Progress pics of 1970 Shaker rebuild

Postby 123rmp » 15 Jan 2013 21:39

Had posted pics earlier of my roof replacement in this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=9788&view=unread#unread

Painted the car over the last couple weeks. I decided to put on a red bumblebee stripe. I think it turned out good. Here are some pics.

Looks real nice. 8)

As you probably know, the factory did the stripe the other way around. Painted the bee stripe colour on first, then masked the stripe off, then painted the body colour on. :D

Here is a photo of my mates '70 R/T Charger that I had at my place for a week while I tuned it for him.

Re the order of painting, yes I know the factory order. Considered doing it that way but the other way round was easier and my car is long, long from factory correct. My car is for me not the show judges. It started life as a 73 Rallye 318 Auto with dark silver paint and side strobe stripe and now looks like a 70 and has 408 stroked 360, shaker and 4 speed.

I keep it all Mopar and looking like it came from factory but I do cut corners.

More pics later.

Also, that 70 Charger is pretty too, looks to be same color. I used the W1 white and E5 red, looks like same colors.

I call it "The Great White Whale" for it's size and the way it handles.

It was a very expensive "top quality" restoration and also has an owner fitted six pack which never really worked until I got my hands on it.

I think the bodywork alone cost $50K. Two years on and there are a few small signs of rust bubbles in one of two spots. I think if I had paid that sort of money for bodywork I would have expected it to last a bit longer.

My brother and I do all our own bodywork, so if we don't count our labor cost we get it for almost free, although the paint itself this time cost almost $500. We do all the owrk ourselves. It's therapy, but cheaper than a psychologist or whatever. Although it helps my sanity, it does increase the chances of my needing a divorce lawyer.
