74 and Flip Top Fuel Cap

Hi Guys,

Sorry if this has been covered but I couldn't find anything in the archives.

I have a 74 Challenger Rallye 360 and a used 70/71 flip top fuel cap in nice condition that I'd like to install. Aftermarket flip top cap posts say they will fit but I don't see how, unless I need a different filler tube and/or body modification around fill area. It looks like screwing the cap on as is to the outside will sit it out way too far, and inside cap gasket won't be anywhere near the filler tube to seal it.

Thanks, Any and all help appreciated.

You still need to run a gas cap under the flip top.

Heh, yeah, I stared at my flip-top cap and filler neck for hours. "How the f*&!????" This site saves me from my own stupidity more times than I'd like to think about.

Hey thanks Tom. Stupid me thinking that inner seal on the flip top was supposed to go into the filler tube. What he heck is it for then?

E-body flip caps don't have a seal on the inside of the lid at all so you need a small diameter inner cap.

Charger caps (and some early barracuda flip caps) have a spring mounted seal so you don't need an inner cap on these.

If your quarter panel has been replaced at any time there will be a good chance the flip cap will not fit correctly due to the recessed cap area not being correct on most replacement panels.
