Front T/A Chin Spoiler's

Postby patrick » 06 May 2008 3:17

I've decided to go with some new T/A, style Chin spoiler's for my 73' Rallye. They are new from Year One. When I asked if they came with mounting bracket's, the guy said, I would have to use my original one's. I told him that the car did not originally come with front spoiler's. Question: Is this small project as easy as just drilling a few hole's, and getting some nut's and bolt's at the hardware store? :D Or is this going to be another can of worm's project for Pat? Thank's Guy's! :wink2:

There are no mounting brackets. They bolt directly to the front valance.

Thank's, Barry. You would definately know. Do you have a diagram, or measurement's, showing exactly where these are mounted? Or am I stuck with picture's and guess work? Thank's. Any input would be most appreciated. :D

If you look at photos of T/As you will see there is some variation in the way the spoilers are mounted.

They were added by dealers not the factory (the cars were delivered to the dealers with the spoilers in the trunk) and did come with instructions but most look as if they were just thrown on any old way.

Putting the more sharply angled ends to the outside seems to look best.

Rather than just little bolts and washers I used 10mm bolts and a strip of ally bar inside each to re-enforce them.

patrick, having the go wing at the back. you got to have the chin spoilers at the front. its like peanut butter and jelly in a sandwich together.
you will be pleased at the look. i think they offered both together anyways as a factory option. i attached some photos of my chin spoilers and go wing. it really brings the black and yellow together nicely for my colour.

I ask myself if the same thinking is valid for the rear spoiler (T/A spoiler) too? :?

I agree. I also prefer to see them as a pair - both front and rear spoiler. (...and not just one of them.)

I went with the TA spoiler myself and painted it the body color. I taped them both on too see which one I liked better and sent the other back.

Looks Awesome, Tom! Thank's for the pic's. Can't wait to get mine. Just two bolt's per spoiler? Look's like a very clean and easy installation. Thank's, Pat

I used 2 but I guess you could use more if you like. I like the idea of the steel reinforcement plate inside the spoiler though. They are only fiberglass. But then again if You hit something with them they are going to be destroyed anyways.LOL

Tom

Thanks btw!

Got the new Chin Spoiler's yesterday. Mine are fiberglass also. After rechecking my YearOne catalog, I see where I missed it. I was looking for the original style plastic. I was off by one number, but saved about $40.00 Buck's. Tom, I was thinking about what you were saying about one hit and they are toast anyway. Then thinking about how my wife park's. I'm gonna' try the fiberglass first, then go from there. They are a bit ruff. I've been sanding and priming, sanding and priming. More work than I expected but, coming out very nice! I'll paint tomorrow or Friday. Put them on this weekend. I'll post the end result's.

Installed the chin spoiler's today after work. They look great! At the end of installation, I noticed a small gap on the driver's side. Being fiberglass, I didn't want to torque them too much. I was able to snugg them up a little more. Now, it's perfection. :D Except, when I was finished with the last bolt, The box end wrench I was using, slipped off the valence, and hit me directly in the mouth. :s006: Yep, you guessed it, broken front, upper "I" teeth. one shattered, one chipped. :s005: I'll take a damn picture, later. Now, I'm looking for a dentist. :bonk:

I wish I would have taken it on the chin. That way, I wouldn't have to get bondo filler on my two front teeth. :rage: Stupid wrench, couldn't have hit me, any more perfect, to do what it did. :rage: It was a one in a Million shot, for that wrench. At least, I was wearing "Eye Protection". :s023: Here are some Pic's on the T/A Spoiler's, on my Rallye. My tongue can't leave that part of my mouth alone. It's searching for a tooth, that's only half there.

Where are those fender washers? On the outside bolts, or on the outside of the fender?

The big fender washer's are on the outside of the spoiler's. They are 1&3/4". Lot's of support. But, like Tom say's. They will be destroyed if you hit anything with them, anyway.

Looks to me as if you mounted those spoilers in exactly the right position.

They look great. :s017:

Thank's for your comment's, Gentlemen. I'm going in to see the dentist next Tuesday, for a cleaning and assessment. My front teeth will fixed, soon after that. :D Your right, Dylan. Everyone is noticing the spoiler's, not the teeth. Thank's, Dave. Your comment actually made me feel less, "grumpy", with my little project. And thank you, Eddie, for the advice. Only, I wished I knew about the toothless "Hoosiers", before I got my new smile. :s022: :bonk:
Talk to you soon, Pat
