Sun's original README that comes with the quantum program is included below. The file "quantum" in this directory is already extracted from the original mail message and uudecoded. You should transfer it in binary mode and start at step 5. Note that there are two dates in the output, the one of concern is the one in parantheses. DETERMINATION OF MANUFACTURING DATE CODE OF QUANTUM 105SS DISK DRIVE ===================================================================== Enclosed is a uuencoded copy of a test program called "quantum". This program can be used to extract the Manufacturing date code of the Quantum 105S disk drives. The following is a procedure to operate the program IF THE SYSTEM IS RUNNING SUNOS 4.1.1. Assuming 4.1.1 is running, 1) Save the mail file and create a backup copy of the same. 2) Under vi editor, delete the writeup till and including the "cut here "line 3) Save this file as quantum.u 4) uudecode quantum.u 5) Become superuser and ensure that the "quantum" file is executable. Typically this file will have 24576 bytes (under ls -l ). 6)Type quantum /dev/rsd0a to check drive 0 quantum /dev/rsd1a to check drive 1,etc The output format of the program is as follows : QUANTUM P105SS 910-10-94A.1 08/31/89 serial number: 010040384 (10/04/1990, 0384) The date 10/04/1990 in the above example is the manufacturing date.If this date falls between 04/01/1989 and 12/31/1989,then drive is suspect.
