Trunk floor replacement

Has anyone bought a one piece trunk floor yet? I cannot decide whether to buy a one or two piece floor. The two piece is obviously easier to install, but I've heard some negative comments about the quality and accuracy of these reproduction panels. One nice thing about the one piece is the presence of the access/fuel filler holes noticeably absent on the two piece. The downside is that it is nearly double the cost and more expensive to ship. I would end up simply cutting the one piece in half to get it to fit up anyway, so I'm leaning towards the cheaper route. Besides, my car is not that valuable and needs a lot of work. Any comments would help.

I just dropped in a two-piece trunk floor from Year One. I had some minor problems with fit around the wheelwells, but I believe this was a problem with my car, not the trunk pieces, because the old trunk pieces fit wrong also. Some minor trimming was needed, and it's important to note that the new pieces do not extend under the rear taillight panel like the original 1 pc. My trunk was rusted out there as well, so I had to weld in a piece of angle to make up for the missing metal. Some clamps on the flanges of the edges held the pieces tight to the sides and made for a great fit to weld to. I'll see if I can post some pictures.

Question: Is it possible to mount a one-piece-floor in a complete body (that is, isn´t it required that you cut loose another panel at the same time so that you can get the floor pan in?) Just wondering...

If the one piece gives you the back lip as well, I imagine it could get interesting trying to wrangle it in, but I suppose it's doable.

At the factory the trunk floor is installed before the quarter panels.

You cannot install the full panel with the quarters in place.

NCChallenger was talking about buying a full panel and cutting it in half to install as it may be better than the two half panels available.

It feels like you get much a higher quality product for the $90 difference (not taking shipping in account). If you can afford the one-piece panel, then I would go for that.

My car also has rust underneath the tail panel where it meets the lip (trunk lip) so I was hoping the new piece had this lip. However, MOPAR1972 brings up an interesting point that fitting the piece underneath the tail panel may get tricky. After removing what appears to be the factory seam sealer, there was some bad rust between the wheel wells and trunk extensions. The more I pull this car apart, the more repairs I find........ :cry:

The best deal I found thus far has been on Ebay for $300 plus $55 for shipping. The vendor who has it for $269 charges $97 for shipping to a business in North Carolina, $162 to a home address! I'm leaning towards the one piece at this point, but may find in the end that the two piece would have worked as good for less money :?:

Giving it another thought: You are NOT building a show car or a top-notch resto or something, right? You just want a clean, nice-looking driver. Go ahead and buy the two-piece floor then. Nobody will ever look there anyway.The whole thing is not visible so you can save a bunch of $$$ there.

Here's a link that I threw together quickly. I'll have to put together something better to post pictures of the trunk replacement once underway. Currently, I just have the gas tank removed and plan on cutting the floor out soon. I'm also having the rallye cluster/switch panel restored by Auto Instruments http://www.autoinstruments.com/ I'll post some pics of the before and after shots as well.

Hey again. I see that autoinstruments is doing some work for you. Good guys. The owner and his son are also restoring a 70 Challenger. Gentry and son, Capers who is about 13, have some work ahead of them but have the experience to do it. Judging from the website they do great looking work. And yes we will want to see more pics. Don't want to threadjack but does anyone else have a problem with a loud rumble coming from the trunk area. Just above idle I get this obnoxious noise from something back there. (No, not the exhaust note that sound is sweet)

The muffler mounting gromments were worn allowing the bolt fastening them to the undercarriage to move around a bit. Thanks a bunch. :thumbsup:

I have just completed installing the two piece trunk on my 70 vert. My quarters and tail panel was removed. The only reason I went with the two piece was because I had one lying around and the part of the old floor under the tail panel was not rusted. I however have another car I will do the trunk floor next. It is badly rusted under the tail panel. The one piece floor has the rear edge that I will so badly need. If your rear edge is bad I would use the one piece and cut it. I did one last fall that turned out perfect. You need to joggle the seams and tuck the rear edge under your tail panel. It will fit if you trim it down enough.
