Fuel Cap / Gas Cap / Petrol Cap

Postby Russ » 03 Feb 2011 7:15

Covering all geographically specific lingo in the subject heading

I have an original Flip-top fitted, but just picked myself up the standard screw-in type (for 70 Challenger). Just trying to find out whether it's an original or reproduction. All the images I can find of either still seem to differ slightly to the one I have.

I was trying to find a NOS part but could only find chrome versions, and they were demanding at least $150us. Grabbed a used original passenger side mirror on eBay, and noticed this from the same seller for $20, so I snatched it as well. It wasn't advertised as original, but wasn't advertised as repro either.

I was thinking that the part number & Pentastar logo might make it an original, but wasn't sure if recent repro's also imitated part numbers to keep the concourse crowd happy.

It's in unused/unpainted condition, and was cheaper than buying a repro from YearOne, so I'm happy either way - but the part numbers & Pentastar have made me curious.

Any help from the forum guru's would be appreciated!

Cheers

I read somewhere that the original factory ones were in primer like that so that they could be painted body colour.
Any replacements bought over the counter at the parts desk were chrome so they wouldn't have to be painted to match the car.

Our '70 has a painted cap but its packed in the back of a storage unit and I can't get to it right now :( otherwise I'd take a pic.
Bought a flip-top but wife said no to it. I'll just put it on my Ramcharger.

I've never looked at the back of a 1970 version but I would imagine that it is different than other years. 1970 is the only year that used a vented gas cap.(if the car didn't come with California emissions) All other years used a sealed cap. There could be differences in the sealed caps as well.

Thanks Adrian! :s017:

It looks like it is an original cap as the repro's I come across all seem to have no numbers on them.

Still trying to figure out the screw in plug though. Most seem to be like yours, but still have the same part # (3404511) as mine.

Yet there are others with the plug like mine that have a different part # (3404657).

To be honest Russ, its the first time I ever really looked. I do know my cap is original though, but I can see a difference in the length of the tangs or ears that lock in to the filler neck.

Yes but an original cap off what? It does not look right to me. I am sure the finger grip on the Challenger
version didn't stick up like that. It sould have a concave shape to it.

Adrian's looks right to me.

It doesn't stick up. Part of what you see there is the residue from the sticker-label the seller had on it. Gives it the illusion that it is raised - but it's not the case.

Here is a pic of my 1970 Ca emmision cap (right) and what I believe is repo base version (left). Bought it as a backup on ebay also. Found it doesn't not even fit the filler neck though. :x

Thanks Jon.

It looks the same as mine, and I think you're right. What I'm thinkin is the cap itself is original, whilst the screw on plate with the gasket & filler plug is either a reproduction piece, or off something else.

Havn't tried the fit as yet. It's in getting painted now.

I'll see if I can get to the storage unit this weekend to get some pics of ours. Its original too as the car has been in the wife's family since '74. Don't know if they've got the ice cleared out yet though in the storage area.

Anyone know where to get a replacement base for the 70 emmision cap. If you notice in the picture I have a tear in the gasket. It doesn't leak so far but eventually I will come apart I fear.

Hope i'm not outa line here but why would you prefer this cap to the flip cap Rallye / RT style ? I love the flip caps, i think they give the car a real tough muscle look. The other caps look a bit ordinary to me, but just my opinion!! My Rallye has a lockable inner cap with the flip top over it: function + looks

I'm just too cheap and lazy to change it from orig. :)

After reasearching a bit I found that Dales Cuda Shop sells the 70 emmision type repops (in primer)for around $29. They said the base is not available separately though. Oh well, the cap section would make another nice wall ornament.

I am ordinary.

I don't like flash. Sh*t ... I don't even wear t-shirts with logo's on them - ever.

I'm not a fan of excess and prefer things clean & streamlined. Flip-top caps are just a little gaudy for my tastes. They're more of a novelty item that I just couldn't care for.

Thanks for the reply Russ ! That's why the world is interesting, we are all different. And as we say here, "Fair 'nuff". I'm sort of the opposite except like you i never wear T shirts with stupid slogans and i absolutely detest car stickers. However i love factory options that suit and enhance the car and set it apart( eg passenger mirrors, fuel caps, chrome trim, bumper over-riders, wings etc) but people can easily overdo that. I don't like radio, so both my Chal's have the radio removed and the aerial hole panelled up. I also don't like air cond due to the weight and clutter. So it seems we also have a few things in common thinking.

Gents, I know this is an old thread, but...

Does anyone know if a 70 RT would come with a painted cap.
Wouldn't the Rally flip cap be a standard?

Something doesn't seem right about a car Im looking at.
Thoughts?

Thanks for any info.
Best,

The standard cap would be painted. The flip cap was an option.
