Trim on the top of the doors?

PostPosted: 01 Jan 2011 2:13

Hello again,

The doors on my car have about 6 or so holes along the top of them. I am thinking this is to mount a trim of some sort? There was none on the car when I got it. Any info would be great.

Thanks again

Danny

All 1970 SE-Challengers have a 7-piece chrome trim set. I guess that the holes are there to attach the door trim.

I have those parts in a safe place,

I am willing to part with them, since I need gran coupe trim and it is different,

I think it is being reproduced , not sure where

I bought some nos parts from a guy parting out his chally se, I have had them for 15 years or so and they are wrapped and in a safe place,and look new, If you are interested let me know I can see you are in Aus. so shipping will be a little costly , but it depends on how bad you want them :wink2:

Thanks for that info Christer, the doors on my car must have come off an SE then.
Thanks for the offer Drew, I guess I will fill the holes rather than fit the SE trim on a none SE car.

Cheers

You didn't have to have the SE model to get this trim. It was standard on the SE yes, but you could have it on any Challenger model as option package A63.

That wide front edge trim was 1971 only. Check out the dealer brochures scanned and posted in the "VIN/Option Codes etc" section.

So for 71 they had an option A46,(challenger molding group)and A78(formal roof package) I cant see the door molding,

also I think this is a very rare car since it has a shaker hood with the A46 and the A78 options,interesting :)

This car is also a 383 car :shock: rare indeed

Is the fender tag still on your car?

Unfortunately no. When I brought the car it wasn't on it, the owner prior to me thought he knew where/who had it and would be able to get it for me. So far nothing has happened. That was almost 2 years ago and I have long since stopped holding my breath.
Maybe it or the broadcast sheet will turn up one day :|
I send him a message every 6 months or so asking about, he may suprise me yet.

I have compared the Facts and features manuals and this is what I got:

1971: Challenger molding group A46 (Accessory group - Available in group only)
* Belt molding
* Frontstone shield molding
* Hood rear and fender molding

The 1972 Facts and features manual does not say anything about this, so I assume that it wasn't available that year (and the years after).

To summarize this:
1970: Available as part of the Challenger molding group A63
1971: Available as part of the Challenger molding group A46
1972-1974: Not available.

Did I get it right or wrong, Dave? :wink:

How does the chrome attach to the top of the quarters? Should there be holes in the top of the quarters to attach the trim or was that just on the doors? If the quarters had holes in them, are any there now?

How do you know the doors are replacements? Are they a different color than the rest of the car? I'd look for signs of origonal paint on the doors...maybe they are origonal to the car.

What else was included in that molding group? You can look for signs of those other pieces to figure out if your car came with that option. For instance, how was the trim attached to the back of the hood and fenders? Did it just clip on or did they use screws? If they were screwed on, look for the screw holes on the underside of the hood exc...

Another option is to contact Barry Washington to see if he has any info on the car. You may get lucky and find a copy of your broadcast sheet and/or fender tag. You can check out his site and type in your VIN to see if he has anything on your car.

Hey Burdar,

yeh I am still not 100% sure myself about the doors or if it is an A63 option. My car was banana yellow when I got it and I was told that it was the orginal color. I completly stripped the car to get it media blasted and from everything I could see there was no sign of any other color on either doors or body. One front fender did have some orange paint under it.

The main reason I am thinking it is not an A63 is because there are no sign of holes for a trim to mount on top of the rear quarters where the trim line continues from the trim on top of the door.
According to the scan from Dave in the"VIN/Option Codes etc" section A63 is the following group;
Belt mouldings-mine has holes in the doors only
Front splash pan scoop molding-No
Cowl molding-not sure what to look for here??
Rear astrotone painted applique-Mine was yellow
So I am thinking not A63
I registered my car with Barry about a year ago. So far no luck :(

Thanks

Dan

I found this pic on the net. It is said to be of a 1970 R/T-SE Challenger. You can see (barely) two clips below the quarter glass. That should explain it, or?

(You can see more pic's of this specific car if you follow this link: http://www.chooseyouritem.com/classics/ ... RT.SE.html , you switch photos by clicking on the text named "1970 Dodge Challenger RT/SE for sale")

hey dan if your car is supposed to have the belt line mouldings you will have corresponding holes on the tops of the rear 1/4s also

:) Thanks guys for all the pictures. This convinces me that my car shouldn't have the moulding due to the lack of holes in the quarter near the small window. I will fill the holes with the mig.

Cheers
