I am going to replace the cheap trunk seal gasket and would like opinions on which one is best to go with. I don't want to get stuck with another cheap version.

I used a Steele one, fitted perfect and looked good compared to others I've seen on restos over here

Do you have the actual part number you ordered from Steele? Did it come with any adhesive or should I just use the 3m stuff I will be sealing the windshield with?

I've removed the gasket and it's very flimsy. Obviously, the gasket needs to be able to fit over the lip and maintain it's shape, especially standing upward.
I would like something more rigid, so any ideas would help.

It should be pretty firm if it's new and fit nice straight away.
I just used regular weather seal adhesive in a tube

It just glues next to the lip...it doesn't clip onto it.

Some seals are very thick and the trunk lid won't close after installation. You may have to use some blocks of wood and some clamps to compress the seal. Let it sit that way for a few days and the lid should close.

Anyone got any photos? Does the "Y" section sit on the lip with the adhesive applied to secure it? The one I have is all rolled over and isn't sitting right at all. It feels cheap.

The long side gets glued to the car. The Y or open section goes toward the outside. Use the spring type clothes pins to hold the seal inplace until the glue dries.

The seal sits on the outside of the lip.

There are a bunch of different seal styles used throughout the years. Try doing a google search. THere's got to be a closeup of the seal out there somewhere.

I've done some searching and can't find anything "close-up". So, you are saying the open end (Y-side) faces outward, right? The long side lays flat around the trunk rim.
Does the seam go on top or on the bottom of the lid? (Near the rear window or near the latch?)

The seam goes on the bottom. Center it as much as possible with the trunk latch. If you got the seal that looks like a Y laying on its side then the taller part goes to the outside.

I finally got the trunk done and the seal installed. Thanks for the tips on how to install it. I went with the spatter grey paint as I liked the look better than undercoating and it's more durable.

I had to leave my car with a local garage for a couple of days for some welding, and they left it outside in the rain... the result was a good couple of inches of rainwater in the trunk! Think I need one of those seals....

I got one of those from Turnip on our MMA board Andy, it came in a week or so, fitted perfect and wasn't expensive

Thanks Ade, I'll get onto him. Btw it doesn't help when a previous owner fills the trunk drop-offs with expanding foam....

Mopars rust along the bottom edge of the rear window and front windshield. Most water gets in because of that.

Yeah that's dead right! On fact I drove my car for two years and it never got water in the trunk even without a seal!...... nearly got overcome by exhaust fumes tho

Here is a tip for you. When you weld in new metal along the bottom of the rear window opening, just do a bit at a time. If you cut out the whole length (or god forbid the whole edge of the opening all around) the window opening will pop out of shape badly.

Because of the curves I just cut out and welded 6 inches at a time. I just used angle iron from B&Q.
