Whats this car worth

Postby Eddie » 29 Aug 2007 20:40

Bottom Line. What is the most you would pay for this car. U.S. dollars please. It has rust/corrosion ALL along the lower rear flanks/quarters. ALL along the lower rockers. Trunk floor is rotted in some places. It's an original 318 powered 2 bbl. automatic,(I'm sure of) and 8 3/4 I think. Original owner still owns it, but wants to sell although he is in no big hurry. He also has the original flat hood. The "bank estimates or blue book publications" states 12,000 to 14,000, but whats it "really worth" :?:

Eddie, I think the 12' to 14' sounds ok. But not, if all the rockers etc. are rusted through. Do you like to buy it ?

Eddie, That sounds high for one with that much rust. I am going to try to add a spreadsheet with the money that has been spent the past 4 year on my 73. I would hate to have more than 25K in a restored 318 car at this time. These expenses are low for someone that would have to pay for the labor to have it done. I am lucky that both my son and step son work in body shops and have been a lot of help to me.

I'd say it's high too. Thing is - it doesn't matter if there's a bit of rust or a lot of rust as it needs to be replaced to be right. I've learned to visualize the car without the parts I'm going to replace. I quickly see what I'm buying and I have an easier time comparing to other vehicles. Visualize the car with cut off quarters, removed rockers, cut out trunk etc. That's what your buying.

I think the biggest mistake most people make is paying more for a car that ends up with all new panels anyways. I know, because I did it. Well actually, I've passed by cars that would have fit my resto needs. I really didn't need to find a car in the condition I was looking for.

Anyways, just keep that in mind.

The car seems too expensive for sure, as you could buy one restored for another 8-10 thous with a more powerful engine to boot.

I have to agree with Dale. Everyone knows it takes alot of money to restore these cars and with that in mind, how much would a perfect 73 318 2bbl car be worth. If I were looking at that car I would pay no more than 6000. It's the wrong year with the wrong motor. When i bought my 72, it was much cleaner, matching numbers 340 car, automatic with A/C and only paid 7200. I wish the the 72 - 74 group would bring more but for right now, they just don't.

Thanks JJ, Brant, Dale, David, If I can get him to accept around 6k then yes JJ I would buy it. It's definitely a '25 ft.' car. When you really examine it, it shows it's hand. It has some serious corrosion issues for sure. The problem is in his eyes it's still "new".
