bumblebee stripes question

Postby charliek » 14 May 2008 6:12

I was wondering if the black bumblebee stripes are flat black or gloss? I know the stripes were available in other colors that I could not see as being anything but glossy. I have seen them both ways on cars, flat and glossy but dont know which is correct. Any insight would be appreciated

Bee stripe Gloss. It was painted on.

All the other stripes were Matt decals.

The bumble bee stripes were painted on first, then masked and the rest of the car was painted.

Now if the stripe is the same color as the car, who knows what it should be like?

You couldn't get a black bee stripe on a black car for that reason.

You could get the white stripe on a white car because the two whites were slightly different.

I disagree. I have a fender tag for a TX9/V9X 340 car.

I do not know what you mean by "the two whites were slightly different". What other white is there for a 1970 Challenger but EW1? As you know, I'd desperately like to know as my car is coded EW1/V9W.

I have also seen an FC7/V9C car. And an EK2/V9K one.

Factory Documentation shows the following Bumble Bee stripe colors available for the 1970 Challenger:

V9B - Blue
V9C - Plum Carzy
V9E - Red
V9F - Green
V9J - Sublime
V9K - Go-Mango
V9L - Beige
V9T - Tan
V9V - Hemi Orange
V9W - White
V9X - Black
V9Y - Top Banana

How do we explain the cars I've listed above? It's a mystery to me.

All the cars I have seen with these combinations were relatively early builds. One possible explanation is that they were ordered thinking the stripes were tape (as with all other bumble bee stripes). My car is a May build though. And even if ordered in error, what did the factory do?

One final item ...

There is a car coded for V9R stripes. Galen thinks this would be an ER6 colored stripe, though I'm not convinced that it's not just a typo.

If you look at the correct white used on Challengers it is more of a cream colour.
But the white they used for the stripe was "whiter" if you know what I mean.

Actually you can see what I mean when you look at this photo of a EW1/V9W Challenger.

As far as I know the two blacks were the same though so if you have any photos of the black/black combo I would love to see them. :s017:

If the two blacks are indeed the same then I cannot believe that anyone working for Chrysler would be stupid enough to mask the car and then paint over with the same color.

So either the tag is a mistake (should have been stripe delete) OR the two blacks are slightly different (in which case I would love to see them!).

That's actually my car you've posted. The stripe was applied at some time in its life over the EW1, so I don't know what is correct. I don't know who or when it was done, nor what color was used for the stripe.

My EW1/V9W car and the FC7/V9C and EK2/V9K cars I mentioned are coded the same on the fender tag and the broadcast sheet.

The black car info was something Galen passed on to me. It currently has red stripes.

There was another TX9/V9X car on eBay recently but the tag is not legit.

Galen believes that when a car like this occurs that they use satin paint on the stripe, but I don't know what he bases this on.

I will redirect you to a link at another site where you can read more about these cars in a post I made.

Here's pics of that car from eBay. It was just restored. I tried to get info from him about what the car looked like before the resto but was unsuccessful. But remember the tag was not legit so I don't even know if it's the original color.

I was trying to find it on here but couldn't remember who had posted it!

Well anything and everything is possible with Chrysler and you can never say never when it comes to options. All we can do is generalise because there are always exceptions to the rules.

I do know Chrysler had several Whites in its paint pallet. For example in 1971 you could have W1 (White) or W3 (Bright White) on a Dodge.

Chrysler tended to do matt black as decals even on large areas which would have been easier to do as paint.

Did they use satin black in any part of their cars? It would be odd to keep a satin black just for the one person that might want a black bee stripe on a black car.
I like the effect though. I think it looks cool.

The AAR and T/A hoods were Organasol. Which is flat, but very rough.

Dave, I am pretty sure you could call the black paint used for the headlight surrounds satin black. But, I'm not a paint guy.

The headlight bezels? They were not painted at the assembly plant. They came already painted.

When they sprayed the radiator support, cowl and sill flange they used matt black. So they would have had that to use I guess.
