Trunk extensions

Postby redgum78 » 01 Jan 2011 1:45

Happy new year everyone.
I am currently doing the metal work at the trunk and fender area of my 70 challenger and am wondering what occupies the space between the trunk extensions and the fender skins. My car had nothing here and as a result there was all kinds of junk from wheel nuts to nails stuck between the two pieces of metal. Is there a small metal panel that fits in here to close off the area??

Thanks

Danny

Don't think anything goes over that gap, which is stupid cos all the dust, dirt and anything in-between drops in there and can easy block the drain holes at the bottom of the inner rear qtr extensions :?

The only thing covering it is the trunk mat and that falls well short of the task.

Trunk mat only hey. Thats not the best of designs, as Adrian says all the crap blocks up the drain holes promoting rust. I might try make false panels to fit under the mat.

Thanks

I plan to do that by getting my expert wife to make a heavy carpet/mat that has an upstand around 3 sides. She says she can tailor the top edges to match the profile of the underside of the rear qtr panels and the back of the wheelhouses. She did an excellent job of my car mats which she machined "Challenger" in bright yellow stitching with a matching border onto heavy black carpet :D

So you plan to use two carpets -one for the left side of the trunk and one for the right side?

No mate, I posted that picture of a drivers side front floormat to show what style it would be. The carpet will match the trunk floorpan pattern up to the edge where the extensions drop away, where Carol said she could easy stitch the material at 90deg to make an upstand and then trim that to match the profile of the top of the rear qtr panel, wheelwells and the rear seat division. It will look a little like a dog bed before it goes in place, does'nt have to have rigid sides, just self supporting. Should look nice and neat

I asked myself if that was the case. Yes, now I understand.
