TBA, Zye
Technology)
There's the usual input and output connectors and MIDI/joystick interface.
 For anyone interested in using CD-ROM drives, a daughterboard can be
purchased (again, from Zye Technology), which supports a variety of CD-ROM
drives and SCSI devices.
192 MIDI patches (instruments) are supplied along with various music and
sample players and drivers for Microsoft Windows, and a utility for
merging animation (.FLI format) and sound (.SND format) files.  USS8, a
sample recorder and editing package, is also included.  The card comes
with 256K of memory, expandable to 1Mb.  This is used for storing the MIDI
patches which contain the wave data for the various instruments.

This was the highest score given in the test.  Second place went to the
Roland SCC1 with 79%, which PCF described as "..an expensive and limited
alternative to the Gravis Ultrasound"!

The SBPro 16 got 77%, the PAS 16 got 75%.

Pretty good review i reckon, although it looks like they read most of it
off the box.  Don't know whether i've just broken any copyright laws but i
thought you'd like to read the whole thing!

On a totally different subject, has anyone found Cubase 1.0 for Windows 
to run very slowly?  I tried playing a few .mids on it, but all but the
simplest ones went at about 2/3 normal speed.  I'm using a 386/40 BTW.

	I've tried to keep the FAQ from mentioning names of places to
buy stuff.  There's a lot of concern on the net that it stays on
reasonably non-commercial kind of place.  I can justify talking about
Gravis because we're dealing in tech info about something they
created.  It's harder to justify talking about a middleman who sells
the GUS or the DRAM for it -- no tech stuff, and they didn't even make
the thing.  (Of course, this gets more complex when you realize Forte
made the GUS, not Gravis... I'm glad I'm not a business major.  Blech.)

	If I'm just paranoid and this is not something people really
care about, let me know and I'll put some more names in the FAQ.

	I'd like to put all this into the GUS FAQ, as a lot of people
have asked about using the GUS for writing music, and there doesn't
seem to be a good source of info for it (until now... thanks, Chris!).

	This a problem for anyone?

Hi,

I have been reading this digest for some time now and the more I read about the
GUS, the more I want one. It seems however that my ship has just come in. I
have a friend who is going to be in the USA for about two weeks starting from
Monday, May 24. He has agreed to purchase a GUS for me. My problem is this - he
doesn't have the time to go around trying to find a GUS at a reasonable price.
I believe the recommended retail price is about $200 but I have read that
people can usually get it for no more than about $150, some even as low as
$130. My quection come plea is this: Where, in the following places, could I
lay my hands on a GUS for under $150? Would the stores be willing to honour
guarantees if I mailed the GUS back to them from overseas? My friend will be 
in the following cities:  Washington DC; Atlanta GA; Denver CO; Vail CO; New 
York NY; Boston MA and San Francisco. If any of you know of any stores in these
places that could fulfill my requirements, PLEASE could you e-mail me ASAP as I
need to tell this guy where to go before he leaves on Sunday. Any information 
would be greatly appreciated,

Audio Interface Libraries (AIL) - MIDPAK/DIGPAK

The following was a blurb on the AIL interface given to me about a week ago.

The Audio Interface Libraries (AIL), (we know them as "Miles" Drivers) are
a set of interface drivers which enable software developers (mainly game
developers) to intergrate sound capabilities into their programs.  Once a
developer has integrated his program into the AIL drivers the application
will virtually work with all sound cards on the market.  The AIL's provide
support for MIDI as well as the Digital Sound interface of an audio card.
These library drivers allow the developers to use UltraSound's wavetable
synthesizer and allow them to utilize the UltraSound's digital interface
to play 8 or 16 bit audio in either mono or stereo mode.

Advanced Gravis & FORTE have recently designed and released to Audio
Solutions Inc. the AIL routines for the UltraSound card which provide the
mechanism for developers to easily intergrate with, and use UltraSound's
features.  Developers who have the AIL's can get the driver updates and
intergrate their programs into the UltraSound.  The AIL updates will also
be available through Advaced Gravis BBS.  Developers who do not have these
AIL can get them from Audio Solution Inc.

Developers who want to take full advantage of UltraSound's advanced features;
and do not want to pay Audio Solution Inc. license fees, Advanced Gravis
and FORTE have a stand alone driver as well.  These drivers use a Terminate
and Stay Resident (TSR) utility called UltraMID.  Developers utilizing
this TSR are able to do digital playback at 8 or 16 bit up to 44.1kHz
sample rate.  Also, this allows programmers to use all of the UltraSound's
32 digital voices as well as the superior wavetable synthesizer.

These drivers are another level of support for the UltraSound card
developers.  Audio Solution's AIL's provide a means for programmers to
easily design software for many sound cards using only one driver while
Advanced Gravis/FORTE's stand alone TSR allows developers to take
advantage of UltraSound's more advanced features.
