Message-ID: <9304232258.AA18777@chekov.usc.edu> OK, I've seen several people(including myself) that have had problems getting Comanche to work in a doublespaced drive.... Well, thanks to a post a week or so ago, I've now got everything working fine! The problem is that Comanche doesn't allow emm386(or whatever...) so you're stuck with the 640 k limit. With DOS, himem, dblspace(44k!), and SBOS all taking their chunk of memory, Comanche doesn't have enough left to include digitized sounds. (The easiest way to tell if you have this problemi s to start up a mission.... if you don't hear "All systems functional" as soon as the mission starts, then you've got the problem.) The fix: A neat little program that gives you access to upper memory without the aid of emm386. The program gets loaded before himem, so you can even put himem in upper memory! Anyway, I put himem, dos, and dblspace all high, and Comanche is back to its full glory! The important lines from my config are below: device=c:\umb_drvr.sys /c=09 devicehigh=c:\dos\himem.sys devicehigh=c:\dos\dblspace ....( forgot the stuff here...) I load SBOS manually(low) and end up with ~580 k left.... Note: The /c switch tells the driver what chipset you have..... I have the bad Opti chipset, and 09 works fine with it. I've just spent a half hour hunting through wuarchive to figure out where I found this little gem (I've forgotten the location and the name of the guy that first told the digest about it (sorry!) ) I did find it in: wuarchive.wustl.edu (mirrors3/archive.umich.edu/msdos/util/system) "umbdr522.zip" [ Ed. Note: I just dl'ed this from wuarchive and uploaded it to archive.epas in the ultrasound/submit directory. - Dave ] So, give it a try... looks like it'll solve a lot of problems I've read about. But my guess this is like fishing you gotta keep dropin the line in to get a bite. Once again if anyone has heard anything regarding new patches tell me. By the way Computer Gaming World in their latest issue said that Accolade has posted a bug fix for there Star Control II game. Bug fix 1.02 or some thing like that. >Hey what is the deal is the only game patch available for Commanche >Maximum Overkill? If so, is there a patch in the works. >Also if there are all of these patches available why aren't they on the >Internet? Message-ID: ReprintFrom: comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard Perusing the GUS faq, I didn't see the answers to these questions: 1) Can one insert multiple 16bit recording daughter boards for multichannel, direct-to-disk recording? If not, will this be possible in the future? Might it require WindowsNT's multithreading capability? Is compression handled on the recording board? How much is the daughter board? How does the future look for multi-track direct-to-disk digital recording using GUS++ (that is GUS +multiple daughter boards). 2) Might not a daughter board which receives digital inputs from an external digitizer be a good idea? Sample/digitize near the source to take full advantage of digital, avoid noise problems surrounding PC? Then maybe multiple tracks could also be handled by extra external units (multiplex on digital input). 3) How about WindowsNT support? -- Marc J. Byrd - byrd@rice.edu | United We Stand. Message-ID: ReprintFrom: comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard Oh yeah, forgot another couple of questions: 4) I saw a Borland Pascal 7.0 unit which gives some programming control. How about a (MSWindows) DLL and the associated documentation? How about a TPU which interfaces this DLL? 5) What processing power, if any does the GUS have onboard. Does playback bog down the rest of the system? Does it have onboard DSP like the Turtle beach (my guess is no for $150-$200!). -- Marc J. Byrd - byrd@rice.edu | United We Stand. Liao Subject: Strike Commander and SBOS Message-ID: <199304240203.AA13992@aerospace.aero.org> Amazingly, Strike Commander works fine with SBOS (at least on my system, a 486sx/33 with 8megs RAM and MSDOS-5, QEMM 6.02, etc.etc.etc) However, I tried Strike Commander at Egghead, and I did notice one horribly wrong sound effect. The vulcan gun on SBOS sounds like this horibly high- pitched whine...worse yet it sounds like it's clipping (too loud for the GF1.) The real noise (on a genuine SB) is a noise that I can only describe as a repeating drum. It sounds decent, but I liked the gun noise in Jetfighter II more. Are their any digital SFX in the game? The only I can find are in the intro. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1993 23:03:56 GMT From: bbs.rainman@tsoft.net (George Loo) Subject: Top Mod Update 4/22/93 Message-ID: <0kkF3B5w165w@tsoft.net> ReprintFrom: comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard New list has some minor changes from the older one, but is pretty much the same except for a switch in the top 2 mods. *-------------------------------------------------------------*---------* | Top Mods List | 4/21/93 | *-------------------------------------------------------------*---------* Vot Mod Name Filename Composer/Group Comment/FTP ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6 Beyond Music beyond.mod Captain/Image ? 6 Space debris spacedeb.mod Captain/Image ? 5 AxelF axelf.mod ? ? 4 Boesendorfer boesendo.mod Romeo Knight "Wicked Sensation" 3 12th Warrior 12warrio.mod Dr. Awesome ? 3 Approach approach.mod ? ? 3 I Like Chopin chopin.mod ? ? 3 Klisjepa klisjepa.mod ? ? 3 Xmas pudding mix xmas.mod U4ia ? 2 Andante andante.mod Dr. Awesome ? 2 Big in Japan biginjap.mod ? ? 2 Dungeonquest dungeon.mod ? ? 2 Mandelforce mandlfrc.mod ? ? 2 Popcorn popcorn.mod Captain/Image ? 2 SpaceX8 spacex8.mod Infinity/Codeb. ? 2 Starwars.remix starwars.mod Captain/Image ? 2 U Fat Bastard ufatbast.mod U4ia ? 2 Unveiled unveiled.mod Watchman&Trixal ? 2 Worlds War worldwar.mod NHP ? 1 -> B A T T E R Y <- ok5.mod ? ? 1 2 2.mod ? ? 1 6Beat 6beat.mod ? ? 1 Acid Age acidage.mod ? ? 1 Adeline adeline.mod ? ? 1 Age of Time ageoftim.mod DEZ ? 1 Alive alive.mod ? ? 1 Almost blubros1.mod ? ? 1 Amegas amegas.mod ? ? 1 Antares1 antares1.mod K.
