'New' trunk or underbody coating

Postby Eddie » 16 Sep 2008 16:14

I am getting ready to prep and paint a truck bed with a nitro-cellulose based paint thats "permanent" and very resilient to water, corrosion, chemicals, comes in many different colours, contains 46% solids, is textured, can be glossed or cleared or matte flat. It can be removed with strong chemicals or mechanical sanding with coarse grit,(36). It would have some interesting uses in the trunk, inner body floorpans, underside, even underhood for racers or those not desiring an oem finish, I have seen it used in Hot Rods, trucks, cars, equipment, fiberglass, ect, what 'drew' me to it was the hard 'ceramic' like finish and the ability to resist corrosion. It covers everything, welds, cuts, gouges, any smaller imperfections! If interested I will show the whole procedure of application in a truck bed from start to finish. Let me know

It's very hard like ceramic. It's not gummy like most urethanes. It comes in a variety of colours, but is heavily textured and coarse. perfect for trunks, undercarriages, certain suspension parts ect,,

Hey Eddie, it looks good. I would be interested as my car was undercoated at the factory. Do you think this would replicate the factory undercoating look? How is it applied? Is it expensive?

I think it would replicate the underbody coating pretty close! It comes in a variety of "black colours". The flat black with Zo-Pol clear coat would mimic the tar based undercoating and not retain the 'stickiness' that the Detroit based stuff is/was. It's 28.00/Quart (I used 144.00 in paint supplies, 2 quarts of primer, 2 quarts of basecoat, 1 quart of clear coat and 1 quart activator),requires a Pot style Pressure gun. It got mine from Harbor Freight Tools for 14.99. The ridiculous inaccuracy of the guns construction is an advantage here. The Harbor freight gun states a 1.8 mm tip, but it's actually larger than 2mm which is the required size! It worked perfect! It sprays at 50-60 psi so the overspray is enormous! I had to cover the whole vehicle and the overspray would surely get all over any shop so I did it outside instead of our schools paintbooth. I wouldnt use a Sata paint gun anyways Bob, this stuff is nasty and very difficult to remove once dried, VERY!
