Painted or Chromed Bumpers?

Postby cv70chall » 27 Jun 2009 18:17

I'm in a quandry over the bumpers on my 70. The last guy painted them to match the car- and they resemble the urethane ones, which look pretty neat.
If I were to go chrome, there would be alot of work or I would have to replace them.

Any Votes people?

Chrome is from a past era. Around the 50's thru early 70's i believe. It has certain type of "style" in my opinion,

Yes, i'd agree with Jon, go the chrome. Unfortunately, even the chrome platers these days (at least down here) are not putting out the quality of teh original bumpers. Even the colour is not the same. You really have to pay heaps to get it to look like it did when it left the factory. Same as everythng nowdays, gone to the dogs, unless you got big bucks.

HEres a pic of a 71 Rt clone with painted bumpers. It looks ok, but doesn't really light my fire in a huge way. I admit though, that the black top part helps save them, it was a nice touch from Dodge.

Unless you are using urethane bumpers, I would chrome them. The urethane bumpers didn't have any visable bumper bolts. The studs were welded to the core. A painted bumper with visable carriage bolt heads wouldn't look right.

Now you COULD take the time to weld up all the holes in the bumper and install studs on the back side but that would be a lot of work. My vote is for chrome.

To be honest, when you look at the original chrome it is not that great anyway.

I fitted a reproduction bumper to the rear of my car years ago and it has already lasted longer then the original did.

Yah, factory chrome wasn't very good. There is a big difference in "factory" and "show" chrome. You get what you pay for with chrome I'm told. I'm not looking forward to getting mine done.$$$$

There is a guy building a 70 4-door /6 Valient for OE judging this year at the Mopar Nationals. He posted some pics of the origonal bumper and it didn't look good. I think the car has less than 20,000 origonal miles on it. That bumper is going right back on the car once the inside is cleaned up a little.

I also vote, "CHROME!" AMD, Auto Metal Direct, has perfect reproduction's, with a perfect fit. I got mine for, around $500.00. Front and rear. Triple plated. Finest repop's, anywhere. They're on ebay right now or, google AMD. Good outfit!

My vote is chrome. As the owner of a new Challenger, there is zero chrome on it and I miss the chrome.

Guys, there is alot of them old Challys with chromed bumpers, no worry :D One old Chally with painted bumpers, still looks like an old chally from a past era, with or without chrome.. But chrome is always chrome & it never hurts with nice bling! :lol2:
