Up next, a decent paint job.

I had the pleasure of using my trailer 2 weekends this summer.
Next summer I hope to enjoy it more.....It does indeed turn the Chally from a "day cruiser" into a "weekender".

Best comment so far ; " What does he want with that, it can't be opened"
....this comment was made by a Sweede of course .....

In case anyone wondered,...it took aboat 60 kg of bondo to complete the rusted dummy......the front realy does not really mate well with the rear...
I'm glad I decided to go for glassfibre moulding.

Hey that turned out a lot better than I thought it would to be completely honest. I am actually very impressed! 8)

I think, considering you are only using it as a lift-up cover for what is basically a stock trailer, it might have been better to assemble the steel/bondo shell and then to use that to make a mould so you could reproduce it in fibreglass.

You might then be able to reproduce more "to order" in different model year versions. It would be a lot lighter too.

Just a thought.

Looks great!
Using this as a cover over a somewhat standard trailer, that would be awesome. A nice way to bring tools, and race wheels to a track.
Any idea what it would weigh in fiberglass?

Hello all.
The steel dummy was used to make a mold only, and is scrapped.
The mould was fairly complicated to make,...5 pieces, and very heavy.

So,....I could make many more trailers if I wanted to...... but I don't have plans for that.......the mould is safely stored away.....

The rear of the trailer is -70 model,...but I think you could fit 71 tail lamps if you wanted....

The frame was made from 70x70 mm square tube 3mm thick, and weighs ca 65 kg + 10% added zink...

The axle having the exact width to match the rims+trailer + brake activation mechanism were both purchased with a Brake certificate to satisfy the authorethies in order to get it registered.....I guess ca 60 kg with rims...

Shell weigth depends on how much glassfiber you use..... etc....
Mine is MASSIVE,...abit overkill......hence the total net weigth of 400 kg.

My hopes are to put a paintjob on it over the winter, to match the car....

Very nice!!! I love it!!!

Now I don't feel so alone any more. :)

Johannes, they made you put brakes on that? But no safety chains? Over here it is the opposite. I didn't need brakes, but had to have the safety chains. I know mine has to weigh a lot more as well.

Breaks and safety chain...

Postby johannes » 24 Sep 2010 20:27

Hello P1.
Thanks for the feedback.

Your rigth, not many mucle car are towing trailers around...
But then again,.....not many use their Chally as the family car for camping trips either.....

Maybe some are un aware of the possibilities awailable for making a hidden hitch?.....
Maybe they are looking for the right trailer ?

Hmmmm, If I were living in the states, with all the chevys and fords wrecks available,...I would have made them into something similar to your design......

The reasons for the design being as it is .............are...

In Norway there is a max speed limit of 60 km/hr (ca 37 miles/hr) for any trailer exceeding 300 kg (ca 600 lbs) UNLESS it is equipped with brakes...

As for the safety chain,...on my trailer this is a relatively thin wire coated with red plastic which is connected to the brake system, thus will engage the brake if it gets pulled...(standard style over here)

Just out of curiosity,...what is the mass of you trailer ?
Come to think of it, .....more pictures of your trailer please....from all angles...and "action shots"....
Any particular comment from spectators you would like to share with us ?

Yes, I agree. Not many seem to want to tow anything with cars like these. Or they don't know about any hitch options. The factory did offer a hitch for them. I have seen a few on e-bay. They just don't seem very strong though. So I made my hitch to bolt up to the frame structure of the car. It is much stronger that way.

I have not had a chance to weigh mine yet. If I had to guess, I would say around 800-1000 lbs. The inspectors don't care over here as long as it is under 2000 lbs. If a trailer is less than 2000 lbs. no brakes are needed. But those dang safety chains better be on it. And the lights hooked up.

Comments about the trailer are wild. Some just jaw drop, some just got to meet who ever built it. I hear stuff like "cool trailer", "thats different", "love it", stuff like that. The kids just love it too, I let them sit in it and get pictures taken in it. I have had people run out of buildings as I drove by to get a picture. I am still getting use to all the attention it brings. I'm sure yours will get some of the same.

I'll thow in a few pics I've found on the net....
It appears evident that the car needs a re-spray to match the finnish of the trailer...
Trailer is now also bright white inside....no pics of that,...sorry...

Thanks for watching.
