***************************************************************************** * INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS * ***************************************************************************** There are two ways to install the Viking driver. The first method is to go through a full Windows 3.1 installation into a new directory. The second method is for those users that have already installed Windows 3.1 on to their system. This involves running the program "SETUP.EXE", which is in the Windows directory. We recommend performing a full Windows 3.1 installation because it avoids some anomolies (e.g. the text under the icons is set to an incorrect size*) that occur with the shorter, second method. Given below are the steps for both methods. Network users please see "Installation Notes" in this document. OPTION 1 -- FULL INSTALLATION ============================= 1. Start the SETUP program contained on the Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disk #1. 2. When prompted, select "Custom Setup", rather than "Express Setup". 3. When asked, enter in the desired directory to install Windows. Please note that for proper installation, this should be a new directory. 4. At the menu which lists the system configuration options, highlight the "Display:" component. Press ENTER. 5. A list of alternate displays will be shown. Scroll to the very last entry, "Other...". Press ENTER. 6. Insert the NVS Viking Windows 3.1 driver disk into the floppy drive. Press ENTER. 7. Highlight the entry for the appropriate Viking monitor configuration. Press ENTER. 8. Continue with the remainder of the Microsoft Windows 3.1 Setup Program. OPTION 2 -- RUNNING "SETUP.EXE" FROM THE WINDOWS DIRECTORY ========================================================== 1. Change to the directory in which you installed Windows (e.g. C:\>WINDOWS). 2. Run SETUP.EXE, the stand-alone DOS version contained in the Windows directory, not the Windows version in the Main group with the Program Manager. 3. At the menu which shows System Information, highlight the"Display:" component. Press ENTER. 4. A list of alternate displays will be shown. Scroll to the very last entry, "Other...". Press ENTER. 5. Insert the NVS Viking Windows 3.1 driver disk into the floppy drive. Press ENTER. 6. Highlight the entry for the appropriate Viking monitor configuration. Press ENTER. 7. After selecting the Viking monitor configuration, the SETUP program will return to the System Information menu. If the desired configuration is shown, then accept the configuration. The SETUP program will then proceed to install the Viking driver into Windows. 8. When complete, SETUP will return to DOS. Windows can then be started. *See "INSTALLATION NOTES" in this document. ***************************************************************************** * INSTALLATION NOTES * ***************************************************************************** RUNNING SETUP WITH "/N" ======================= It may be necessary for network users to run the Microsoft SETUP.EXE program with the /N option. There appears to be a problem when running SETUP with the /N option and selecting the Custom installation method. Apparently SETUP cannot locate the Viking driver files on the floppy disk even though they are there. The solution is to copy the contents of the Viking driver files, in their expanded form, into the user's local Windows SYSTEM subdirectory. The local area can either reside on the network or on the user's local hard drive. The SETUP program will be able to successfully locate the Viking files in the user's area. To copy and expand the contents of the Viking driver disk into the desired directory, perform the operations below: 1. Locate the EXPAND.EXE program from the Windows 3.1 disks. 2. Once the EXPAND program has been located and is on the path, enter the command shown below to perform the expansion and copying of the Viking files from the floppy drive to the desired directory. A:\>EXPAND *.* d: The d: represents the destination drive and directory. 3. Perform the steps of either Option 1 or Option 2 described in "Installation Instructions" on the reverse side of this page. In the step where the location of the Viking driver files are to be specified, use the drive and directory entered in step #2 above. ADJUSTING ICON TEXT SIZE ======================== To adjust the size of the text underneath the icons, the WIN.INI file must be edited. In the section "[desktop]" within the WIN.INI file, add the line "IconTitleSize=n", where "n" denotes the point size of the text. An example is shown below which specifies the icon text to be 10 point. [desktop] IconTitleSize=10
