Engine Bay Paint Colors

Postby cv70chall » 09 Aug 2010 14:49

What are the actual color names for the following:

Engine Block (1970 .318)
Heads
Wiper Motor Housing
Fan Motor Housing
Power Steering Pump
Brake Booster/ Master Cylinder/ Calipers & Caliper Brackets

Before we get to the motor, I want to be sure we have the correct colors to do this job- one that keeps getting longer and longer- done right.

Thanks all!

The engine was painted once it was all assembled so the block and heads are the same color. How correct are you wanting to make your project? If you are going for a completely stock look, the exhaust manifolds, coolant bypass hose and possibly the fuel pump should be installed prior to paint.

The wiper motor isn't painted. The main motor housing is plated "zinc dichromate". That is the yellow/gold plating. I sent mine to Jules in Cananda. It's not cheap but it comes back looking perfect.

In 1970 the blower motor housing was NOT painted either. It was zinc plated. Again, Jules does rebuilt these too. If you are more of a DYI'er, you can rebuild the motor yourself and send out the motor housing halves to be replated. Later on, the factory started spraying the motors black. That was probably sometime in 72 but I don't know for sure.

The power steering pump should be black. I'm not sure what % of gloss it should have but Krylon "Rust Tough" semi-gloss black looks really good. I think it is probably the closest thing you are going to find in a spray can.

In 1970, the brake booster, master cyinder(including the cover) were assembled and then sprayed gloss black. Again, I'm not sure what % of gloss is correct. Starting in 71, the boosters/ MC covers were plated in zinc dichromate. The master cylinders were left natural and rusted quickly.

The calipers and brackets would have been left bare....just like the upper contol arms.
