Flippin' Gas Cap!

I purchased a flip top gas cap and trim ring for my '70 Challenger from Year One. I have verified that I did receive their correct cap for a '70; however, I'm not sure it is going to fit. The screw pattern is slightly off, but that's not the problem. Just holding it against the body, it appears that the depth of the cap mounts will be an issue. Even allowing for the screw heads, I think the cap and ring will not fit flush against the body - maybe 1/8" or more. In other words, it looks like the indention of the body is too shallow for the unit. I know the cap itself stands out from the body, but the mounts seem too long.
I hate to break out the old screws (which are painted over) if it is not going to work. What do you think?

They did not fit "flush". They do stick out a bit on original quarters.

Are you talking about the lower ring not fitting flush? (The one that has the screws) As alaskan TA said, the gas cap will stick out a bit, and you will be able to see the lower ring, looking dead on from the side.

Will it stick out more than this?
I have heard that replacement quarters have an issue. I'm not sure if you have them though.

I know the flip lid will stick out with some of the black mounting area showing. The problem is the trim ring will not fit flush. Year One said to put some caulk around it. Can't see that being right.

Is it just loose? You can bend the tabs down so that it fits tight.(trim)

OK, that helps.
Once you mount the ring & cap together & torque the screws down it self-adjusts. (compresses to meet the body panel)

So I am correct in reading that you will have to screw into the quarter panel to mount this?
I have a 1970 that came with the standard screw off cap and I am replacing it with the flip-top.
I want to be sure!

You use the existing screws that are holding the filler tube to the inside of the quarter panel.
