Help with paint code

Postby redgum78 » 25 Jul 2011 10:24

My car is a FY1 top banana. Trouble is I went into my local auto paint supplier the other day and he was not able to match the FY1 code with anything?
I gather FY1 is a Dodge code not a paint manufacture's code?

Does anyone know of a current paint code that would be the same?

Thanks

Danny

The Chrysler code for this paint is AY1FY1

Ditzler Code is 2211.

One of those should help but to be honest if he couldn't find it with just the FY1 code you may want to think of trying somewhere else.....

I wish I'd painted my car Top Banana but I could'nt afford to at the time and so my brother painted it Ford daytona Yellow, quite wrong I know but I never have any issues matching it. My car was originally yellow tho', can't tell if it was Top Banana or some plain Yellow available in '72.......................... :?:

If it was Yellow it was Y1 mate. Also known as Lemon Twist.

I went to a couple of paint suppliers today. The first one was not able to help with any of the paint codes. The second one couldn't help with FY1, 2211 or AY1FY1 but he had Y1 listed as Chrysler Lemon Twist for 1971.
I also found this site http://www.plumcrazychallenger.com/High ... Colors.htm which has FY1 as Top Banana for Dodge and Lemon Twist for Plymouth.
So It looks to me like FY1 and Y1 are the same and it was called Top Banana when on a Dodge and Lemon Twist if it was a Plymouth.

Have I got this right?

As per my body guy, "Right on dude!" The whole rear end of my car was repainted to match the FY1, by my auto body guy. He couldn't find FY1, either. Check out my post's in my "New Quarter Panel" post, right below yours. Matches perfect. Hopefully it will stay that way as, the year's progress. :D

The first letter in the code (F) is just the year code for that paint as they did sometimes change the colour slightly from year to year. Y1 is the actual colour code and yes Dodge and Plymouth (and usually the Chrysler brand too) used different names for the same colours.

:s017: Thanks Dave. That makes a bit more sense to me now as to why they didn't have FY1 on their system.
They mixed up a little sample of Y1 for me today and it looks good.
Hopfully I might get a bit of color on the old girl in the next month or so.

Danny
They may have to tweek the color, a bit. Keep checking with them. My color is great but, under certain light, I can tell the difference. Nobody else can but, I'm told, I'm very anel about the car. Imagine that! I'm sure it's because, I know what has been changed. :)

Thanks Pat. From the sample he mixed up it looks good. I am going to be spraying the complete car so if it is a shade or 2 away from 100% correct it wont matter a great deal.
I was hoping to get a bit more prep work done this week but I am currently in a dentiest waiting room 300km from my home. My wife is getting a root canal on a tooth. $2700au (almost 3000 US) for 1 tooth! Paint might be on hold for a little while!
I can't believe how much they charge :s005: .

When all done, yours will be even nicer. Mine is just patched, for now. Yours will be completely restored! The main restoration on mine happened fifteen year's ago.

Actually the first letter is the year the paint code was introduced. In this case F= 1970. So FY1 is FY1 no matter what year. So you have to be careful when just using the 2 digit code. If you ask for B5 paint, do you mean EB5, GB5, or KB5. They are different.

There was no difference between the brands for the same paint code, other than the marketing names. So Dodge FY1 is the same as Plymouth FY1, they just have different names. Also, Dodge just called in Banana, not Top Banana. Some later corporate documents do refer to it as Top Banana, but if you look at the brochures and the Color & Trim Selector it is just called Banana.

In addition, FY1 was not a super bright yellow. It was kind of muted compared to the yellows we see today. If you use bc/cc it will of course appear brighter than the original enamel.

Yes! That's what FY1 or, Y1 was. A good paint guy will sort it out. They did with mine. My car got painted with some show car's, in 1996. Those were 1970 model's. We're not talking "Viper Yellow" here. My guy had do some mixing, to make it match. Only a band-Aid, for now. Will look perfect, for years! :D
